Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 240 We Can Never Move Forward
"Jin Kai, what happened?" Queen Huiyun asked hesitantly, looking at her son nervously.
Queen Huiyun had never seen him stare at her like this. It was as if she had slaughtered his family. The obvious hatred in his eyes made her shudder, but what frightened her most was his calmness. His shoulders were tense and his eyes were threatening, but his face was cold and dark.
"What did you do to her, Mom?" Wen Jinkai asked in a low voice.
Queen Huiyun was confused by his low tone. He was holding something in his hand, but she couldn't see what it was.
"Young master, what did you say? I spent a whole day in the room to make this handkerchief for you." Queen Huiyun showed the silk in her hand and explained patiently.
"Isn't it cute-!" She gasped as he reached out and angrily grabbed her neck. "Kinkai, are you crazy?!" She screamed as he threw her to the floor.
Queen Huiyun struggled to resist her son's grasp.
"What did you do to Li Minghua?!" Wen Jinkai roared, and his voice bounced off the wall.
Hearing the commotion, the door began to creak. The guards outside shouted frantically, asking about the pale queen's condition.
"What are you talking about—" Before she could finish her words, Wen Jinkai pinched her tender neck and watched her eyes widen in horror. The blood on her face had drained away and breathing was painful, but she could still breathe air. Enough to keep her alive, but not enough to make her feel comfortable.
"What did you say? What did you do?!" Wen Jinkai screamed and grabbed her neck. He pulled her close and whispered, "You killed her?!"
Queen Huiyun felt as if the rug had been pulled out from under her feet. It was as if cold water had drenched her from head to toe. How much did her son know?!
Fear enveloped her, and memories flashed before her eyes. That dangerous night was full of flames and provocations. She would never forget the day when her hands were first stained with blood. Despite her own ruined life, Empress Huiyun was not satisfied, because it was not the blood of Duchess Wang Qixing, but her daughter Li Minghua.
"No, no, I didn't...!" Queen Huiyun choked and held the hand that could end her life. Her eyes were filled with tears. He stared at her as if she was a stranger, the meanest creature on earth. It was painful for her to see him like this. She suddenly remembered him as a child - cold and repressed.
"Lies!" Wen Jinkai roared and threw her to the ground. He became irritated when he saw her face. He had read every entry in the diary.
Li Minghua did not love Wang Longhe. She was disgusted by Wang Longhe's confession. This was completely different from the story made up by Queen Huiyun. Nothing about Li Minghua was as the queen portrayed.
Wen Jinkai walked over to his mother, who had fallen to the ground. She was a mess, her eyes painted with kohl left ugly streaks on her cheeks. A hairpin had slipped from her hair, and several strands were hanging down, barely holding it in place. She quickly adjusted her appearance.
Wen Jinkai squatted in front of her, narrowing his eyes, and a look of horror flashed across her face. "What on earth did you do?"
"I didn't do anything to her!" Queen Huiyun wailed and reached out to pinch her son's cheek.
Queen Hye-un hoped her gentle touch would get rid of his temper. She had raised a ferocious beast, and now he was violently attacking her. She had expected this. This was the result of not collaring him.
“My dear son, you must believe me. I didn’t do anything to her to hurt you!” Queen Huiyun screamed and desperately grabbed his hand. When he didn’t try to push her away, she was filled with hope.
Wen Jinkai is still her son. He won't hurt her more than this, right?
"She has brought you great happiness, how could I hurt her?" Queen Huiyun whispered in the soft, caressing voice that was so familiar to her. A voice full of love and loyalty, none other than him, the son she had finally come to love. Not because of his usefulness, but because she had raised him. She had watched him grow from the boy who clung to her legs to the man who led the country.
"My dear son, I only care about your happiness—" Her voice died away as she felt the sting of the hairpin. Blood flowed from her fingers, ruby red, like the gems scattered on the floor.
Just like that, Queen Huiyun felt that she had already lost. Her son tightly grasped Li Minghua's embroidered ball hairpin in his hand. It was a hairpin that would not be damaged by fire. Queen Huiyun took it as a trophy to commemorate her small victory.
“This, this—”
"Oh, so you know what this is." Wen Jinkai sneered. He showed a weird smile and thought: "Mom, do you know where you got it from?"
"Come on, son," she whispered, "you are not thinking rationally. Have you been drinking? Come to me, my son, and I will make you a cup of hot tea and take you to bed."
Queen Hye-un gently stroked his face, her eyes widening and tears falling. She stroked his cheek with her thumb, confident that her coaxing had worked. When he was a child, he had been frightened by the demon under his bed. She was the one who reassured him that everything was okay. What happened to the little boy who clung to her and trembled all over? What happened to the brat?
Queen Huiyun’s heart broke when she heard how he was treated. He had never raised his hand to her like this. Never roared at her. Never hurt her. This was not how a little bear should react to a mother bear.
"You must calm down, my dear son—"
“Did you…kill her?” Wen Jinkai gritted his teeth, his eyes wide open, full of anger. He had a lot to say, but he only cared about these.
Who set the fire? Who pushed the person they loved away from them?
"I didn't kill her!" she cried, "Son, you did it. You destroyed her!"
"I didn't!" Wen Jinkai roared.
Queen Huiyun saw a vein protruding from his forehead. He was suppressing his anger, but all the suppressed emotions would soon burst. She was afraid that the glass had broken. Now, she would take her last breath at any moment. She was satisfied with that. It was better to die in his hands than to live with the idea that he hated her.
“You did it,” Queen Hye-un whispered. “You were the one who ignored her in the palace and left her to rot in her room alone. You turned your back on her when she needed you the most. You shunned her when she had no one but you for company.”
A shadow passed over Wen Jinkai's face. "I did these things only because your vicious words made me hate her."
Queen Huiyun snorted. "I'm just telling you what I think of her. I can't control your behavior or actions. I'm not you."
Wen Jinkai gnashed his teeth. He threw her back to the ground in anger. Lies. She was feeding him more lies. He would never hurt Li Minghua. He would never lay a hand on her. He loved her more than himself. She was the one who kept him sane.
Li Minghua is the person who loves him most in this world.
"I will never, ever hurt her," Wen Jinkai said gritting his teeth.
"No, you didn't hurt her," Queen Hye-un agreed. "But do you want to know what you did to her? You tore her heart and soul apart. That was worse than laying hands on her."
Queen Huiyun watched Wen Jinkai's expression turn from frustration to confusion, and then to utter horror at what he had done. She knew he was finally beginning to realize his actions. But how did he know this? Who told him? How did he find the hairpin?
There are still too many unanswered questions.
Queen Huiyun struggled to stand up with her arms shaking. She cursed the guards outside, telling them to go to hell and back. They couldn't go in, not because they didn't want to, but because they were obviously blocked by something. She had no doubt that Wen Jinkai had mobilized the shadow guards.
"Son, listen to me," Queen Huiyun said softly. She walked towards the commander calmly and slowly. She knew his temper.
"I didn't hurt her. You did," she whispered. "But it doesn't matter. What's past is past. If we keep looking back, we'll never be able to move forward."
Queen Huiyun saw a glimmer of humanity in his angular features. Her hope soared. Her son, he was still there. The little boy she loved was still inside him. All Wen Jinkai needed was a small push. The obedient beast would come back to her.
"Don't worry about her. As long as you believe in me, everything will be fine." Queen Huiyun said softly. "Mother knows best, my dear son. I only want the best for you."
Queen Hye-un caressed his face lovingly, cupping it in her palms. "I love you, my dear child. A mother can never pick a favorite, but you bring out that side of me," she whispered.
"Now, come and have a cup of hot tea with me. All this," she gestured to the overturned table and fallen accessories, "means nothing to me. I forgive you."
"Forgive...?" Wen Jinkai whispered with an incomprehensible look on his face.
"Yes, dear son, Mommy forgives you--!" He grabbed her neck again, this time with both hands. She screamed in pain, her feet dangling from the floor.
“Son…!” she squeezed out, and this time she was really suffocating.
"I will never forgive you." Wen Jinkai was furious, pulling her close. "Your death cannot earn my forgiveness, but I believe it can avenge Li Minghua."
Queen Huiyun's expression went from calm to fearful. For the first time in her life, she was afraid of death. She had never been so close to those dreaded doors of death. Who would have thought that he would be the one knocking on the door of death for her?
Who could have imagined that her own son would murder her?
