Li Xueyue looks for Li Chenyang so that they can go home.

Her first plot against Bai Tianai had been solved. She gave Ning Huabing a gift and wished her a happy birthday. She had been here for a while and felt that if there was no benefit other than company, there was no need for her to stay here any longer. Besides, it was late, and several people had the same idea.

As she walked through the crowd, someone suddenly grabbed her elbow. She turned around and found that the person hugging her tightly was Wen Jinkai, who looked unhappy. Without waiting for her to say anything, he pulled her to a secluded place near the rose bushes.

Li Xueyue folded her arms and leaned against a big tree near the bushes. She would rather hide her identity. There was no one else around them.

"What does the Commander want from me?"

There was a storm brewing in Wen Jinkai's eyes, dangerous enough to drown her. His breath was heavy, as if he was going to suffocate her alive. The atmosphere was awkward. He didn't know what to do with her.

Her attention was instantly drawn to the way his jaw set as he clenched his teeth and the wrinkles between his brows.

"Why are you like this?" Commander Wen Jinkai roared. What annoyed him was that she crossed her arms over her chest, almost in a protective manner. Did she think he would hurt her?

"What do you get from hanging out with other men?"

"What?" Li Xueyue hissed in disbelief.

"You publicly declared your promise to me, and now you're involved with Yu Zhen."

"What does this have to do with you?" Li Xueyue frowned. "You made it clear that you don't want anything to do with me--"

"I've made it clear that I want everything to do with you!" he roared, rushing towards her.

She didn't take a timid step back to create distance. Instead, she looked up and looked deep into his eyes. A storm against a hurricane.

"No, you didn't." Li Xueyue said calmly. She preferred to argue in the most passive tone. Not because she wanted to irritate him, but because loud voices did not prompt him to prick up his ears.

"You gave me a vague answer and expected me to read your mind," she continued, resisting the urge to roll her eyes.

"I gave you a vague answer because I wasn't sure how I felt. Why were you so impatiently waiting for an answer? Is it wrong to be friends and wait it out-"

“Friends?” Li Xueyue repeated, pointing to where he had forced them to be close. “Will friends be jealous of another man? Will friends talk about marriage? Will friends curse like this?”

Wen Jinkai pursed his lips. "Are you so eager to put someone like me in a cage?"

"Excuse me?!"

"You know what people will think of you? A loose woman."

Li Xueyue almost slapped him. She raised her hand, her eyes wide with frustration. He didn't even flinch. He just glared at her, provoking her to hit him.

Her heartbeat quickened, her blood boiled, her breathing quickened. She was enraged by his insults and bold accusations. Who the hell did he think he was?!

She roughly grabbed him by the collar and pulled his head down so that they were at the same height.

"Don't you ever call me that when you're thinking with your cock instead of your brain," she said angrily.

Li Xueyue pushed him away, but he grabbed her shoulders and pressed her against the bark.

Li Xueyue bit her tongue to prevent herself from crying out in pain. He hurt her; he hurt her; it was written all over her face, but he ignored her emotions.

"I'm saying this for your own good," he growled.

"Like dragging me to a secluded place is also for my own good?"

He hit the tree so hard, so close to her head, that she tensed. The tree shook from the force, and leaves fell. Her eyes widened, and for the first time since they met, she was afraid of him.

"Apologize."

"What?" she asked incredulously.

"Apologize and take back what you said." Wen Jinkai looked calm and spoke in a cold voice, but his eyes could not hide his anger.

Li Xueyue felt her heart sink to the bottom. She looked away from him, but he grabbed her chin and forced her to stare at him. Goosebumps crawled up her arms and she trembled under his cold eyes.

“I’m sorry!” Li Xueyue huffed. From then on, she lost all hope in him. He hurt her, but she was the one who apologized.

Finally, Wen Jinkai let her go and she immediately took the opportunity to run away. He was surprised when she passed by him. He immediately reached out to grab her wrist, but only grabbed her sleeve.

"You shouldn't be running in those clothes—" He paused when he saw the look on her face. Her eyes were trembling and she looked like she'd seen a ghost.

"You're afraid of me," Wen Jinkai pointed out, slowly loosening his sleeves.

She didn't answer, her face was full of disgust, hatred and fear.

Wen Jinkai’s expression softened instantly, and she was frightened at the thought of how terrible she always felt around him. He didn’t want to hurt her. “Xiaolu, I’m just angry with myself, I didn’t mean to scare you.”

His face was filled with regret, and his eyes became as gentle as the waves. "Come here, fawn." His voice was full of sweet promise and adoration. "You're shaking, let me-"

"I would be very grateful if you could stay away from me." Li Xueyue said to him.

"Snow Moon——"

"Good night, Commander." Li Xueyue said briskly, and then fled back to the already ended banquet. People left one by one and filed into the carriage.

Li Xueyue sensed the despair in his sharp eyes and looked away. She told herself that she shouldn't look back at him, but she did. He leaned against the tree, covering his face in disbelief.

"Xueyue?" Li Chenyang said, very happy and glad that he found her.

Where on earth had she wandered off to? He had been looking for her for some time. When she turned to face him, he was relieved, but it was quickly replaced by suspicion.

"What happened?" he asked, walking closer to her. She looked terrified. He could tell it from the way her eyes nervously moved from him to the ground.

"Did anyone do anything to you? Did anyone hurt you?" He lowered his head to her level and asked worriedly. She didn't answer.

"Who is he?" he whispered and she shook her head, still in shock at what had just happened to her.

"A name. All you have to do is give me a name and he won't bother you again. I promise."

For the second time tonight, she felt pure fear. No one in this world could stand against Wen Jinkai. Whatever he wanted, he would get. There would be no consequences.

She realized that no one could protect her from him. She realized that no amount of guards could protect her from him. He had more power and influence than she had ever expected. He would not hesitate to use it against her.

She would never feel safe. Never again.

Li Chenyang saw the fear on her face. "Xueyue..." His voice became smaller and smaller, and he didn't know what to say to her.

"I want to go home," she pleaded.

He lowered his head and whispered, "Is it Wen Jinkai?"

"I don't want to talk about it anymore-"

"I will destroy him." Li Chenyang roared and tried to stand up, but was grabbed by her.

"Brother Chen, I just want to go home."

"Did he do anything to you?" He grabbed her and asked seriously.

Li Chenyang had to know that this matter was really over. He was ready to sever all ties with Wen Jinkai, but he needed her confirmation first. Their friendship had already been strained by an incident that happened before Xueyue came to the Li Mansion, but this incident ruined their friendship forever.

"He hurt me, and then I apologized for it." The confession was on the tip of her tongue.

"I don't want to cause any trouble, Brother Chen."

"You won't be in trouble."

“I will.” Li Xueyue looked around and whispered, “I wonder why the emperor is so interested in poking at me.”

"why?"

"Because he doesn't like Wen Jinkai getting close to me."

"It seems that I finally have something in common with my uncle." Li Chenyang sneered. "Xueyue, don't worry." He leaned close to her ear and whispered carefully, "Father has warned him."

Li Xueyue blinked. "How is this possible?"

"Trust me." Li Chenyang patted her cheek and said gently. "Are you sure you want to continue protecting him like this?"

Li Xueyue stared at the ground, counting every little pebble on the road, finding it amusing. She didn't want to be the reason a friendship ended. It felt like...she was a friendship destroyer? What's more, this was also a problem she had to solve. She had been alone for most of her life, which made it difficult for her to rely on others for help.

"Yes, I'm sure."
