Chapter 11 011 Mary's Dancing Partner
Mary did not like Badernette, and therefore, although she danced with him, had little interest in finding a subject.
Fortunately, Bader Knight spoke quickly, "Miss Bennet," he said with a smile, "you have been chatting with my brother while dancing, why did you ignore me?"
Mary didn't like such jokes, so she just explained, "Brother Ling gave me some advice about work."
"Oh, he does have more experience than I do," Badernett replied. "I admire him for that. He finally turned his hobby into a good job."
Mary did not answer, but Badernett asked again, "Miss Bennet, what are your hobbies?"
Even if Mary was interested, she wouldn't tell him, so she just smiled perfunctorily, "I really don't have any interest, Mr. Knight."
Unexpectedly, Bader Knight actually replied seriously, "Me neither."
"It's a pity," he went on, "but, Miss Bennet, isn't playing the piano a hobby? I think you play it very well. You must have spent a lot of time on the piano. Bar?"
No one remains indifferent to such obvious compliments, and Mary is no exception. She first thanked her politely, and then said with a smile, "Playing the piano is just a basic skill for young women in the Muggle world, and all my sisters can play it."
"Your sisters," continued Badernett, "how many sisters do you have?"
"Four," Mary smiled, "only I am the witch."
"Oh, Miss Bennet," exclaimed Badernett, "then you are the luckiest one."
"I think so too," Mary replied casually. She didn't want to let the topic stay in her home for too long. After that, the two of them didn't talk for a while, and the dance ended quickly.
Bader Knight didn't leave immediately, but instead came up to her and asked, "Miss Bennet, do you need to take a break?"
"Phibbs took a few seats in the corner by the window," he added, "I think you'll like it there."
Mary, too, seemed to have nowhere to go if she refused him, so she said yes.Badernett, indeed, graciously escorted her to the seat of his brother, who was sipping some black liquor from a goblet.
"Any tea?" cried Badernett. "I'm very thirsty."
Phoebe Snight pointed to the small round table next to it. There were teapots and cups on the table, but the house-elf did not appear.Mary felt a little thirsty, too, and, above all, it seemed inappropriate for Mr. Knight to pour himself tea in the lady's presence.
So she went over and poured two cups of tea, and offered one of them to Badernett, who immediately looked flattered.
"Oh, Miss Bennet, you are very kind," said he, "and I am very flattered."
Phoebe Snet put down his wine glass, got up and opened the seat for Mary, asked her to sit down, and then turned to his brother, "Badr, at least half of the young ladies want to dance with you tonight, so you'd better hurry up and drink Go away."
"Oh, I don't know half a dozen," muttered Badernett, "I'm going to hang out later, and I don't intend to dance all the dances."
"Whatever you want," Phoebe Snett raised his glass again, "but what I want to remind you is that I saw Vincent seem to bring a few people towards us, including a young lady."
Badrnight turned to see it. "Can I Apparate Now?" Mary seemed to hear him mutter, but when she looked at him again, he had already stood up and greeted him.
Phoebe Snett's voice came from Mary's ear, "Look, Miss Bennet," he said, "Every time I get to this point, I feel that the original decision was absolutely correct."
"I thought your brother liked balls," laughed Mary.
"We're pretty similar in character," Phoebe Snight added, "but I think I have a little more courage than him, so I always thought I'd be sorted into Gryffindor."
Mary knew that Phibs Knight was from Hufflepuff, but wasn't he a transfer student?
"Oh, I thought you hadn't been sorted," she was a little surprised.
"Every Hogwarts student must be sorted," he smiled, "but my sorting ceremony was held in the headmaster's office."
It must be some kind of privilege, Mary said no more. After a short silence, Fibbsnett asked again, "Miss Bennet, do you like this kind of dance?"
Mary immediately responded in the affirmative.
"Well, it seems we're all very limited at observing people," said Phoebe Snight. "I thought you didn't like dances."
Poor Mary, she was so focused on the problem that she missed an important message hidden in it.Almost immediately she thought why he had made such a judgment, and she must have to explain it again.
"I just like the joyous atmosphere of the dance party," she laughed. "It would be even better if there were a few more dances."
"Oh, great," Phoebe Snight drank the wine in his glass, "Miss Bennet, come dance with me for the next dance."
Mary did not refuse, but it seemed to her that two dances with Phoebe Snight in one evening were enough. So, she happened to turn to the opposite of Victor Hastings during the dance, and pretended to ask him if he had met any other classmates.
Victor's answer satisfied Mary, "I'm looking for you," he said, "I met Robert Maxwell, who graduated two years earlier, and you know him too?"
Next, Mary and they each danced a dance.Robert Maxwell is a rather rigid guy. After he graduated, he worked as a clerk at the Duke of Hampton's house.
"Oh, speaking of work, Mary, I would suggest that you consider working as a governess in the house of a great nobleman," Robert Maxwell said solemnly, "if you are lucky enough to meet a very talented Girlfriend, maybe you can get a good future."
"And," he emphasized seriously, "you can still meet a lot of big people."
Then this can be regarded as a very heart-to-heart suggestion. Of course Mary understood what he meant, so she thanked him sincerely.
"You're welcome," he curled his lips. "If you weren't a Gryffindor student, I certainly wouldn't advise you that way."
However, when Mary was chatting alone with Victor, he immediately asked her, "Mary, you won't listen to Maxwell's advice and become some kind of governess?"
"It's not the first time I've heard of a governess job," answered Mary frankly. "I've always considered it a last resort."
Victor said again in a rather heavy tone, "If you have to be a governess, it's best to find a family like the Windermere family, and don't think about any big shots."
Mary could only nod. In fact, it occurred to her that it seemed a better choice to return to Longbourn and marry than to remain in the wizarding world as a governess.
Perhaps it is still necessary to thank Victor, however, by the time Mary thought of this, he had already changed the subject quickly.
"I should ask Sophie to another dance," Victor Hastings said not so much to Mary, but to encourage himself.
"Hurry up," said Mary hastily, "everyone will be tired by now."
Victor went immediately, however, Mary did not see him and Sophie on the dance floor, and she looked carefully, and he did not seem to be in the hall either.
It was not long before Sophie came to see her again, and this time the two gentlemen whom she had introduced to Mary had perhaps been treated with special care, for they each invited Mary to a dance.
One of them, Mr. So-and-so, politely asked about Mary's family background. After hearing that she came from a Muggle family, he didn't have any special reaction.
He just asked Mary if she was going to look for a job, and said with a smile that if she could come to London to work, I hope we can meet again.
"I can introduce you to some of my friends," he added.
Even if it was an invitation, Mary only noticed that the premise of the invitation was that she could find a job in London, and she had no confidence in it, so she could only be perfunctory.
The gentleman walked away quickly, and Mary looked around to see that Phoebe Snight was still in the place he had been. Some guests have already said goodbye and left. For her, this evening is colorful enough, but it seems that it is not so easy to kill the rest of the time.
Sophie rushed over again suddenly, "Mary, help me find where Victor is?"
Mary could only search carefully again, and Victor had indeed disappeared, so she had to half-jokingly say to Sophie, "You probably broke his heart by refusing to dance with him."
"I didn't!" Sophie argued at once. "I just told him to wait for me."
Then maybe Victor was really waiting somewhere, and Mary was about to go out to find it, when Sophie whispered again, "Mary, go and ask Vincent, maybe Victor bid him farewell?"
"I'll look for Victor outside first," Mary could only answer in this way.
This time, she quickly found him. Victor Hastings was leaning against the corner of the terrace, blowing the cool breeze. When he heard that Sophie was looking for him, he was still as happy as he was at the beginning, walking and running I went back to the hall.
Mary still stayed on the terrace, the other side of the hall was still brightly lit, the music played again, and the wind blew, and she suddenly felt a little tired.
Sophie once said that the dance should be postponed until the early hours of the morning. Mary thought of this and decided to go back to her room to sleep.
Fortunately, Bader Knight spoke quickly, "Miss Bennet," he said with a smile, "you have been chatting with my brother while dancing, why did you ignore me?"
