Deciding to change the subject, Li Xueyue asked, "Where did Yu Zhen go?"

"Oh, that's a good question. I've lost track of him." Li Chenyang looked around in confusion. "Maybe he went home by himself?"

Li Xueyue looked around and found that most of the guests had left. Only a few people said the last words to Ning Hou who was standing at the door and Ning Huabing who was saying goodbye. The big garden was empty, and there was no sign of Yu Zhen.

Li Xueyue wasn't sure if she wanted him to see her like this. "He came with us, do you think he'll have a carriage to take him to where he lives?" She hadn't meant to show she was so worried about him, but that was it.

Li Chenyang smiled and pinched her cheek.

"Try not to show that you're so worried about a guy. They'll like you more if you do," he teased her as he placed a hand on her upper back and guided her towards the front door.

"I don't care about him." Li Xueyue muttered, playing with the ribbon on her belt, and then throwing it down. The scene of him shamelessly pulling her ribbon appeared in her mind again.

"I hope not." Li Chenyang lowered his head and smiled at her gently. "You performed very well today."

"Really?" Li Xueyue snorted, "Isn't that too dramatic?"

"Only a little bit, but it's your first time. Practice makes perfect," he told her.

"Minister Li, Princess Li Xueyue! Thank you for coming tonight." Lord Ningguahe said happily. He was smart enough to know which family should be given priority and to flatter others who might be postponed.

Li Chenyang just nodded. "Thank you very much for your invitation."

"What a warm celebration banquet. I've never seen one as lively and interesting as this one." Li Xueyue said, even though it was her first time attending such a celebration banquet.

Even though she was only sixteen when she was left for dead by the Bai family, the Bai family never let her attend Bai Tianai's birthday parties.

From her room, she could always smell the amazing aromas of food, hear festive music, and people's happy chit-chat. The noises always taunted her, reminding her that she had no right to even step foot into the party just a few feet away.

The Duchess had always preferred privacy, so for the past two years, Xueyue's birthday had been celebrated by the five of them together, with a huge feast filled with her favorite foods and desserts.

She never complains. Family is all that matters to her. She loves the intimacy of birthday celebrations because she gets to spend much-needed family time with people who truly love and care about her.

"I'm so glad you like it!" Ningguahe Hou exclaimed with a bright smile. "I hope you'll come to our manor often. My daughter will enjoy your company."

"That's right." Ning Huabing smiled and said in a gentle voice. Immediately, she attracted the attention of several men who were lingering around. But they immediately looked away, remembering the rumor they heard from one of her friends.

Li Chenyang looked at her curiously, then turned his attention back to Ningguahe Marquis. Where is the Marquis?

Ningguahe Hou seemed to see what Li Chenyang was thinking, and said, "I hope my wife can be here to celebrate with us. She is far away and can't come back in time."

Ning Huabing glanced at her hands and suddenly became depressed. She had missed her mother very much in the past two months. Marquis was visiting her sick mother in a distant urban area. Although so many friends came to the house, it was always lonely at home.

Li Chenyang nodded, not quite understanding. "I think Lord Ning must miss his daughter very much."

Ning Huabing's eyes widened. Was he trying to comfort her?

Ningguahe Hou nodded gratefully. He knew that his daughter was getting lonelier day by day. It was hard for her to be away from her mother, especially when she always told her mother all her secrets.

Li Xueyue grabbed Ning Huabing's hands and patted her soothingly. She said nothing, but sometimes, words are not needed.

Ning Huabing swallowed her saliva, raised her head, and met the real expression on Li Xueyue's face. She felt sorry for her. No one except her mother had ever sympathized with her. It was always pity or sympathy. Even Bai Tianai didn't say any words of comfort tonight, although she knew how much Ning Huabing loved her mother.

"Thank you." Ning Huabing said in a low voice, and Li Xueyue responded with a smile.

"It'll be okay. She'll be home soon."

Ning Huabing nodded and held Li Xueyue's hand tightly.

Finally, Li's carriage arrived. The Ning family said goodbye for the last time and wished them a safe return home.

Li Chenyang stood by the carriage door, ready to help Li Xueyue in. She looked back, as if waiting for someone. Then, with his support, she walked into the carriage.

After entering, the servant closed the door and the carriage drove towards Li's Mansion outside the city.

"Do you want to know what I realized?" Li Xueyue asked Li Chenyang, who was busy looking out the window to make sure they were not being followed.

"What did you realize?" Li Chenyang sounded curious and amused about her question.

Li Xueyue leaned her head against the wall of the carriage. "You don't seem to be bothered by Yu Zhen's presence in my life."

Li Chenyang hesitated whether to answer. He had to think about his answer slowly so as not to reveal too much information. “I never thought I would protect a sister.”

"I didn't expect you to be that kind of person."

"Wen Jinkai has a history..." Li Chenyang paused, almost saying something he shouldn't say. "He has a bad history with someone I knew before. He wasn't good enough for her."

"What do you mean?"

Li Chenyang swallowed. He hoped that her painful face would not flash through his mind.

“He’s a great guy, but a terrible suitor,” he said.

Li Xueyue nodded. "Brother Wen also said something similar."

"Really?" Li Chenyang's voice suddenly became unusual, almost as if he was frightened. "What did he say?"

“Not much.” Li Xueyue shrugged. “He respected Wen Jinkai as a soldier and a man, but not so much as a lover.”

"Yes." Li Chenyang shook his head slowly. "Wen Jinkai would be a bad lover."

"why?"

Li Chenyang clenched his hands. He was not angry with Xueyue, but angry with himself for not being able to protect his two younger sisters.

"Don't worry," he said simply.

Li Xueyue felt that there was more to this topic than what he said. Seeing his reaction, she decided to give up. Besides, she didn't want to think about Wen Jinkai anymore. The less she thought about him, the better. She didn't need a man like him in her life, no matter how handsome and mysterious he was.

"Are you sure you don't want to tell me what happened?" Li Chenyang asked, watching her expression change in the shadows. From anger to reluctance, and then to disappointment.

Li Xueyue gazed out the window and marveled at the full moon - a good omen for a birthday.

She weighed the options before her and sighed softly. She fiddled with her little fingers and could only bite her lower lip. She didn't want to create any more unnecessary conflicts.

"Let me think about it, okay?"

Li Chenyang became even more worried. Was it too bad that she had to be prepared to tell him what happened? Suddenly, his face turned as pale as the moon.

"Did anyone touch you? Like, did they do anything to hurt you?" He lowered his voice, even though they were the only two people in the car and no one else could hear.

"Did someone forcefully approach you?!" Li Chenyang asked sharply, his eyes wide open. Did he arrive too late again? Did history repeat itself? !

"Xueyue, you have to tell me, I want to kill that man with my bare hands, and then-"

"No! Nothing like this has ever happened."

Li Chenyang cursed under his breath. "I shouldn't have let you go alone. The security was tight on your birthday, and there were two commanders with you, so I didn't think it was necessary to bring guards."

"It's okay, nothing like that happened." Li Xueyue frowned. "Let's drop this topic for now, okay?"

Li Chenyang sighed heavily. "Okay, but you'd better not protect him."

Li Xueyue nodded. She was not protecting Wen Jinkai, she was protecting Li Chenyang. She didn't want to hurt him, nor did she want to hurt his friendship with Wen Jinkai.
