A shocking silence fell in the stable. Black Moon kicked his legs awkwardly, waiting for someone to break the deafening silence.

Wen Jinkai opened his mouth and tried to refute her words. His mind flashed back to the memory of her, an innocent little prey, wandering in the battlefield of predators with a triumphant smile and a mischievous look.

She thought he was a mute acting as a bodyguard, and he thought she was an annoying brat who needed to be taught a lesson. Who could have thought that his first love would become the biggest mistake of his life, a lesson worth learning.

He had a duty to his country, to the royal family, who sheltered him when his parents wouldn't. He swallowed his pride, his emotions, his desires, all for a loyal friend to ruin the only good thing he had stumbled upon.

"Xueyue, I——"

"Leave it to another woman who looks like her."

Li Xueyue glared at him condescendingly. Was this why he was obsessed with her? Because she looked like someone he had loved and lost? Did he think she would be exactly like that girl? Whoever she was.

"Commander, you disappoint me in many ways."

She shook her head gently, and in the blink of an eye, Black Moon ran out of the stable. Wen Jinkai ran towards the door, but it was too late. He encountered the dust raised by the Thunder Horse.

Black Moon was a whirlwind of pure physical strength and stealth. He rushed out of the capital, fearlessly trampling the forest leading to the sprawling Li Mansion on the outskirts of the city. Most elite families lived in the suburbs of the capital because it was more secluded and quiet.

On normal days, Li Xueyue felt comfortable with the breeze blowing through her hair, and the fresh air blowing past her took away all her worries and stress. Today was different. His behavior, his demanding ways, and the manipulative nature of his behavior came to her mind. She was glad that Yu Zhen existed in her life, otherwise she would never be able to escape Wen Jinkai, the man who could bring Wu Yi to his knees.

"I've officially lost my mind." She let out a shaky laugh that was swallowed by the hollow whistling wind.

Yu Zhen? Why was he the first suitor she thought of? After his performance today, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to focus on her love life anymore. Love was supposed to be a pitiful thing. She foolishly thought that true love was easy and that simple love was real.

She shook her head, hoping to clear her mind, but all she could think about was Yu Zhen this and Yu Zhen that. From his easygoing personality to the mysterious pain hidden in his agate eyes, there were so many things she didn't know, but wanted to know more.

So, you can imagine how surprised she was when Heiyue braked suddenly at the gate of Li's house. Riding on horseback, with a proud and confident look, the man who blocked their way was a man Li Xueyue had not expected.

Yu Zhen sat motionless on his high horse, watching her wide eyes and parted lips. He was serious and quiet, his gloved hands loosely gripping the black leather reins. The wind fluttered, blowing through his hair and lifting his white coat to reveal the golden embroidery of a roaring dragon.

He was here, but how did he get here? She had been in the stable. Did he chase her when she left the stable? But that was impossible, Black Moon was one of the fastest horses in the capital!

"How did you get here?"

"A shortcut," he replied briefly.

"Why are you here?" She could sense Black Moon's uneasiness as he paced from side to side, eager to get to his private stables.

"You left, and I chased you."

Li Xueyue bit her lower lip. "Well, you're too late."

“Better late than never.”

"You're wrong." Li Xueyue sighed and urged Heiyue to take a step back. "You're blocking my way. Go away."

"You want to know more about me, don't you?" Yu Zhen asked. He pulled the reins, signaling Xiao Lizi to move aside and give them a chance to escape. He would not cage a sparrow like her. He would not allow himself to be treated so cruelly. She was born to soar in the sky, not to be imprisoned in a cage.

"I'd rather you show it than say it." Li Xueyue was stunned. He actually gave way to her as long as she wanted. So why didn't she?

"Don't you want to know my secret?"

"They're secret for a reason."

"You are afraid that I will share you." Yu Zhen pointed out.

She responded, looking down at him with a stony expression on her face.

"Your secrets are safe with me, just as you will be safer with me."

"You heard the conversation." Li Xueyue suddenly realized, her eyes full of reproach. After all, how much of the unfolding did he see? Was he present when Dayai made a fool of himself?

“Just snippets.”

"So what's keeping you from hearing the rest of it?"

"I'm busy packing your belongings and have them shipped to the Li residence intact." The corners of his lips pulled up as her face was filled with confusion. He could see that she was racking her brains for answers. She had no idea what he was doing.

"My stuff...?"

“Everything you touched at the market now belongs to you.”

Li Xueyue tried hard to suppress the frustration in her heart. She didn't want to rebuke his kind gesture, nor did she want to thank him for doing something unnecessary.

In the end, all she could ask was, “Why?”

Yu Zhen was confused by her question. Why not? She deserved everything precious and rare.

Finally, he said, “Because you’re interested in them.”

Li Xueyue was so shocked by his words that she was speechless. "You didn't have to waste so much money on me. Now, I owe you——"

"Sunshine, that's not what gifts work."

Li Xueyue pinched the bridge of her nose, praying that she would have enough patience to deal with his confusing behavior. "Maybe one gift will be enough, but so many? I'll owe you."

“You can repay the favor, treat the gift well, wear it, and use it.” Yu Zhen smiled and answered her silly question. What’s the big deal? Money comes easily. She doesn’t have to worry about these insignificant things at all.

"Why are you being so nice to me?" she blurted out, "Is there something you want from me? Just this?"

"I already told you what I want from you, Sunshine."

"Yes, but why? What have I done to please you? There are so many women out there who would be more willing to entertain you than the next."

She bit her lower lip. "We've only met a few weeks. We barely know each other! So..." Her voice trailed off. "Why me?"

Yu Zhen fell into an eerie silence for the longest time. He would answer with "Why not?" But he knew that would not be satisfactory enough for her. She wanted to hear more than that.

He couldn't even comprehend why it had to be her and not someone else. The reason was on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn't get it out of his mouth.

Yu Zhen wanted to say something meaningful to her, to make her smile and feel at ease. He wanted to say a lot, but he couldn't say it at all.

It wasn't because he didn't like her, but because he was afraid to make a mistake and she would slip through his fingers. She was a fleeting moment in his life, but he wanted her to be his forever.

The harder it was to answer the question, the more Yu Zhen realized that he liked her more than he thought. He could list all the lovely qualities of his lifelong best friend, but he couldn't specify all the qualities he liked about Xue Yue. He liked her for reasons he couldn't describe or write down.

"Sorry, I can't answer that question." Yu Zhen exhaled, shocked by his reaction and mentality.

What was wrong with him? It was as if…as if this was more than a simple infatuation with her. As if it was a four-letter word that he had never thought existed in his heart until he met her and saw hope.

"Is it because you can't do it, or because you don't want to do it?" she asked.

"I can not."

Li Xueyue was helpless and could only look at him in disbelief, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Because like him, she couldn't explain why she chose him over the others. She didn't understand why she liked him so quickly and smiled so easily in front of him. It was just... it had to be him. There was no one else.
