Li Xueyue was stunned, but not surprised. Her heart was completely broken by his words, but what else could she expect? She broke his. The least he could do was to do the same. But why did it hurt so much? It felt as if a thousand little needles were pricking her in the chest, piercing her.

Her eyes burned and her throat tightened. "I see."

"I hate everything about you." Yu Zhen was furious and took a step closer to her.

Li Xueyue took a step back. He took another drink, and the cycle continued. He was threatening and cunning. His eyes burned her more than any flame. He looked at her as if she had murdered his family.

Finally, Li Xueyue was forced onto the bed. She didn't realize it until her calves touched the edge of the bed and bent over. He didn't stop approaching her. He pushed her onto the bed, pressing her back against the soft bed.

Li Xueyue closed her eyes tightly as he pressed his hands on either side of her head. He did not touch her. She opened her eyes and was surprised to see him so close.

He was breathtakingly beautiful. Nothing in this world could compare to his looks. She would never forget that face—not even if she tried. That would be the face that would haunt her in the future—the face of the man she had to let go.

Decades later, she still thinks of him. When another man touches her, she thinks of him. When another man hugs her, she wishes it were his arms.

Yu Zhen tortured her mind relentlessly. His face, his looks, his body, his touch, his hands, everything. Nothing could replace him. She couldn't bring herself to find another man.

"How dare you." Yu Zhen sighed. "How the hell do you dare?"

Li Xueyue was puzzled. What was he talking about? When their eyes met, her heart skipped a beat. She had never seen anything so vicious and terrifying. His eyes were like a starless night, dim and hopeless, without a hint of welcome. His aura was so domineering that it suffocated her. Looking closely, she could see the door of death looming behind him.

"What gives you the right to torture me?"

Li Xueyue blinked. What was he talking about?

"Why do you haunt my thoughts? Why does my heart still beat for you? Why does my whole world still revolve around you?!"

Li Xueyue widened her eyes.

"Why are you doing this to me?" He exploded.

Li Xueyue had never seen a person so angry and so heartbroken at the same time. There was a flash of pain in his eyes, merging into a dark abyss without hope and light. Did she do this to him? What happened to the glimmer and brilliant colors of the volcanic opal?

His sharp jaw tightened, his teeth clenched, and kept twitching. He didn't know what to do with her. He was still attracted to her, and his heart longed for that shy smile. He had so many things he wanted to say, but he didn't say them.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. It was all she could say.

"I'm sorry?" Yu Zhen repeated, anger replacing pain. "What can 'I'm sorry' do? Can it turn back time?"

"No, but it can heal a broken heart."

"My heart isn't broken," he spat out. "You never had it in the first place."

“Then why did you do this?” Li Xueyue asked, reaching out and touching his face. She wondered if he realized that he was leaning into her hand immediately.

Yu Zhen told himself that he should look away. Better to leave this place forever. The longer he stayed in Wuyi, the more he wanted to have her for himself.

"You are the most selfish woman I know."

Li Xueyue tilted her head. The words didn't hurt her, she had heard worse.

Li Xueyue knew he was trying to hurt her. His body couldn't do it, so he used a different weapon.

Was this his way of coping with the pain? Using these insults to comfort himself? Was he trying to convince himself, or was he trying to convince her?

"Everything about you makes me angry."

"Then why are you like this?" Li Xueyue indicated their intimate posture. He pressed her under him, leaving her nowhere to escape.

His fingers balled up the blanket, threatening to tear the fur. "Stop asking me stupid questions."

"Your actions contradict your words."

"Li Xueyue, if you don't shut up--"

"I hurt you, didn't I?"

Yu Zhen became nervous.

"I didn't mean to do that." Li Xueyue whispered. "I thought if I pushed you away, you would move on. We are both bad for each other."

"We're not," he agreed.

"Even so, I'm still attracted to you." Li Xueyue said.

Yu Zhen couldn't bear to look at her again. Those eyes were shining, just like the stars he saw when he returned to Wuyi Capital. The high sky, full of hope and light, but so far away and out of reach. His thoughts were so cliché, but he couldn't help it.

"No matter what you do to me, you will stop." Yu Zhen said.

"what?"

"You will be gone from my life. Never coming back. Our paths will never cross again."

Li Xueyue lowered her hands and pressed them against her chest, hoping that this would ease the pain. This was exactly what she wanted. But the days they had been apart told her that this was not the case. The depression and melancholy she had felt before overwhelmed her, and she didn't want to experience the same pain again.

She wanted to bottle up her emotions. When the jar was about to break, she hoped it would never show up in front of him. She never wanted him to see her at her lowest.

Li Xueyue should listen to her instincts. The best option is to push him away and ask to go home. Everyone must be worried about her.

"I can't," she admitted once.

Suddenly, she felt her shoulders lighten, as if the unbearable pressure was relieved.

"Xueyue, you can't be so cruel."

"I can."

"Come back to me." Li Xueyue whispered, raising her hand to pinch his neck. He had been pursuing her in this relationship, and now it was time to let him know that he had succeeded.

"Don't call me Xueyue, use that stupid nickname. Sunshine, little hamster, I don't care. You can call me anything except Xueyue."

Yu Zhen gritted his teeth. A memory flashed before his eyes. In a previous meeting, she had asked him to call her by her name. But he was too formal to do so. Nicknames are more intimate. It means that there is some kind of relationship between them, a connection that allows such teasing.

Yu Zhen had been hurt by her once before. He refused to go through it again. “No.”

Her eyes widened. She was caught off guard.

Yu Zhen's face turned serious. He climbed off her and rushed out of the tent.

Li Xueyue sat there, confused by his words. Finally, she felt the powerful impact of a word. And her world shattered.
