#89 - Death is work, the rest is life (Part 5)
"Crack!" It sounded like piercing through dried meat.
The next second, a miracle occurred.
As a large amount of black aura surged towards the black longsword, Hela's dry and terrifying left half of her body visibly filled up.
This wasn't a simple inflation, but the infusion of vitality.
Her withered face gained a rosy complexion, her terrifying cloudy eyes became clear, new and beautiful eyelids grew on her eyeballs, and her left half of her body, whether it was her torso, arm, or small foot, became no different from an ordinary infant in just a few breaths.
Even her left palm, pierced through, oozed blood.
"Ahhh! Baby! Baby, are you alright?!" Angrboða rushed over like a madwoman, and Loki couldn't stop her.
"Please calm down, the ritual isn't complete yet," Thor quickly stepped forward to hold the giantess down.
Angrboða was just overly excited, not truly unreasonable, and she quickly stopped: "It's okay, baby, Mom is here. If it hurts, you can stop."
The beautiful infant Hela actually returned a sweet smile to her mother. This smile intoxicated both her and Loki.
It wasn't easy. They had three children, but only Hela was relatively normal.
They almost thought they were cursed, destined to stand against the Æsir, but now it seemed that everything could be saved.
Perhaps having been drained of too much power, Hela's head tilted, nearly scaring her mother to death.
But after hearing her daughter's smooth and peaceful breathing, Angrboða was relieved.
Loki awkwardly approached: "Your Majesty Thorns, what is the situation with my daughter…"
"Excessive death power is destined to make half of her body like a corpse. This is the price she pays for obtaining powerful death power." Thorns changed his tone: "If she stores about one-third of her power in my [Sword of Helheim], her strength will drop from top-tier to first-rate, or like the archer Ullr, a second-rate deity. But she will gain beauty. It depends on what she chooses."
Loki revealed a long-lost knowing smile, straightening his back: "I think my daughter will strike a perfect balance between the interests of the Æsir and her self-identity."
Years passed, and on the calm seas of Vanaheim, the joyous music on the treasure ship [Skíðblaðnir] rang out as usual.
The dwarf musicians were still the same, but there was one more goddess dancing on the stage.
"That's right, just like that, Hela, keep your hands moving, exaggerate the hip twists, imagine yourself drawing a circle on a plane with your butt."
"Yes, Goddess Freyja."
The beautiful black-haired goddess danced exuberantly in the sunlight, the golden ornaments on her arms jingling non-stop, and the white silk ribbons on her body fluttered with her passionate dance moves, very eye-catching.
After a dance, Hela hopped over, feeling very jealous seeing Gullveig feeding Thorns grapes mouth-to-mouth.
Hela's voice deliberately dragged out the ending: "Your Majesty Thorns, I want to do that too."
Thorns's mouth twitched: "Hela, it's too early for you to do that."
"Does Your Majesty dislike Hela?" Hela leaned over, rubbing her tender left shoulder against Thorns's chest.
The embarrassment on Thorns's face deepened. Pressed to the point of having nowhere to escape, Thorns could only very reluctantly say: "No, Hela. This, this should wait until you're eighteen. Otherwise, how would the priests in my temple write about me?"
Priests who dare to write content about girls under the age of eighteen will all be burned at the stake!
Hela pouted: "Hmph! Your Majesty, you always have strange insistence."
Thorns flicked her forehead: "Don't complain, this is order! I set the rules, and I must be the first to abide by them. Also, your term of duty is up again."
"Ah, yes, yes, yes!" Hela was so lovely and cute that every god felt a strange joy looking at her. She greeted the other gods: "I'm going to Helheim again."
"See you tomorrow, Hela," the handsome Freyr said goodbye with a smile.
A rainbow light flashed, and Hela first returned to the Rainbow Bridge, then projected to the lower world, the cold and gloomy land of the dead, Helheim.
Appearing before Hela was a pitch-black river [Dajögl]. This river was the border of Niflheim, and there was a gilded crystal bridge over the river, suspended by a strange hair.
The bridge keeper was the hideous skeleton Móðguðr. Anyone who wanted to cross the bridge had to let him suck blood as a toll. Most of the souls after death crossed this bridge on horseback or in carriages, which were burned together with them during cremation.
No matter how many times Móðguðr saw Hela's beautiful figure, he felt uncomfortable. Just as he was about to say something, Hela transformed.
Her right half was still pretty and beautiful, but her left half turned into a shriveled corpse again, making her entire divine body look strange and terrifying.
Seeing her, Móðguðr immediately knelt down in sincere admiration, calling out the name of the goddess of the underworld.
Hela ignored him, raised her shriveled left hand, examined it carefully, and muttered to herself: "No matter how many times I look at it, I feel disgusted with myself. Even knowing that this is my true form, every day when I wake up and see that beautiful me in the mirror, I feel that that is the real me."
She didn't hide these words from Móðguðr, and the bridge keeper continued to tremble, pretending not to hear.
Ignoring him, Hela waved her hand, and a ghostly chariot filled with the aura of the underworld appeared out of thin air, carrying her across the Gjöll River.

Ahead was a forest of iron trees, with only iron leaves in the forest, and no grass grew on the ground.
Beyond the iron tree forest was the [Gate of Hel (also known as Hela's Gate)], guarded by the terrifying blood-spotted giant hellhound Garm, who was curled up in a cave called Gnipahellir.
This terrifying hellhound would only give way when Hela herself arrived, or it could be bought off with a food called [Hela Cake].
Inside the [Gate of Hel] was bone-chilling cold and deep darkness; among them was the sound like hissing and boiling pots, which was the sound of the Hvergelmir spring rushing. In addition, there were the nine rivers of the underworld, among which a river called Slidr flowed with sharp knives.
Further ahead was Hela's palace.
Originally in the epic, this palace would be named Éljúðnir, meaning [Miserable]. Her dining knife was [Gluttony]. Her male servant was named [Slow], her female servant was named [Indolence], the bedroom was named [Destruction], the bed was named [Sorrow], and the curtains were named [Fire].
In this life, these things have all changed.
Hela's palace is named [Eight Hours], meaning an eight-hour work system.
Thorns's agreement with her was—as the God of Death, she must spend at least eight hours a day dealing with the affairs of the underworld, and apart from that, she could freely control her time.
So it became that Hela only wanted to restore her original form for eight hours a day, in order to deter those unruly ghosts in the underworld. Once the eight hours were up, Hela would run to the Rainbow Bridge connected to the underworld at a charging speed, get into a sealed carriage, and quickly return to the Silver Palace to touch the [Sword of Helheim], and transform back into the beautiful goddess recognized within the Æsir.
And she was a frequent visitor to the Palace of Joy!
Unfortunately, the work in the underworld was very heavy, and she had to use a large number of rooms every day to accommodate guests from the mortal world.
In the eyes of her servants, Hela was a workaholic.
The names of everything around her have changed. Her male servant is named [Lightning], her female servant is named [Diligence], the bedroom is named [Hourly Room], the bed is named [Camp Bed].
Even though her servants moved extremely slowly, she couldn't help but urge them to hurry up.
Whenever her parents asked her how she was doing lately, she would add this sentence to her answer: "Death is work, the rest is life!"
