Li Minghua is still alive…? Did Wen Jinkai hear Xueyue’s words correctly? He raised his head sharply and looked at her in surprise. His lips parted, and this information made him dizzy.

"You heard it right." Li Xueyue said. "Li Minghua is still alive."

"How do you know?" Wen Jinkai said as he took a step closer to her.

Li Xueyue raised her chin, not flinching from his threatening gaze. He continued to walk towards her, but she didn't move. She knew his trick. He was trying to scare her into telling the truth, but the fact was that Li Minghua did not die in that fire. She survived because the queen allowed her to.

"I will tell you, but not here." Li Xueyue said.

She turned her gaze to the Shadowguard. She knew that revealing this information would put her in danger. People might accuse her of being the queen's murderer, but she had a feeling that Wen Jinkai would not betray her like this.

Or will he... ?

Li Xueyue stared into his eyes. They were heartbroken and lost, but strong and determined. They were the eyes of a soldier who had killed more lives than he had lived.

“They won’t tell anyone what happened between us,” Wen Jinkai said. “How do you know—”

"You just have to trust me." Li Xueyue said.

Li Xueyue felt it was too dangerous to tell him the truth. Although she should believe him, she couldn’t. His connection to the royal family was too deep. What if he learned of the queen’s death and decided she was the murderer because she eavesdropped?

Li Xueyue had an uneasy feeling that the murderer was Li Minghua. She bit her lower lip. If she remembered correctly... the murder weapon was a hairpin.

Wen Jinkai couldn’t believe her. He couldn’t believe anyone in the palace. Someone had broken into his room. How exactly they had done it, he didn’t know. But they had stolen Li Minghua’s hydrangea hairpin. He had been looking for it all morning.

But to no avail, he couldn’t find the hairpin. Who else, besides the Queen and the Second Prince, knew of its existence? He doubted that the Li family would go to such great lengths to break into his room. Only the Queen was qualified to enter his room, but he doubted it was her. So who else would come to snatch the hairpin?

Without any warning, Wen Jinkai's body shook violently. He realized something. When he rushed into the Queen's bedroom that night, someone saw him holding a hairpin. That maid. The person whose eyes were exactly the same as Li Minghua's.

"We shouldn't stand here all day." Li Xueyue gritted her teeth and said, "You will know the truth soon."

Wen Jinkai narrowed his eyes. "Tell me the truth now. Otherwise, you can't go home."

"If necessary, I will die with this information." Li Xueyue crossed her arms. "Once I'm dead, you'll be curious about everything I know."

"When enemy soldiers are captured, there's more than one way to get them to talk," Winkinkae hissed. He moved closer to her until their chests touched.

Under his stern gaze, she didn’t flinch once. Li Xueyue thought she was invincible. This idea made him very happy. He raised his hand and reached for her chin, but she shrank back.

Wen Jinkai was stunned. He saw fear flashing in her eyes - fear of being hit by him. Did she think he would hurt her? The thought alone made him angry. What a stupid thing to be afraid of. She reacted like she had grown up in an abusive family.

Wen Jinkai said sharply, “Never mind.” He turned his back to her and walked down the corridor again, which surprised Li Xueyue.

Li Xueyue didn't know what caused his sudden change of attitude, but she decided not to question it. Whether she was willing to tell him what happened was up to her. She bit her lower lip anxiously. She didn't know what forced her to tell him this information.

But when she looked up and saw his broad shoulders, hunched and depressed, she knew why. She felt so sorry for him. She had hoped that this little message would bring him hope. She thought it would cheer him up, just a little.

Li Xueyue didn't know what made her feel for him. Maybe it was because he always tried his best to help her, or maybe it was because he was an idiot. She decided it was the latter.

Li Xueyue had expected Wen Jinkai to simply lead her to the palace gates and leave her to struggle to find her way home. She was surprised that he actually escorted her home. True, they rode together on his horse and his arms were on either side of her body, but he did not speak or touch her inappropriately.

"Xiao Yue!" Li Wenmin couldn't help but shout when she saw her riding on a big horse.

"Here you go." Li Wenmin sighed. He engulfed her as she slid off her horse. "I was worried about you getting stuck in the chaotic courtroom."

Li Xueyue heard the worry in his voice but didn't see it on his face. His arms were around her, trembling, as if he was terrified at the thought of losing her.

Li Xueyue reached around her brother and hugged him tightly. It had been a long day. His gentle embrace reassured her that everything would be okay, even if it wasn’t.

"Where are mom and dad?" Li Wenmin asked as he stepped back. He was so focused on her that he didn't see Wen Jinkai urging his horse to leave the manor. It wasn't until the horse galloped away that Li Wenmin saw something.

"Who is that——"

"Don't bother with him." Li Xueyue said, knowing how he would react after knowing the truth. "I haven't seen my parents."

"What do you mean?" Li Wenmin asked. "How can you go home without their help?"

Li Xueyue opened her mouth and told the whole story. It started with her court summons, then the unidentified soldiers broke into the palace, then the chase of Princess Wang Qixing and lost her way in the palace, and finally she fell unconscious beside the queen's body.

Li Xueyue explained everything in great detail, without missing any details except for Wen Jinkai's matter.

"I don't know what to say," Li Wenmin muttered. He felt that he needed to sit back and take in the amount of information that was being revealed. "The queen is dead... you thought Li Minghua was still alive?"

"Yes." Li Xueyue nodded. "When my mother said she saw Li Minghua from a distance, I thought she was crazy. But when I got lost and sneaked into the queen's bedroom, I clearly heard her call someone Minghua in the room."

Li Wenmin didn't know where to begin. He was overjoyed to hear that Li Minghua was still alive, but part of him didn't believe it. The coincidence that she survived that fire was surreal. It was a dream come true. He needed to see Minghua in person to believe it.

"Are you sure the queen is dead?" Li Wenmin asked as he began to welcome her into the manor.

"I saw her body with my own eyes." Li Xueyue cringed at the thought of the queen's pale blue body. "When I woke up, my mother kicked me out of that room. Until now, I still don't know who attacked me from behind. It looks like they wanted to frame me for murder."

Li Wenmin nodded slowly. "The identity of that person is a mystery, but I agree." He clenched his fists in anger, his face darkening. Who on earth wanted to hurt his precious sister? Whoever it was, they'd better be prepared. He wouldn't let them get away unscathed.

"Let's go in," Li Wenmin said. "Chen Yang is so worried at home. He's pacing back and forth like this, and I'm afraid our floor has been dented."

Li Xueyue bit her lower lip. "I don't think any of us expected things to get worse so quickly."

"Yes." Li Wenmin sighed helplessly. "Our plan is to get you and the others home as soon as possible. Now it's nightfall. Mom and Dad are not home yet. I'm worried."

"Mother had already kicked me out of the Queen's room less than an hour or two ago. I think she'll be fine. It's only a matter of time before she and Dad come home."

Li Wenmin placed a hand on her back and began to guide her into the manor. "I hope so."
