Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 242 Spare Them
"It's raining heavily outside." Li Xueyue turned to face the window and said as she looked out at the downpour. The water poured down endlessly, and the thunder roared across the sky. Although it was chaotic, nothing could compare to the storm inside the palace.
"What a relief," she mused as a flash of lightning streaked across the sky. The storm was finally making its presence known. Rain dripped from the roof and collected on a leaf.
Li Xueyue huddled in the window seat, her book abandoned and forgotten. She vaguely remembered it was something about herbology.
"It rarely rains in the capital. This is the first time I've seen such bad weather." Li Xueyue tilted her head and looked in the direction of her brother.
"If only you paid more attention to the book instead of those things outside the window that are not good for you." Li Chenyang said. He didn't need to look up to know that the book was next to her.
"It's so hard to study here." Li Xueyue sighed, swinging her feet. This afternoon's archery practice made her very tired. Her fingers were getting more and more sore, and it was even difficult for her to turn a page.
Moreover, being surrounded by so many books at once, Li Xueyue felt a little claustrophobic. Even with oolong tea and rice cakes, the library was a dull place. She was enjoying the weather outdoors when suddenly dark clouds blocked out the sun. Heavy rain ruined her afternoon fun.
"The library is the best place to read. Knowledge is all around us." Li Chenyang said attentively while turning the pages of a book.
Li Xueyue jumped down from her window seat, picked up her book, and decided to put it back where it was. She pulled a chair away from the table where Li Chenyang was sitting. He didn't look up from his book once, but that wasn't surprising. If Li Chenyang could marry a book, he would.
Li Xueyue reached for a rice cake with black sesame paste. She chewed it happily. Nuts and sweetness burst out in her mouth instantly. Mixed with the chewy and soft taste of the rice cake, she felt like she was in heaven. A sip of bitter oolong tea instantly washed away the bitterness and allowed her to try another flavor.
"Go buy another book. Don't just sit there and eat." Li Chenyang chuckled. He could almost feel the joy emanating from her. Did food make her so happy?
"Tell me, who came today? When I came back from the training ground, I seemed to see someone leaving." Li Xueyue said, remembering a figure near the main entrance. She was not close enough to catch a glimpse of who the man was.
Li Chenyang's body froze. His hand was stuck on the page he was about to turn. Finally, he closed the book and looked up.
"It's getting hotter outside," Li Chenyang said suddenly. "Slowly, the weather will get worse until it becomes unbearable to stand in the sun for too long."
Li Xueyue didn't know where to go with this topic. "Yes, I try to wear a hat when I practice archery."
“Yeah.” Li Chenyang nodded in agreement. “The emperor was supposed to go to the holiday home today, but was blocked by the weather.”
Li Xueyue blinked her eyes and finally understood what it meant. Could it be that... should I commit treason today?
Li Chenyang saw her curious look and shook his head firmly. "The less you know, the less suspicious you will be."
Li Xueyue pursed her lips and felt that he was right. She shouldn't let herself get involved in things that had nothing to do with her. But curiosity killed the cat. "So what about the emperor's children? Won't they enjoy the same privileges in the holiday palace?"
Li Chenyang smiled at her ambiguous wording. She soon understood. “The crown prince will ride in the same carriage as his father. The emperor’s other children will not have the same luxury.”
"What about the queen? The sun is definitely not good for her." Li Xueyue turned her head and looked in the direction of the door which was far away from where they were sitting.
"Well, the emperor brought his concubines here, which is enough to know where the queen lives." Li Chenyang said. He stood up and put the book away.
Li Xueyue hummed in response. If there was one thing she didn't want to be, it was the queen. It would be heartbreaking to watch your husband marry another woman and have a child with her. Her lips pulled downward. Just the thought of it broke her heart.
Yu Zhen was in another woman's arms, holding another woman's child. He would smile down at her, just as he smiled at Xue Yue.
Li Xueyue couldn't help but tremble all over when she thought of this.
"Yu Zhen rushed home after hearing about a political incident in Han." Li Xueyue said, holding her chin with her hand. "Have you heard about this?"
Li Chenyang flipped through the books on the bookshelf, looking for a book that would make his sister happy. "No, not yet. Normally, we hear news very quickly. Han Jian loves gossip."
Finally, Li Chenyang discovered something. A silly love story between a lowly servant and a prince. He scoffed at the dubious idea. As if such a thing could possibly become a reality.
"Even if what you read is useless, I still prefer you to read it. It will improve your reading speed and ability to grasp concepts." Li Chenyang put the book in front of her and she picked it up.
"What will happen to the Queen, other concubines, and the royal children? Will they all suffer in the scorching heat of the capital?" Li Xueyue asked as she looked at the first page of the book.
Li Chenyang glanced at her. She was nosy. When she stepped back, he pinched her nose and smiled. “I’m sure they will go through something similar to what happened to the emperor. This will all happen before the palace is empty.”
Li Xueyue nodded slowly. She wondered how long this plan had been going on. Considering that Duke Li Chenyang needed to convince everyone in the court, it would definitely take a while.
"But you don't have to worry about their situation. I believe that the sunshine in the capital will not show mercy to them." Li Chenyang said. He patted her head, signaling her not to focus on the food, but on the book.
"It's an interesting story, although I've never read it before. But I heard it's very popular among civilians," he said.
Li Xueyue glanced down and read the title aloud. "A pebble in the gem palace."
Li Chenyang nodded. "The pebbles refer to——"
"Don't tell me anything, I want to know myself." Li Xueyue said as she started reading the first page.
Li Chenyang shrugged. "As you wish."
Finally, the library was silent. Time passed by, and the rain got heavier. The only sound came from the turning of pages and the occasional thunder. This was Li Xueyue's lullaby, and Li Xueyue eventually fell asleep with the book in her arms.
