Li Xueyue moved, groaning in pain. From her arms to her legs, her whole body ached. If only she had done some stretching exercises before and after the game. Championships? Her eyes widened and she sat up suddenly, her heart pounding.

'Where am I? ' she panicked.

Her eyes wandered over the large room, which was tastefully decorated in the most depressing of colors.

She blinked at the black, white, silver, and gray decorations. From the dragons hovering over the pillars to the polished ash tables, she didn't recognize this place. It frightened her.

The last thing she remembered was the light blue sky, the clouds floating above her. Memories of the tournament came flooding back. She vaguely remembered passing out, and that was it. What happened after that?

She carefully lowered her head, and her shoulders relaxed when she saw that her clothes had not changed. The tightness of her belt was the same, indicating that her clothes had not been forcibly changed. Her ears twitched when she heard footsteps getting closer.

Worried about the outcome of the game and unsure of her current situation, she immediately lay down and pretended to be asleep. Her heart pounded violently when she felt a dark presence enter the room. Her stomach churned uncomfortably as footsteps approached - the sound was strong and confident.

Xueyue was waiting for the right moment to attack whoever was approaching and then run away. She hoped that her body would not involuntarily fidget before the sneak attack. When a familiar smell hit her face, her heart skipped a beat. Who is he?

She nearly screamed bloody murder when a ghostly touch came to rest on her cheek, and she was glad she had reached under the blanket, or the man would have seen her twitching fingers.

"I know you're awake."

Her eyes snapped open, filled with horror and disbelief. Looking down at her with a gruff expression was Wen Jinkai. When their eyes met, his expression softened.

"Do you know that you snore when you sleep?" he thought as he sat on the edge of the bed. She looked at him warily, her eyes full of reproach.

Xue Yue had a million things to say. Most were questions, but a few were curse words. Her whole body tensed as he pressed his thumb to the skin between her brows. He gently smoothed out the wrinkles she hadn't known had formed.

"Relax," he told her softly. "You're safe with me."

Li Xueyue grabbed his hand roughly and roared, "Take me back to my home, you have no right to bring me here."

She expected his mood to be dampened by her rude words and harsh behavior. It wasn't. He looked at their touching hands and smiled. "This is the first time you've touched me."

She pulled her hand away immediately, as if the touch burned her. In fact, a stinging sensation shot down her spine. She forced herself not to shudder. She didn't like it. She didn't like her reaction to him. He didn't love her. He didn't care about her. He just wanted to display her as a trophy of a proud conquest. She reminded herself of this thought over and over again until it completely took over her mind.

Wen Jinkai watched as walls rose up around her heart. The uncertainty in her eyes disappeared and she became alert. "If you build walls around yourself, you block out light and hope."

"Hope won't keep me alive."

"Who told lies and broke you?" he asked softly. "Who left you scarred?"

"It's none of your business." Li Xueyue sat up on the bed, and when he tried to brush away her scattered hair, he slapped his hand away.

"Tell me, little deer, what can I do to restore your confidence? What can I do or say to make you smile?" he asked slowly.

Li Xueyue thought he was joking until she saw sincerity on his frozen face. She wished she wouldn't look at him. Did he know how dangerous his drive was? He could easily get any woman he wanted - a woman who wouldn't fight as hard as she did. A man who could control his temper, which changed at an alarming rate.

She felt her breath quicken. The commander reminded her of Zheng Leiyu, and that frightened her.

"What?" Wen Jinkai asked in disbelief. Was she serious?

"Why are you like this? Why do you keep coming and going? Why did you bring me here?" Li Xueyue questioned, with a warning light in her eyes. She wanted to go home. She didn't want to be here. The more he stared at her like this, the more she wanted to escape.

"Don't do that, don't look at me like that!"

Wen Jinkai blinked in surprise. \"Like what?\"

"Like you actually care about me. It scares me, and—"

"Why are you scared?" he asked carefully, his eyes narrowing as he saw her face pale. Just when he thought he had taken a brick off her wall of defense, she built another one to protect her heart.

"Have I ever hurt you?" he asked suddenly.

She was forced to shake her head. "That doesn't excuse your behavior."

"No, there isn't."

Li Xueyue blinked in surprise. She was puzzled by his willingness to admit his mistakes. She wondered if he did this often.

Wen Jinkai searched her face for any sign of agreement. He said slowly, "To be honest, you confuse me. Why is that?"

"Because you have psychological problems?"

When he laughed, he surprised himself. It was like he was laughing from the heart.

Li Xueyue wished she hadn't heard his laugh. His laugh sounded reassuring and warm. It was very deep, yet rich and smooth. Her heart trembled. When he laughed, he was the most carefree man she had ever seen.

She froze as he tapped her forehead gently, "No, silly girl. It's not like that." A reassuring smile played on his lips, his eyes crinkled. He was breathtakingly handsome, and no one could replicate that.

It was a moment so precious that she wanted to pocket it and treasure it for the rest of her life, because she knew she would never witness it again. He was someone she was supposed to stay away from. Yet, she always found herself looking for him.

Why was she so naive? Why was she so obsessed with him? He would never make her happy. Her marriage with him would be lonely and loveless. He would never be able to cherish her properly. Why was she so naive?

Li Xueyue really wanted to scold herself for being stupid. She was so stupid to dream of having a future with him. He couldn’t even respect her basic boundaries, but here she was, loving a man who could never love her back. A man who didn’t know how to love.

She couldn't trust him. She could never put her fragile heart in his hands and expect him to cherish it. He didn't know how to do it. Her untrusting heart would slip through his fingers and he would let it break into a thousand pieces.

Nothing breaks her heart more than realizing she is broken beyond repair. No matter which man walks into her life and confesses his love for her, she won't believe him.
