Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 238: Journey of Sin
Li Chenyang knew that once the military takeover began, there would be no turning back. It was now or never. The future of the country was in his hands. The only person who could stop them from slaughtering the entire royal family was Wen Jinkai. This man sat next to the sofa in the Duke's private study.
Wen Jinkai was unsure of the purpose of the meeting. He had heard a disturbing rumor that was probably false. But when Wen Jinkai saw the expressions of Li Chenyang and King Li Chenyang, he knew something was wrong.
"Does anyone want to talk?" Wen Jinkai finally said, "Or should we sit around this table and have a tea party?"
Li Chenyang pursed his lips. The last time he had an in-depth discussion with Wen Jinkai, the result was not smooth. The mess he made that day will continue to be unforgivable.
Li Chenyanggong knew he was walking on thin ice. The wrong choice of words could cause a domino effect of problems. “Do you love my daughter Wen Jinkai?”
Wen Jinkai is nervous about this unexpected question. Which daughter? Li Minghua or Li Xueyue? Both women have had an impact on his life - and one of them has made his life the worst.
"Sometimes I wonder what your motive was for taking my daughter out of this home and sending her back without warning," said Lord Li Chenyang. "Is it because you gave her a different kind of freedom? A freedom disguised as a cage?"
Wen Jinkai's face darkened. "You're talking as if I was the only one involved in the plan. Are you going to implicate Wang Longhe as well?
"He doesn't need to feel guilty. Wang Longhe knows the consequences of his actions. Therefore, the emperor favors him more than any other prince." Lord Li Chenyang murmured.
Wen Jinkai frowned and responded. He knew what the Duke meant. Why was Wen Jinkai the only one who left as a free man? The emperor still favored him, and the queen still favored him.
Wen Jinkai did not need to be punished. The result was a life without Li Minghua. A life without true love and affection. He lost the only woman who loved him without scruples. The only person who prayed for him and prayed for his safety.
Wen Jinkai turned his attention to the window. "Is that why you called me? So that I can feel guilty about what I did to your daughter?"
"If you can do something for my daughter, you can redeem yourself." Lord Li Chenyang thought thoughtfully.
"How could I do this? I can't turn back time and bring her back to life." Wen Jinkai said bitterly. "What? You want me to kneel down and beg for your forgiveness? Is this redemption?"
Lord Li Chenyang shook his head slowly. He sat at his desk, fiddling with a key. "Seeing you on your knees is the least of my concerns. I know you suffer day and night for what you did to her."
Wen Jinkai did not respond. He continued to watch the swaying of the trees outside the window. The air was filled with a faint fragrance that he was all too familiar with. This was the peak bloom of her favorite flowers. He would know. She often pestered him to take her for a walk in the garden.
Li Chenyang narrowed his eyes. "When was the last time you knew Minghua was sleeping soundly in his grave, safe and sound?"
Wen Jinkai's eyes suddenly fell on Li Chenyang. "Are you laughing at me?" He was furious.
Li Chenyang shook his head. "I really want to, but for the sake of this conversation, I won't. I'm just asking you an obvious question."
"Minghua's body was not found," Wen Jinkai said through gritted teeth. "How did you know she would be in the tomb? None of you even told me where you had built her place of worship."
King Li Chenyang was glad that his wife had fallen asleep before this conversation. It was too much for her to bear. "That is, her body was not found. Do you want to know why?"
Wen Jinkai narrowed his eyes. "Because it was burned. In that fire."
"Have you ever wondered why the fire happened?" asked Li Chenyang.
"How should I know?" Wen Jinkai sighed. "I wasn't there."
“But there are others.” Li Chenyanggong smiled, knowing that Wen Jinkai was now fully focused on him.
Li Chenyanggong inserted the key into the drawer and pulled out a clear hairpin. The large flower sparkled in the sunlight that filtered through the window. With rose pink, lavender, soft blue, and strings of pearls dripping from the leaves, it was hard not to stare at the hydrangea made of crystals and gemstones.
Wen Jinkai's face darkened. He recognized the hairpin. He had seen it before in the Queen's bedroom. Why did the Duke have Queen Huiyun's hairpin?
"Do you know who this belongs to?" asked Li Chenyang.
"Queen." Wen Jinkai gritted his teeth. "Why do you have this? I think the rumors in the past are true."
Lord Li Chenyang ignored the obvious jab. What happened in the past is in the past, and everyone present here should know this. “Do you really think the queen would wear such a youthful hairpin that she despised?”
Wen Jinkai was puzzled. What was the result of this conversation? "Who knows, maybe the emperor didn't know that she hated hydrangeas and gave it to her. What does a hairpin have to do with anything?"
"You used to pursue my daughter in the middle of the night." King Li Chenyang suddenly said. "You also gave her all kinds of gifts. Have you ever thought about what kind of flowers Minghua likes best?"
Wen Jinkai snorted. "What a stupid question. Anyone familiar with Li Minghua will remember that her favorite flowers are the ones her mother grows."
"What kind of flower is that?"
"Hydrangea." Wen Jinkai's face was expressionless. "What are you doing-" He paused, and the answer was clear at a glance. His face turned from confusion to sudden realization, and then to pure horror. Just one step away from the truth, he suddenly longed for ignorance. Everything began to collapse in front of him.
"Wen Jinkai, you said it yourself." Prince Li Chenyang muttered. "This hairpin is said to belong to the queen. Why do you think so?"
"In her room..." Wen Jinkai's voice lowered.
"You are a smart man, I believe you can piece things together." Wang Li Chenyang turned the hairpin thoughtfully until the light of the crystal shone directly on Wen Jinkai.
Li Chenyang felt the meaning before he saw the engraving. Despite this, he walked up to Wen Jinkai and put the hairpin on the table.
"Would you like to see it?" Li Chenyang asked, but he already knew the answer.
Wen Jinkai didn't even touch the hairpin. He didn't need to do that. "What are you implying?"
"I hope you know the owner of this hairpin." Lord Li Chenyang said. "That's the real owner."
Wen Jinkai gritted his teeth. He knew. This was needless to say. This hairpin belonged to none other than Li Minghua. The biggest question was, why did the queen own it?
"When my daughter left the palace and headed straight for our home in Hechen, she took everything with her. I believe she came to this house in the capital seeking refuge while my men rushed to take her home. She left some things here, but that is unimportant right now."
"You mean public execution," Wen Jinkai said through gritted teeth. "Are you sure you want to continue?"
"Who will be publicly executed?" King Li Chenyang chuckled.
Wen Jinkai narrowed his eyes. He respected the prime minister of this country not because of who he was, but because they were all tools of the Wang family.
"Minghua brought almost everything to Hechen, including this hairpin her mother gave her. I want you to pick it up and take a closer look. It's a very beautiful accessory, don't you think?"
Wen Jinkai saw this between the lines. He picked up the hairpin and began to examine it. The more he looked, the more his heart sank.
Wen Jinkai hoped this was not true. He had seen the hairpin in the queen's room shortly after she had finally allowed guests into the palace. For a while, she had almost gone crazy and refused to see anyone.
The servants said she was ill, but Wen Jinkai knew better. The Queen Mother was hiding something.
There is a line of words engraved on the handle of the hairpin: "My Minghua, may your future bloom like a hydrangea."
Wen Jinkai swallowed his saliva. The truth was so close. All he had to do was grab it.
Li Chenyang sighed. "This hairpin should have been in the Hechen ruins, but it's not. It's so strange. This hairpin should have been burned with Minghua, but it wasn't. I wonder why?"
Wen Jinkai jumped up from his chair. "I've had enough of this rebellious talk."
Li Chenyang gave him a disappointed look like a father. "Did you betray your country because the truth was too hard to accept?"
"You are implying that the Queen murdered the Prime Minister's daughter!" Wen Jinkai roared, "Li Minghua is her niece, the Emperor's favorite niece! My mother would never have done that to my wife!"
King Li Chenyang was indifferent to the earth-shattering screams. He didn't even blink. "You don't believe it."
Just with these four words, Wen Jinkai walked out of the room angrily with a hairpin in his hand.
