Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 216 Stop
Li Xueyue hoped that he would stop torturing her like this. One minute he was cold, and the next he was warm. How should she react to such a confession? There was only one answer in my mind.
"Then never let me go." She whispered. "Hold me if you think it's appropriate, for a lifetime, for a century, I don't mind."
Yu Zhen was stunned by her words. Did she really think so?
Yu Zhen hoped that he could believe her, but he couldn't. After who knows how many times, she played with his heart.
"Another selfish reaction," Yu Zhen said, letting her go.
Li Xueyue forced herself to smile when she wanted to cry. She had never been so emotional before, but when she thought of him, all her suppressed tears came out. She told herself that his words did not hurt her. Her heart was not stabbed by him. The pain in her chest was just an illusion.
His warmth was gone, and she was cold. Night had fallen, and she was wearing only her thin riding clothes. Still, she gritted her chattering teeth and looked away.
Little Orange didn't give her a second look. This prey was strange. He wondered if he could eat it or if he should just ignore it.
"Lead the princess back to the tent." Yu Zhen ordered the soldiers.
The soldier bowed his head. "Right away, Commander."
"What's inside?" Li Xueyue asked, pointing to the place where the strange cry was heard just now. She saw several soldiers preparing two lanterns to illuminate their vision.
"none of your business."
"Do you have animals there?" she continued. "I heard animal-like howling."
"Under the right circumstances," he mused. "Humans can make that kind of sound, too."
Li Xueyue felt like she was struck by lightning. She was confused, yet afraid of his words. What did he mean by that? She licked her lower lip, unable to take her eyes away from his evil smile. She used to admire his eyes, full of depth and brilliance. Now, it was wide, crazy, and thirsty for blood. But whose eyes were they? Was it hers?
"Who's in there?"
"You want to see it?"
The soldiers were frozen. The two looked at each other, not knowing whether to speak. This tragic scene was not something a princess like her should see.
Li Xueyue felt that if he rejected her, she would be so curious that she would die. She licked her lower lip nervously. "Do you want to hurt me?"
"Yes."
"what?!"
"A stupid question deserves a stupid answer," Yu Zhen snapped. He clenched his teeth and clenched his fingers into fists. Did she really think he would do that to her? She was such an idiot. Did he ever hurt her on purpose?
"I want to see what's in there."
Yu Zhen smiled bitterly. This will be an interesting test. "Then follow me."
Li Xueyue did not do as she said. She did not follow behind him, but boldly followed his footsteps. She walked side by side, forcing herself to keep up with his long strides.
The soldiers looked at each other again. No one knew her identity, but from her behavior, they knew she was not a simple woman. Perhaps, she was the commander's woman. They secretly glanced at her one last time. Seeing that the commander did not have any dissatisfaction on his face, the soldiers knew that she was not someone to be trifled with. In fact, their lieutenant was forced to train all day and all night.
Li Xueyue didn't know if she was really cruel enough to make humans scream like this. She turned around and examined his dark, prominent features. How could such a handsome man do something suspicious?
He had said he was cruel, but not to her. What a lie that was. Then again, she couldn't argue with him. She had driven him to such behavior.
With a sigh, Li Xueyue hugged her elbows and turned her attention elsewhere. It was cold and frost formed on her arms.
The soldiers stared expectantly at their commander. The right thing to do would be to lend her his thick cloak. It would keep her warm and comfortable.
Yu Zhen ignored her. He continued walking, ignoring her the entire time. When they reached the tent, her nose wrinkled. She pricked up her ears, trying to listen for suspicious sounds coming from the unremarkable tent.
"Commander." The guards saluted with their fists clasped.
Yu Zhen nodded in agreement. He entered the tent without a lantern. He didn't need it. His eyes were trained to cope with the darkness.
Li Xueyue pursed her lips. He didn’t even draw the curtains for her. She ignored his rudeness and picked up a lit lantern.
"Be careful, ma'am," a guard said nervously, knowing that the handle was still hot. "You'd better hold it with a handkerchief, otherwise you'll burn your fingers."
"Thank you," Li Xueyue responded, and put the lantern back. Her fingers holding the lantern were indeed a little warm, but not to the extent of being burned. She searched for a handkerchief in her pocket, but found nothing.
"A little burn never hurt anybody," she said at last, bending down to pick up the lantern again.
The guards looked at her anxiously. Aren't ladies more concerned about their skin? Especially women of high status like her? It is well known that women with blemishes or scars can never marry someone above their rank. Isn't she the commander's woman?
Li Xueyue snorted. The lantern was indeed too hot to hold without a handkerchief. She found that the design of this lantern was different from Wuyi's. The frame was made of metal instead of wood. It was more efficient and durable, but the metal absorbed too much of the candle's heat.
"Are you coming?" Yu Zhen said sternly in the tent.
Li Xueyue pursed her lips. "Thank you for your help," she snapped, stomping into the tent with the lantern in hand. She ignored the pain building in her fingertips.
As Li Xueyue walked into the tent, her face scrunched up in disgust. There was a foul smell in the air. She couldn't put her finger on it, but it was simply disgusting. She blinked quickly, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness. The lantern was too small to illuminate the entire tent, which was larger than expected.
Li Xueyue covered her mouth and nose and coughed. "What's that smell?"
Yu Zhen ignored her. He took a step forward and disappeared into the darkness.
Li Xueyue was a little surprised, how could this tent be so big. She thought she didn't see that its length was greater than its width, because he continued to walk. There were faint low whimpers and groans.
Something felt wrong. Li Xueyue was irritable and nervous. Despite this, she persisted. She ignored her intuition and the pull of her heart and continued to move forward.
Li Xueyue continued to walk forward a few steps, frowning at the pain in her fingertips as the lamp handle burned her. She put it down and blew on her hand, wishing she had brought a handkerchief. Finally, she became annoyed. She turned around, expecting to see a guard following them. That way, she could borrow their sword and cut some fabric from their clothes to wrap around the hilt.
"Of course no one else came in. The smell in here is too bad." Li Xueyue muttered. She shook her head and picked up the lantern again.
“If I get burned or blistered, I’ll make him pay,” she complained.
Li Xueyue heard a soft "puff" sound, most likely made by the beast that caused her embarrassment. She ignored his teasing and continued to walk forward. She raised the lantern and found something beside her. It was a table covered with various strange equipment.
She picked up one of the uniquely shaped objects and wondered what it was for. It had a handle like a pair of scissors, but the front end was like a sharp bird's beak. When she pressed the handle, the beak opened and closed. What was it for?
“It can rip your nails off.”
"Like metal products for carpentry?" Li Xueyue asked as it moved closer to the lantern. After a closer look, she found a small piece of something at the other end.
"No, just like human fingernails."
“What?” Li Xueyue asked, surprised by Yu Zhen’s answer. Where is he? She couldn’t see him anywhere around her.
"Yu Zhen, where are you?"
He did not respond.
Li Xueyue was getting more and more irritated. She didn't like the terrible smell and suspicious sound. The more she walked, the more her palms sweated.
Although Li Xueyue did not admit it, she was still afraid.
“Come to the light,” she said.
Again, he did not respond.
Li Xueyue swallowed. What happened? She didn't want to leave the lantern behind, even though the handle burned her. Li Xueyue forced herself to stay calm and keep going.
Finally, she reached the end of the tent. The whimpers, cries, and sobs were louder now. It was as if she were only a few feet away from it.
As Li Xueyue raised the small lantern, hoping to light up the front of her, something grabbed her elbow.
"No!" She cried loudly, waving her hands at the people behind her. A loud slap was heard.
Yu Zhen touched his cheek. Under normal circumstances, he would cut off this handover. But the person who touched him was Li Xueyue. He scared her too much.
"Be careful," he whispered again, placing a hand on her forearm.
"As soon as I step out of this tent, I'm going to beat the living crap out of you."
Yu Zhen uttered a dark laugh. In an instant, he stole the lantern from her hand and threw it far away. They were immersed in darkness.
Li Xueyue tried to walk in the direction of the lantern. She needed her source of light. The darkness was terrifying. It reminded her of a punishment from a Viscount Bai Sheng. When she misbehaved, he would lock her in her bedroom and deny her food or lighting. Sometimes, servants would be ordered to make weird noises until she was convinced that monsters were lurking around her.
Li Xueyue panicked. The candle had gone out. The tent was dark. She couldn't see anything, not even her hands. Her breathing became rapid and her heartbeat accelerated.
Yu Zhen smiled bitterly. The prey was trapped. She had nowhere to go. “Shh!”
Li Xueyue screamed and killed. Her adrenaline surged, and overwhelming fear overwhelmed her.
"Stop, stop, stop!" she howled, waving her arms in defense.
“I thought I said to be careful,” Yu Zhen muttered, grabbing her wrist to stop her from slapping him again. He admired her strength. Even now, his cheek still stung a little.
As he grabbed her wrist, Li Xueyue screamed in terror. Monsters. They were approaching her now. The monsters were real. They were no longer hiding under her bed. They were right in front of her.
In order to irritate her, Yu Zhen patted her head teasingly, pretending to be a ghost.
"Stop!" she screamed, and this time, it sounded too serious.
Yu Zhen was stunned. Maybe he had gone too far. His heart was filled with guilt. She was really trembling now, like a fragile autumn leaf on a dead branch. Her breathing was short and rapid.
"Sunshine--" He didn't finish his words. Her knees gave way and she fell to the ground.
