Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 7 Gentle Touch
Xueyue was lost in thought and did not hear the footsteps coming from the corridor. The footsteps were loud and tapped on the mahogany floor. The hurried woman was no longer impatient, but the wise duke was gradually losing his patience.
To Xueyue's surprise, an older woman pushed open the door without warning. She was breathless but very beautiful. She rushed out of bed, and her hair was not combed in the usual way.
Duchess Lee Chil-sung is one of those women who becomes more beautiful as she ages. The wrinkles on her face are slightly more prominent, but they are only visible when she smiles. Her warm eyes are always filled with understanding tenderness. Every bit of her shines with gentle loving kindness, the kind of affection that only a mother can exude.
Xueyue greeted the woman nervously and awkwardly, "Hello." Her voice was still hoarse.
Hearing the girl's hoarse voice, Duchess Li Qixing immediately waved to the guards to bring her some water. The older guard bowed his head and excused himself to carry out her orders.
King Li Chenyang took a deep breath and rebuked his wife again. "My dear, what did I tell you about running?" She ignored his question again. This prompted him to stare at what she was staring at. He was surprised to see Xueyue sitting up in bed. It had been a week and a half since she was brought to the manor, but Doctor Yu reported that she was recovering well. He was certainly happy about the news, but not as happy as his wife, who had already ordered clothes and jewelry for the child. The Duchess seemed to have foreseen the future outcome.
Now that the girl was awake, both the Duke and Duchess discovered that the girl was not as similar to their daughter as they had initially thought. Her eyes were wide open and more lively, but she was not as much like Li Minghua as they had hoped. Li Minghua had single-lidded eyes that curved into beautiful crescents when she smiled. The girl’s eyes were wide open, innocent and cautious—almost like a fawn that didn’t understand how the world worked.[1]
Xueyue fidgeted under the intense gazes of the people in front of her. She was confused as to why she was here instead of rotting in the forest. "Excuse me, are you the Duke and Duchess?"
Her eyes scanned the expensive exterior of her beautifully decorated room. With its intricately carved wooden frames, beautifully painted supporting columns, and burgundy carpet with gold thread, it was a room made for the rich. The design of the room was one that her parents had dreamed of emulating in their own home, but had failed to achieve. The Viscount and Viscountess were certainly wealthy, but their comfortable natures did not allow them to spend lavishly - unlike the Duke and Duchess, whose wealth was limitless.
Lord Li Chenyang doubted her knowledge. How did she know that she was resting in the home of the only Duke and Duchess of Hechen? He cleared his throat and said, "You are staying in the Li Mansion, and we are indeed the Duke and Duchess." He glanced at his wife and found that she was so shocked that she couldn't speak.
Xueyue didn't know how to respond to his words. She leaned down awkwardly and nervously, trying to bow in respect. "I apologize. If I could move, I would lie on the floor and-"
"Nonsense, you're injured." Duchess Li Qixing frowned and walked towards Xueyue. "Your right leg was seriously injured and has not healed yet, but the doctor said it has improved. Does it still hurt when you move?"
Xueyue looked up and winced as the Duchess tried to brush some stray hairs from her face. "My arms and legs are a little sore, but not that painful. It's itchy, but I think it's healed."
Duchess Li Qixing wanted to ask Xueyue about the retreat she had seen earlier, but she held back. She said patiently, "Yes, that's right, but for safety reasons, we will call a doctor again tomorrow morning."
Xueyue nodded slowly and glanced down at her finger. She could twist it, but couldn’t move her arm violently. She didn’t know how to react or behave in front of the senior officials. The only thing she knew was to keep her head down and never make eye contact.
An awkward silence fell in the room until the older guard finally returned with a pot of warm water. He handed it to Lady Li Qixing with both hands, and Lady Li Qixing poured it into a glass and handed it to Xueyue, who hurriedly thanked him.
Xueyue drank the water, and felt her shoulders relax as the water washed away the dryness in her throat. She was so thirsty that she drank the entire glass of water in one breath.
"That should be better," Duchess Li Qixing said with a smile, refilling the cup and handing it back to the girl.
Duchess Li Qixing gently sat down on the bed and brushed away a few strands of Xueyue's bangs. The bangs on the side were slightly messy and covered her eyes. When Duchess Li Qixing brushed it away, it revealed the light in her eyes: so big, so frightened, and made the Duchess worried.
Xueyue sat stiffly on the bed, her shoulders stiff. She had never been touched so gently before. No one in the Bai Mansion had pure admiration for her. The Viscountess was never strict with her, but she wasn't very loving either. The Viscountess made sure she had enough food and clothes, but that was the extent of her kindness.
Duchess Li Qixing noticed the stiff expression on Xueyue's face and immediately withdrew her hands. She whispered in an apologetic voice: "Oh, it seems that I scared you."
Xueyue blinked after hearing her words, and quickly shook her head to clarify the misunderstanding. "No, no, it's totally fine... I was just surprised, that's all." Now Xueyue finally quenched her dry throat and was no longer hoarse.
Duchess Li Qixing was stunned by the girl in front of her. Her voice was as sweet as freshly picked honey and as soft as the breeze on a hot summer day.
"I didn't introduce myself well..." Xueyue's voice became smaller and smaller, not knowing what to say.
Duchess Li Qixing listened to her words, blinked, and waited patiently for her to continue.
“My name is B… I’m Xueyue.” Xueyue decided not to mention her last name in her introduction. She wasn’t sure if the Duke and Duchess had heard about the royal decree at court. If they really were the Duke and Duchess, that meant they were very, very close to the royal family. Which meant they might have gotten a whiff of the decree sentencing the youngest daughter of the Bai clan to death for rape.
Xueyue's hands trembled when she thought of how she had been framed and falsely accused of murder. The nanny who had raised her father had been brutally stabbed to death. The only source of the weapon found was a sharpened hairpin that Xueyue often wore. Needless to say, her father made a judgment on the spot and demanded that she be punished. She knew that she had been framed by Bai Tianai. She didn't know exactly why, but she could make some educated guesses.
"Xueyue, a very lovely name." Duchess Li Qixing said with a smile. This concealed her curiosity and confusion. The name sounded a little familiar, but where did she seem to have heard it?
