Chapter 24
The vibration of the mobile phone woke Ryan up early in the morning again, and he fumbled for the mobile phone with his eyes closed.
"Hello?" he said half asleep.
"I can't find James," said Arthur.
Ryan snapped his eyes open. "What?"
"James and the Whitford boys didn't answer the phone," Arthur said. "Normally I don't give it much thought, but..."
"But?" Ryan said.
"Old Whitford called me last night and asked if I was still in touch with James. He said his son had been missing for a week—"
"What?" Ryan sat up. "You mean Luke's gone?"
"Yes," said Arthur. "Whitford's staff in Russia haven't seen Luke for a week. Old Whitford suspects the boy has been kidnapped by one of his... business rivals." Arthur's voice was hard as hell.
Ryan could only hear his own heart beating violently. "And what about Jamie?"
"Nobody knows." Arthur didn't equivocate. "Whitford's staff saw him occasionally with little Whitford, but James didn't seem to accompany his friend to business meetings very often. No one knows where James lives. He used a credit card in Moscow a few weeks ago. , but there is no record of any consumption after that. We don't know anything, maybe he is safe and sound, but..."
"But something could have happened."
Arthur's silence meant a lot: he worried that his son would be caught up in the Whitfords' shady business.
"You just said you couldn't find Jamie," Ryan said.
Arthur sighed deeply. "Russia...is completely different from the UK. The people I call are either being unhelpful or don't understand what I'm asking them to do, which is understandable. Most of these people don't know much English. I'm afraid the only way now It's just that I'm going to go to Russia myself, but I can't—"
"I'll go," Ryan cut him off, succinctly. "If you can get me a visa soon—"
"You'll have it this afternoon," said Arthur. "My plane is ready to go. I have spoken to your boss and he has agreed to give you time off."
If Ryan hadn't been in a bad mood, he would have laughed outright now.
"You're so thoughtful," he said. "But aren't you a little bit self-assertive?"
"Self-assessment?" Arthur said. "I'm not blind, Hardaway. As long as my son needs you, you can't turn him down. You're as pathetic as he is at this point. You're the best person to go to Russia because I know you'll bring him back. "
Ryan wondered what Arthur would have said if he had known the real entanglement with his son.
"Bring my son back, Ryan." Arthur called his name, much to Ryan's surprise. "Tell him to stop making a fuss." He added curtly, "Tell him his family wants him to come home and they understand what he means."
Arthur hung up the phone.Ryan wasn't sure if he really understood what he was saying.
