Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 228 Revealing the Secret
Li Xueyue let her brother drag her through the hallway. She silently dealt with his anger, knowing it was best to calm herself down. He didn't like others intervening or trying to comfort him. He was just too proud.
"Why should we agree to the Second Prince's request?" She finally asked after the carriage was pulled out.
Li Chenyang pursed his lips. "Wang Jing rarely meets people. If he does this, it must be something important."
Li Xueyue nodded.
Li Chenyang shrugged. "Besides, the Queen and Wen Jinkai always go to him to vent their dissatisfaction. Who knows? Maybe Wang Jing will leak some information to us."
Li Xueyue climbed into the carriage with the help of her brother. "I doubt it. I won't reveal the secrets of my friends and family. It feels weird to anyone who asks to do so."
"There's nothing wrong with having high hopes." Li Chenyang followed her into the carriage.
The driver closed the door for them and walked to the front of the carriage.
Li Xueyue glanced out the window, watching the scenery roll in. "Is the Second Prince really that calm and kind? Or is he just pretending?"
Li Chenyang turned his attention to her. "Well, I rarely interact with him. Wenmin is usually a buddy with everyone."
"The second prince looks gentle and lovely. I can't believe that the queen gave birth to him." Li Xueyue said. "Something in him tells me that he knows that I am not a simple servant."
Li Chenyang pursed his lips. "The Second Prince is smart. If he hadn't been so ill, the Emperor would have chosen him as the Crown Prince long ago."
Li Xueyue's eyes widened. "Really?"
"It's not a well-known fact, but my father told me this," Li Chenyang muttered. "One night, after the emperor and the concubine got drunk, my father found him and dragged him out of the room without revealing any secrets. It was at this time that the emperor casually said how much he valued his second son's intelligence."
"Do you think the Second Prince would know about this?" Li Xueyue asked. "I mean, if my father said I was destined to be the crown prince, but my position was given up just because of my health, I would be offended."
"The position of crown prince has always been the position of the eldest son of the emperor. Other princes can never touch the throne." Li Chenyang explained.
Li Xueyue nodded silently. She decided to change the subject. "Is the Li family planning to..." She spoke cautiously, her voice getting smaller and smaller.
Li Chenyang understood her hint but did not respond. He simply glanced out the window and watched the trees whirl by.
The carriage was a bit bumpy as it drove, but that was normal. The terrain leading to the capital was a bit rugged.
Li Xueyue found herself asking things she shouldn't have asked. She couldn't control it. Curiosity always got the better of her.
"You'd better not know." Li Chenyang said. "Otherwise, people will think you are an accomplice."
"How do you plan to get rid of them?" Li Xueyue asked.
"Summer is coming." Li Chenyang suddenly said. "Is the weather getting hotter?"
Li Xueyue blinked, obviously trying to change the subject. "Yeah, it's too hot to bear."
"Many nobles often move to cooler cities, and the royal family is no exception." Li Chenyang pondered. "They have a holiday palace somewhere else."
Li Xueyue read the clues between the lines. She predicted what was going to happen. On their way to the summer house, something was going to happen.
Li Xueyue swallowed her saliva. Maybe he was right. It was better for her not to know.
"Don't worry." Li Chenyang said. "You will stay cool at home. No one will disturb you."
Li Xueyue nodded slowly. He was beating around the bush today, but she thought it was to keep a secret.
The rest of the journey to the palace was filled with silence. No one spoke, and no one wanted to speak. Both were lost in thought.
"You are here!" Seeing Li Chenyang get off the carriage, the second prince Wang Jing immediately said.
Wang Jing looked at Li Chenyang like an eagle. He saw Li Chenyang turn around and reach out to a person in the carriage. A beautiful woman walked out, matching the description in the rumors. She was indeed breathtaking in the most refreshing way.
When she smiled kindly at Li Chenyang, Wang Jing's heart trembled. It was not because he was interested in her as a woman, but because she was not at all like he imagined.
He thought that with Li Xueyue's title and wealth, she would be arrogant, but she was not.
There was an air of humility about her. Maybe it was the way she carried herself—elegant but not flamboyant. Everything about it was so...effortless. It was like she wasn't forcing herself to be someone she wasn't.
"Nice to meet you." Li Xueyue said with a slight bow.
Wang Jing blinked. He smiled at her politeness. "I hope the road here is not rough?"
"Yeah." Li Chenyang muttered. "But it's always hard."
Wang Jing was amused by his cousin's straightforward behavior. This is also the reason why other ministers like Li Chenyang so much.
"Well, I don't want everyone to stand in the open air," Wang Jing said. "Come on, let's go to my palace."
Li Xueyue's attention shifted to the people around her. She appeared again. The veiled servant. When their eyes met, the servant nodded politely and looked away.
Li Xueyue knew something was wrong. The servants did not nod. They bowed. Who is this woman?
Li Chenyang put his hand on her back encouragingly and motioned for her to go.
Li Xueyue blinked. She didn’t know she hadn’t taken a step forward. “Thank you,” she whispered.
Li Chenyang just patted the back of her head.
Wang Jing noticed Li Chenyang's gentleness. He had heard rumors about how cold and distant this man was. Rumors even said he was unkind to all his brothers and sisters, but this man here didn't fit any description.
Wang Jing frowned and looked at the ground. If he was good to Li Xueyue, why couldn't he be good to other siblings? He kept silent about his doubts and took them to a tea room.
Li Xueyue discovered how well maintained this room was. The windows were pushed open and the curtains fluttered. There was good circulation and ventilation inside, and there was plenty of space and comfortable chairs to sit and relax.
"Please take a seat," he pointed to a chair, and the veiled servant disappeared, most likely to fetch tea and snacks.
Li Xueyue sat down in the chair facing him.
Li Chenyang sat beside her. He faced the door because that was his favorite direction. It would be better to know who went in and out of this room. Although the second prince was as harmless as a fly, Li Chenyang could not take it lightly.
"You must be wondering why I invited you here." Wang Jing said. "Oh, but don't worry, there is no ulterior motive. I don't like conspiracies."
Li Xueyue nodded. "That sounds good."
"You see, my body is very weak, and destroying others has never been my strong point. This is a waste of time, don't you think?" The second prince suddenly asked.
Wang Jing glanced at her, then at Li Chenyang. "What I mean is that if we hate someone, we should say it directly, instead of holding it in and waiting for the perfect opportunity to hurt someone."
Li Chenyang was shocked by the second prince's words. Could it be that... Wang Jing knew something he shouldn't know?
The angrier Li Chenyang got, the more he used a smile to hide his displeasure. His smile forced itself into his eyes and looked very sincere.
"Your behavior is really refreshing." Li Chenyang commented. "Unfortunately, being outspoken will ruin your reputation. You know that? Your mother, my aunt, was very disdainful when she was the crown princess because she didn't know how to control her tongue."
Wang Jing blinked. He was instantly knocked out by his cousin, and the war hadn’t even begun. “Haha… I think so. I’m glad Mom knows now.”
"Well, it would be better if she taught you too." Li Chenyang muttered. "In high society, we don't use violence. Words are our weapons and defense. I'm sure you know that."
The second prince shrank into his chair. He didn't expect his cousin to be so cruel from the beginning.
"I didn't mean to bring up an awkward subject—"
“You didn’t.” Li Chenyang chuckled. He looked at the empty table. “Your servants are enjoying their sweet time with tea and snacks.”
During this conversation, Li Xueyue felt like an outsider, but she knew Li Chenyang didn't mean it.
The way the Second Prince looked at her made her feel uneasy. It was as if he saw right through her - as if he knew everything she didn't know.
When their eyes met, he smiled amusedly. "Oh my god, that's a cute hairpin."
Li Xueyue blinked and touched it. She had forgotten what the maid had put in her hair. She felt the petals of small flowers clustered together. It was a gift from the Duchess.
"Little flowers clustered together like this remind me of hydrangeas. How pretty." Wang Jing clasped his hands together. "Who gave them to you?"
"Who else?" Li Chenyang said. "I hope the Second Prince won't spread rumors."
The Second Prince shifted in his chair. Was this man going to stop her from speaking forever? Was that the plan? If so, it was stupid. He really meant no harm...
