In less than a minute, a guard walked into the tent and bowed deeply.

"I apologize for the interruption, your Excellency, ma'am, but there is a gentleman outside who requests - no, I mean, requires an audience." He swallowed visibly, and his hands were shaking. Whoever was there must be a force to be reckoned with.

Every guard under the Li family has been trained by the imperial army. Their methods are rough and cruel, and they should not be underestimated. The royal family has perfect expectations for their army, so every soldier tries his best to complete the impossible task. They are not perfect, but they are very close to perfection.

For a Guardsman, boot shaking is a serious matter.

However, Lord Li Chenyang was amused by what was happening before his eyes. Although Xueyue had only participated in one game, it was enough to cause quite a stir. He was very happy about it.

"Let Mr.... come in." Li Chenyang smiled at the teacup. His hesitation in the choice of words cleverly stabbed Wen Jinkai.

The guard glanced nervously at the twins and said hesitantly, "My lord, I shouldn't say this, but this gentleman—"

"Do your duty." A cold voice came into the tent, and the sound alone was enough to freeze the guards' hearts.

The poor guard swallowed hard, raised his head, and revealed his pale face. "Commander, I..." Before he could finish his words, he felt dizzy.

Wen Jinkai didn't spare the man a second glance. His attention quickly turned to Xueyue, and he didn't have time to look away. He was amused by her disapproving look, which seemed to question his presence in the tent. He looked directly into those curious eyes and paid her respect. He expected her to look away, or shyly look back, but she did the opposite. She stuck her tongue out at him, then hid behind one of the twins.

Far from being offended by her, he found it amusing.

"Good afternoon, Commander Wen." Li Chenyang placed the teacup on the side table. "How can I help you?"

Wen Jinkai looked away from where Xueyue was standing. He cleared his throat, but found his attention shifted to the corner of his eye. Instead of using one of the twins as a shield, Xueyue slowly approached one of the chairs. She sat down eloquently, pretending that he was not here.

Duchess Li Qixing noticed Xueyue's behavior and found it a little strange. Wasn't this child talking to him a few minutes ago? She watched Xueyue playing with the pendant hanging around her waist nonchalantly. The next second, the commander's eyes suddenly looked at the pendant, and his eyes narrowed in displeasure. Was he annoyed by her behavior?

Wen Jinkai forced himself to look away from Xueyue and turn his attention back to King Li Chenyang. He said, "I just want to congratulate Li Xueyue on her victory."

"Didn't you have enough time to congratulate her when you saved her from falling?" King Li Chenyang asked amusedly.

He didn’t miss Wen Jinkai’s obvious interest in Xueyue. He wasn’t sure he liked the Commander around her, though. He wasn’t one of Duke Wen’s favorite heirs. But the Commander was wealthy and prestigious in his own way. His accomplishments were endless, as were his connections.

Duchess Li Qixing finally understood. Xueyue looked like she was playing hard to get. She glanced at the girl and thought to herself, "Xueyue is hard to get."

"No, I didn't." Wen Jinkai replied coldly, glaring at Li Chenyang.

Li Chenyang froze under Wen Jinkai's sharp gaze. He understood why the soldiers would be afraid of this man. His eyes were no joke. For the soldiers, giving up their honor and dropping their swords was enough.

"Go congratulate her, and I wish you a safe journey." King Li Sheyang chuckled in his heart. It was so fun to poke this bear, especially when a certain lady put a collar on the bear.

Xueyue continued to turn the pendant while humming a little tune.

Wen Jinkai's eyes were sharp. "Why didn't she wear the pendant I gave her? Didn't she like it? If she wanted, he could have made it with a different design. Maybe black doesn't suit her."

"Congratulations," he said briefly in his most monotonous voice. She had obviously not expected this, and she looked up sharply. He noticed how round her eyes were, like a deer exploring its new surroundings.

"Thank you, Commander," she replied in the same flat voice, but gave him a small smile.

He studied her silently, unconsciously taking another step closer. He didn't care about the shuffling footsteps behind him, nor the pair of twins in deep thought. She tilted her head slightly, not knowing what he would do next. He wondered if she was born so cute or just pretending to be so cute.

One look at her lively hazel eyes told him she didn't mean it. She was naturally charming.

"Commander?" she said softly, instantly pulling him out of his daydream. He cleared his throat and glanced at the Duke and Duchess, who looked around as if they saw nothing.

He liked that she didn't shy away from his gaze in embarrassment. He had been told that such behavior was often too intimidating and intense. He tried his best to soften her mood, but he wasn't sure it was working.

Xueyue didn't know why he was looking at her so intently, his incredibly dark eyes were so dim that she could see nothing but her reflection. His chin was ticking. He was upset about something. How was it before?

“Your twirling pendant is so pretty.”

"Oh, the Duchess brought it to me..." She trailed off, finally realizing what he meant. Before she could answer, he turned his attention elsewhere.

"Now that I've said what needs to be said, have a great day," he said, turning to the Duke and Duchess. "Prince Li Chenyang, Princess Li Qixing." He nodded in greeting, walked to the tent door, and then gave the twins a knowing smile. "Li Chenyang. Li Wenmin."

“Wait-!” Xueyue exclaimed and stood up from her seat abruptly. She didn’t know why he left suddenly, which made her panic.

The commander pretended not to hear and continued pacing out of the tent.

Li Wenmin frowned and crossed his arms. He stepped forward to support Xueyue and said loudly: "How dare this bastard ignore——"

She passed him in a blur of white and purple. He only blinked once and she was gone.

what?

He looked around: "Did she run away with him?"

"So much for playing hard to get." Duchess Li Qixing sighed and sat down on the chair. "I should teach her how to play cards better."

"Mom, you can't!" Li Wenmin gasped: "Are you trying to sell her to the highest bidder?!"

“My dear Xueyue is not a livestock, as if I would do such a terrible thing to her.” Duchess Li Qixing was furious and put an offended hand on her chest. “She is too precious to me, I can’t even imagine selling her to a loveless marriage.”

“Oh.” Li Wenmin calmed down and straightened his shirt. “Sounds good-”

"But I will allow her to get married at any age she wants."

"Maybe when she reaches grandma's age," Li Chenyang said, referring to the Queen Mother.

"Well, if she's in love at that age, of course." Duchess Li Qixing looked at where Xueyue left and smiled lovingly. "Anything that makes her happy will make me happy."

"It seems that we have finally reached a consensus." King Li Chenyang said in a low voice, not knowing that he was holding back a sigh of relief.

"But then again..." Duchess Li Qixing smiled triumphantly at her husband and sons. "She's so close to falling in love at such a young age." She nodded towards where Xueyue ran out.

"She can't marry him." Li Chenyang frowned.

"I will kill him." Li Wenmin frowned.

"He is not suitable for her." Li Chenyang sighed.

"Why?" Duchess Li Qixing frowned and put the teacup on the table beside her.

Commander Wen Jinkai was a very reputable man, known for his wisdom, power, and influence. There were very few negative rumors about him, and he was never seen with a woman. In fact, he didn't even have a fiancée, while most men of his level already had a harem - just like King Wenxuan.

It is strange why the Li twins also have no fiancée, or already have multiple wives. But those who really understand the dynamics of the Li family will understand the reason. They only marry one wife and don't look at others. This is what their father, Li Chenyanggong, taught them since they were young.

One wife is enough. If you must know another partner, then you should not get married in the first place. A person has only one heart, how can he give it to more than one person?

"I just don't like Xueyue marrying a man who is often away fighting. She will be lonely at home." Li Chenyang said for his sons, who were struggling to find a suitable excuse beyond the basic facts. They wanted to keep Xueyue's attention for a longer time.

Xueyue always knows how to get it right with the twins - something many have tried and failed at. Mainly because her actions are so natural and never forced. There is a refreshing authenticity about her that is hard to find these days.

"Didn't you say the war would be over soon?" Duchess Li Qixing raised her eyebrows. "The Battle of Yijing, by the way, was won by a commander you despise, and the enemy was ready to raise the white flag. They were seriously overstretched and under-resourced and could not fight any more. If they knew what their interests were, well, they would surrender."

"My dear, this is why you don't understand us men. We are proud by nature, and we will only consider surrendering when we are forced into a corner." Li Chenyang shook his head.

"There is discussion of a treaty, as well as a plan to split the territory we are fighting over in two, but the details have not yet been finalized."

“But it’s happening, isn’t it?”

"Well, yes-"

"That's possible." Duchess Li Qixing said proudly. "Besides, you've seen how obsessed the commander is. I don't think he's the type to leave his wife at home."

"Wife. It's singular, not plural." Li Wenmin frowned. "If he takes another one, I will kill him."

“What do you have to do with murder?” Duchess Li Qixing was annoyed.

"In theory, of course, Mom." Li Wenmin smiled embarrassedly, but everyone in the tent knew that in theory it was not possible.
