Chapter 19 The Awakened Crown
Harry didn't make much progress with his homework that night.Because of various accidents over the past week, he had to force himself to stay away from his friends and do his homework alone in the eighth-floor room-there were always other people in the library and common room.
However, neither Professor McGonagall's non-animal summoning spell practice and essay, nor Professor Sprout's essay on self-pollinating shrubs, nor Professor Sinista's essay on Jupiter's many moons, could bring Harry into focus. Spirit.Knowing part of it was probably worse than being completely kept in the dark during the summer, as he wondered more and more about what Voldemort was going to do and how he was going to do it.
The problem was, there was no way the Dark Lord would be able to tell him straight up.
Harry was distracted, and his eyes unconsciously turned to the schoolbag on the side.It was stuffed with the Invisibility Cloak, which he had rushed up to the tower after supper to get it.He really wants to go to the library to try his luck tonight, but he is worried that he will be exposed in tomorrow's Occlumency tutorial——
He can't guarantee that he can hide more secrets. If Snape caught him wandering at night, the Potions professor would gleefully put him in detention, and make up for the few times he missed it.
...so, where else can one find knowledge about the Killing Curse besides the Restricted | Books section?
There must be Knockturn Alley, but he probably won't get the chance to go there for a whole year.Owl order?Come on, if the prohibited items are found, Professor McGonagall will definitely give him a good look...
Harry racked his brains for a while, and suddenly realized that there were thousands of books in the space he was in.If they are ordinary books, why need to hide them?
He jumped up from the ground, kicking the crate with the textbook and parchment out of the way without noticing it.But he soon found that there were too many of them, and he couldn't read them one by one.Is there any easier way?
"...The killing curse book flew in?"
said Harry hesitantly. He wasn't sure, whether the spell would work, or if there was any book in the room that contained killing spells. But he soon gave up his doubts, because a dull humming sound began to reverberate, the dust was shaken all over the sky, and at least a hundred books were whizzing towards his head from all directions at the same time, as if they were carrying books one by one. Rotten and mildewed shells—
boom!
There was a loud noise, and Harry, who had nowhere to hide, was buried in the pile of old books whose pages were still rattling.
"...Merlin's beard!"
Harry managed to poke his head out on top of the pile of books, stunned. He couldn't believe that so many people were interested in the Unforgivable Curses before. His nose was itchy, and he sneezed violently, feeling some weight shift in his head.
……WTF?
Harry murmured to himself, quickly pulling himself out of the buried predicament.Raising his hand again, he grabbed the cold curved metal frame——
An aged diadem, probably originally silver, rusted and darkened by age; shaped like an eagle with outstretched wings, the body part of the eagle is set with huge oval sapphires, and another crown hangs from its head. A drop-shaped gemstone of the same color.
Harry wiped the ashes off the gemstones, and looked up at the candlelight again, the brilliant refraction was dazzling. He vaguely remembered that this was the crown that was originally placed on the wizard's head. But how did it fly to his head? His spell doesn't include the crown, does it?
"The essence of books is knowledge, and so am I."
A cold, inorganic voice sounded suddenly, and Harry threw the diadem out in fright. "You...you can talk?"
The crown stopped after rolling half a circle on the ground, and those seemingly fragile and beautiful gems were unharmed. "Extremely impolite behavior," it commented dissatisfied, its tone still cold, "considering you woke me up."
Harry's mouth fell open. "...I just want to find a book!" He argued, but his tone was weak due to the mess.
"The ones that almost killed you just now?" Guan Guan asked back.
Although its tone was as cold as metal, Harry somehow heard the sarcasm in it. "What the hell are you?" He began to wonder.
The diadem seemed to click, and Harry wasn't sure because it sounded too much like a person. "I told you just now." It still maintained its inorganic tone, "What do you want to know?"
Standing where he was, Harry suddenly felt that the relationship between them was not what it seemed.Whatever that battered diadem was, it certainly ignored him.But it's also possible that it's just responding mechanically, and he's too sensitive? "Death Curse," he tried to ask, "I want to know that."
"The only Killing Curse known," Diadem replied quickly, "kills a living person or animal."
"What if it's not killed?" Harry continued to probe. In his opinion, he couldn't be blamed for his nervousness, after all, Voldemort had been appearing a bit too frequently recently.
"Impossible," Guan Dian replied without hesitation, "this is absolutely impossible."
Harry frowned.It doesn't know?
Crown seemed to read something from this silence. "Who survived the Killing Curse?" It paused for a moment, as if thinking, "You?"
Just before midnight, Harry returned to the tower in a daze.Because the crown told him in an almost impatient tone that the Killing Curse was a Killing Curse because it killed the flesh of living creatures.
That would explain why Voldemort came back to life, right?Because his soul is not dead yet?
But this also brings up another question - why can't other people who died under the death curse come back to life?Because they don't know and use some powerful dark magic like Voldemort?
Harry recalled Voldemort's tall, thin figure rising from the pearly mist, and his throat clenched. It felt like it had just happened—less than three months, in fact—but his life was completely impossible to go back to the way it was before.
On Sunday morning, Harry pretended to sleep in to avoid spending time with Ron and Hermione. It was the third Occlumency session after lunch, and he was glad Snape didn't see more.
There were more than two hours before dinner, and Harry found himself unconsciously heading towards the eighth floor again.Wanting to be alone at school, he had no other better choice; but now there was a diadem inside that seemed to be very smart, and he felt weird, and he couldn't tell what was wrong.
With the help of the Marauder's Map, Harry slipped in--without alarming anyone--and began to grapple with the mountain of homework he had already piled up.
At first everything was fine; but after half an hour—
"The moon with the most ice is Europa, not Io."
"Callisto is famous for its cratered terrain."
"Jupiter's halo is composed of matter emanating from Jupiter and Jupiter, which is also in the orbit of Jupiter..."
There are always voices pointing and pointing when doing homework, and anyone will get impatient.Harry looked up exasperatedly, staring at the diadem he had placed on top of the chest. "Can't you let me write it myself?"
"But you are wasting the parchment." Coronet replied, seemingly innocent.
Harry subconsciously kicked some balls of waste paper away from him. "It has nothing to do with you again!"
"Mistakes are intolerable." Guan Guan's words were still cold, "Or you don't need to appear under my nose."
If it hadn't said this, Harry would have picked up his schoolbag and left; but it had said it, and instead aroused Harry's rebellious attitude. "Why?" He asked back, "This place is not yours!"
"Because you have legs." Guan Dian returned even faster.
Harry almost laughed out loud. "Yes, I have legs, so I have the freedom to do my homework wherever I want!"
"Then you must not deny that speaking is also my freedom." Crown Crown retorted sharply, "If you don't want to listen, you can also plug your ears. Or it's simpler, don't write wrong."
Harry wanted to say that he wasn't Hermione, but suddenly woke up.He's doing something very boring - seriously arguing with an object. "Fine, whatever you want," he conceded, throwing up his hands, "you probably love to prove yourself right, but at least wait until I'm done writing, okay?"
The crown stopped for a moment.Just when Harry thought it acquiesced, it said again: "In exchange, finish the story yesterday."
Harry raised his eyebrows high.Because of some defensiveness, he did not tell the crown the full details of Voldemort's attempt to kill him and the rebound of the Killing Curse, but the crown was clearly very interested. "You want to know what that is for?"
The diadem seemed to sense Harry's suspicions. "Everyone wants to know," it said, "don't tell me otherwise."
Harry shut up.It was indeed true, and the first instinct of anyone who knew he was Harry Potter was to look for the famous lightning scar on his forehead. "Nothing special," he muttered. "I reckon you'll have to regret it later."
Crown didn't seem to hear. "Knowledge makes me strong."
This is nonsensical... Harry stared at the diadem suspiciously for a while, convinced that it had really stopped making noise, and then lowered his head and continued with his homework.
The rest of the time flies by very quickly.Harry had successfully completed three long papers - and had dinner in the Great Hall in between - and it was only nine o'clock in the evening. "Unbelievable," he said, rubbing his eyes as the long, wet scroll of parchment lay before him, "I've never finished them so quickly."
The diadem may have snorted, or it may have been Harry's delusion, as it said, "I've kept my promise, it's your turn."
Harry sat up straight. He didn't like to talk about the past, but he had to figure out what it had done to him now.
"...so you just want to know, why didn't you die?" Crown asked after hearing Harry's description.
Harry didn't notice that Diadem's voice was a little softer and less icy than usual. "No," he denied it thoughtfully, "I already knew that, but... maybe I didn't really survive? Some aftereffects, headaches or something..." He restrained himself from mentioning the link.
"Headache?" Guan Guan disapproved, "Compared with death, headache is not a sequelae at all."
Harry found himself unable to agree with this view. But he opened his mouth, but couldn't find a strong reason to refute. "Whatever you want." He muttered, grabbing an old book, "I'll look at other things first..."
For a moment, the room fell silent. The crown fell silent, and the people behind the black cloth picture frame also left quietly.
