When Li Shangshu walked out of the Li Mansion empty-handed, the eunuchs in the palace exchanged meaningful glances. They saluted when he came in, but they were disappointed that the famous Li Chenyang would not obey the royal summons.

"May I ask why this is happening, Minister Li?"

"Princess Li Xueyue is not feeling well. She didn't eat breakfast and has been in bed all morning." Li Chenyang lied without hesitation. He didn't even blink.

The eunuchs were hesitant about their next move. Today, according to the ruthless orders of Emperor Wuyi and Empress Dowager Cixi, they should bring the third-rank princess into the palace.

"Can we meet her?"

"You want to break into a sick young lady's room just to see her?" Li Chenyang responded, his voice full of disbelief. "Didn't the palace teach you any etiquette?"

The eunuchs took a step back and saluted him again. They were afraid of disobeying the royal family, but they were also afraid of offending the Li family. Everyone knew that although Li Chenyang was the youngest minister in the court, he was the most ruthless.

"We dare not offend Minister Li!"

"You doubt my words." Li Chenyang shook his wrist and said directly. Soon, the door of the carriage opened for him.

"Your Majesty, the princess is unwell, and the Duke and Duchess do not want her condition to get worse." He continued to belittle and examine them until they broke into a cold sweat and their shoes were shaking.

"We can't leave until we see the princess..." they stammered.

Bang!

When Li Chenyang knocked a eunuch onto the carriage, they were startled, their eyes blazing with fire. “Didn’t you hear what I just said?”

"Please, Minister Li, we—"

"If the emperor has any objections, he can come and see her condition in person."

The eunuchs swallowed and stared at the floor. After a tense minute, they finally relaxed. "Okay, Minister Li, we will report to His Majesty right away."

Li Chenyang did not board the carriage until the eunuchs finally got on. When the eunuchs' carriage finally drove away, he turned to a servant.

"You heard what I just said, let's go."

Immediately, his servant, a thin-shouldered man, bowed as he had ordered. He understood the underlying message that did not need to be spoken. He said goodbye and rushed into the mansion, ready to personally escort Madam Li back to her room so that she could lie down for the whole day.

Li Chenyang waited until the man's shadow disappeared before he finally got on the carriage. The door closed tightly, and the carriage began to drive towards the palace, where trouble was waiting for him. But when would it not be waiting for him?

Inside the carriage, Li Chenyang breathed a sigh of relief, tapping his thighs with his fingers one by one. Today he had stopped Li Xueyue from entering the gates of hell, but this was only a small victory compared to the many battles she would face. The palace would insist on seeing her - the only unmarried princess living outside the castle walls.

“I kept her safe, Minghua…I should have done the same for you,” he whispered to himself, leaning his head against the headrest of his seat.

As much as he despised the sinister fellow, he could not forgive himself for turning a blind eye to her struggles. He could not forgive himself for not stopping her from sneaking out every night, only to find herself at the crossroads of two men who loved her madly.

After being sent back to her room for some reason, Li Xueyue found herself bored. She read a book while resting her cheek on her supporting arm. She had read the same sentence five times but still couldn't concentrate.

Li Xueyue didn't like being locked in this room. She wanted to go out to bask in the sun, do some archery, or run with Heiyue.

She hadn't taken care of her horse for a while, but she was unusually busy. The stubborn horse would not let anyone ride him. She had always allowed the stable boy to run and roam freely, but she knew that Black Moon preferred her presence to running alone.

After repeating the same sentence for the sixth time, she finally slammed the book on the table. She loved reading, but at this time, she felt upset and wanted to walk around.

Since she couldn't be found wandering in the fields, Li Xueyue decided to explore all the hidden nooks and crannies in the house.

'It wouldn't hurt to hang out in the house...' she thought to herself as she opened the door only to find it blocked.

"I'm going to the garden," she told the guards, and walked out, but they stopped her.

"Miss, in this case, please wear a veil to hide your identity."

Li Xueyue sighed and turned back to her room. She approached her dressing table, rummaged through the drawers, and finally found a veil. It hooked from one ear to the other, revealing only half of her nose and eyes.

She then walked out of the room and headed for the garden, but then decided to explore the other wings and corridors of the house. After turning corner after corner, she found herself in a dark part of the house that she didn't even think was possible.

The Duke always liked his house to be well-lit, so the servants were always required to carefully check all the lights in the corridors to ensure that there were bright lights in every corner to guide people forward.

She had memorized the layout from a tour two years ago, but had never seen this area before. During that time, the twins were the ones who took her on tours, but they took her far away from this area.

"Am I lost in my own home?" Li Xueyue looked around at the gloomy environment and wondered.

She hadn't seen anyone since she'd arrived in this unknown wing of the house. It had been ages since she'd last seen the guard stationed here, but he'd fallen asleep at the sentry post that'd allowed her in.

"Great, Xueyue, you're really lost." She blamed herself and decided to go back the way she came, then paused. Should she explore...?

Li Xueyue didn't know what she was thinking, and decided to try a door in the corridor. Surprisingly, it was locked, which felt very strange. No door in this house was locked, but suddenly everything here was locked?

"That's weird," she exclaimed as she tested nearly every door. Finally, she decided that this place must be locked for a reason. She didn't want to think about it until she passed a door and stopped immediately.

One of the doors was slightly ajar. It was the only door that wasn't locked.

“Maybe I should go back to my room…” Li Xueyue’s voice trailed off. She argued for just a second, then groaned. Curiosity killed the cat. She decided to push the door, and frowned when it creaked open, indicating that it had not been used for a long time.

A gust of dust hit her. She coughed and slapped her hands back and forth in front of her face. This place had not been touched for a long time. But why?

She peered inside and was interested to see that it was a bedroom. A large, girly kind. Maybe for guests? But that didn't make sense. None of the guest rooms were nearby.

"Hmm..." She hummed to herself and slid into the room. Everything was intact, from the untouched bed to the dusty dresser. No servant had ever cleaned the place, as if someone wanted every detail to remain in its original, undisturbed form.

Li Xueyue walked into the room and almost tripped over something, falling face down.

"What the hell?" She was furious when she found out what had caused her to lose her footing.

One of the floorboards had clearly been uprooted. Frowning, she decided to step on it, hoping it would fall back where it was. But it didn't. There was resistance under her feet, as if something was stuck underneath the floorboards.

Li Xueyue bent down to check the floor. She just pushed the board hard, and it immediately came out of the floor, almost as if it was loose for a moment.

“Is that a book?” Li Xueyue thought to herself, reaching out to take out the thing hidden under the uprooted board. Indeed, it was a book, and when she turned the pages, she found that it was a diary. But the question was, who did it belong to?

"We have to find that lady! Where has she gone?"

Li Xueyue was startled by the sudden and frantic voice of the servant in the distance. She immediately put the board away, put the book beside her, and decided to check in her room.

She slipped out of the room, closed the door, and rushed out the door. Fortunately, the guard was still asleep and even snoring.

Walking back into the main house, she nearly bumped into a servant who rushed over. "There you are, my lady," she gasped.

"Is there a problem?" "What's wrong?" Li Xueyue asked as she stuffed the book behind her back, hiding it from the servants.

"N-no…but we have strict orders to escort you back to your room, ma'am."

"Okay, let's go back." Li Xueyue said, and decided to read the contents of the diary after returning to her room.
