Wen Jinkai raised an eyebrow. In the blink of an eye, he grabbed her wrist and prevented her from leaving. "I just want to help you--"

"It's like this, Commander. I never asked for your help."

Wen Jinkai's eyes narrowed as he watched her temper. She loved to lose her temper. Fortunately for her, he was a patient man, willing to work things out. He had learned a lesson from the unfortunate consequences of being rude and violent to her. He would never make such a terrible mistake again. This had already caused tension between them.

"I think you'll need my help this time, though," he commented as she turned to face him.

Li Xueyue ignored him and walked over to Heiyue, adjusting the saddle to make him more comfortable. Heiyue leaned his head closer to her, hoping to get an intellectual reward. She smiled slightly and stroked his mane, running her fingers through his hair easily.

"Wait a minute," she whispered to him, promising him a sugar cube or apple slice.

Seeing her getting ready to mount, Wen Jinkai spoke again. "What if word gets out that you lied to them?" He deliberately didn't mention the royal family. He didn't need extra ears to eavesdrop on this discussion. He gave the stable boy a vicious look, and the stable boy immediately bowed and hurried away.

Li Xueyue tensed up at his mocking words. Her eyes suddenly fell on him, and her lips pursed into a ball.

"You will not."

He smiled. "Of course not."

"I do not believe you."

"Well, I did say that you would need my help one day. I am offering it to you now." Wen Jinkai approached her, but she remained motionless, refusing to retreat again.

Did she realize that her stubbornness would destroy her one day? It was not good to be so stubborn. Was there anything wrong with being soft on him once in a while? He missed her going back to being that strange little thing in the archery competition. She was so well-behaved and cute, what happened? Did he do something to lose her favor?

"Your help comes at a price." She frowned. "I can hardly say this is helpful. More like blackmail."

“In the end, both of us will benefit from it. In that case, does the word still matter?” Wen Jinkai asked sincerely, and seeing the hesitation on her face, a satisfied smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.

She was debating her choice. Clearly, having dinner with him was the winning choice. It wasn’t like he was asking anything daring of her. It was a meal, and he would never do anything to hurt her.

Li Xueyue weighed her options. If she went with him, it would only let him know that such threats were tolerated. When this lie kept lingering in her mind, who could say he wouldn't ask more of her?

Her first thought was to reject his proposal, but that was too hasty. She would more likely report to the Emperor and Empress. The only thing she could do was to buy herself some time and tell them in person that, perhaps, she was finally starting to feel better in the afternoon?

"How do I know you'll keep your promise?" she asked.

"Good idea." Wen Jinkai stroked his chin and nodded with satisfaction. "You won't."

Li Xueyue crossed her arms and pursed her lips. She hated his superiority, and he was as intimidating as ever. He didn't seem to mind.

"But I promise you, I never break my promises." Wen Jinkai approached her and said. He reached out to fix her hairpin that had fallen off, but she shook her hand and pushed his hand away.

"Commander, put your hands aside."

Wen Jinkai's expression softened as she defended herself. She seemed to be on guard again, this time, more so than before. It would be extremely difficult for him to break through her walls. One mistake, and she would judge him forever. He wished it wasn't like this. She wouldn't be so willing to shut him out.

"So what do you say, little deer? Come eat with me?"

Li Xueyue knew that her best option now was to delay the possibility of him reporting to the royal family.

She sighed. "Not today. I've had a long day and am too tired to socialize. Besides, the sun is setting and if it's dinner, my parents will freak out and think it's something else."

Wen Jinkai frowned. This was neither a yes nor a no. "Then when are you free?"

Li Xueyue put her index finger on her chin and stared at the ceiling, thinking about how to answer. "I'll let you know soon."

"Will you really let me know?"

"Don't you believe me?" Li Xueyue was vague and deliberately didn't give him a direct answer.

"Wonderful." Wen Jinkai narrowed his eyes and warned, "Xiaolu, you should know that I don't like lying." He put his hands on his hips, and she sighed and nodded.

"Good to know," she retorted, brushing past him as she led her horse out of the stable.

When he blinked, she was already on the horse, the reins resting comfortably in her hands. He wasn't surprised to see that she wasn't sitting sideways in the saddle with her feet dangling over one side. That would have made riding difficult, and he would have preferred that she sit in the middle of the saddle, where there was less chance of injury.

Wen Jinkai stood between them and the entrance to the stable. "Will you keep your promise?" he asked, raising his eyebrows when she was silent.

"I'll think about it."

"Fawn." He said in a threatening tone. "Don't lie to me."

"Then how do I know you won't lie to me?" She frowned. "At the end of the day, words are just words."

"Is that all you have to trust in me and my morals? I am a man of my word. If I lie and cheat, will my men respect me? Have faith in me! " he argued as the temperature between them dropped and the tension rose.

"I tried to believe you, Commander. Until you showed me what kind of man you were."

"You just don't like that I didn't promise you that I wouldn't have a harem! Do you know that this mentality is quite selfish in this country?"

Li Xueyue closed her eyes tightly. "If God has a heart, please open it and grant me the patience to deal with this beast."

“Also, don’t take my words to heart, because it’s not certain! Whether I have a harem or not should not determine your choice. Damn Xueyue!” Wen Jinkai sighed in frustration, clenching his teeth, his muscles ticking.

"I don't know what I feel about you, but it's not malicious. You're all I could ever ask for, but I'm only human. I make mistakes, I say the wrong things, I have my own desires. If you don't prove to me—"

"It takes two to fall in love, it takes two to get married, and it takes two to make a decision," Li Xueyue interjected, her eyes flying open to reveal the fire burning inside her.

Storm and volcano, ice and fire, obsidian and topaz, their eyes met and a fierce argument that could not be expressed in words began.

"If you can't compromise on an emotional basis, then stop pursuing me."

Wen Jinkai clenched and unclenched his fists. He growled in a low, animalistic voice, "No."

Her eyes widened, the sound was so inhuman, she couldn't comprehend it was coming from him. His face was filled with pure rage, his eyes were as violent as the raging waves in a hurricane. He could barely contain his temper.

"Absolutely not!" he hissed. "I will not stop pursuing you. I will not let another woman like you slip through my fingers again."

“Another woman?” Li Xueyue repeated with a blink. She understood it better than he did. She felt great disbelief at the understanding she suddenly realized.

Li Xueyue exhaled in shock, uncertainty flowing in her eyes. "You want to replace her with me."
