After Ning Huabing left, Li Xueyue went to find Li Chenyang and caught him in time. He was about to go to the palace with his father, but she pulled him aside and told him what happened.

Like her, he was surprised, but also confused. Why did the Bai family suddenly disappear? But why were there guards in front of their house? It didn't make sense.

Li Chenyang promised that he would look into the matter.

Li Xueyue nodded helplessly and turned back to her room. Then, she sat at the table all day, trying to make new plans. But facing the unpredictable future, she couldn't think of anything.

Everything is a mess.

As the sun set, Li Xueyue began to get anxious. She could barely open her eyes, exhaustion sweeping over her. She felt her heart tremble uncomfortably, and her vision became a little dizzy. The lack of sleep finally took its toll on her, but she continued to persevere.

"Now is not the time to pretend to be sick," Li Xueyue said to herself, even though she was sweating. She stood up, and suddenly, her world was spinning. She grabbed the table for support, but couldn't hold on.

"Excuse me, my servant, but you are not allowed to enter the lady's room yet!"

There was a loud noise in the background, but Li Xueyue didn't realize that it was her body that fell to the floor, dragging the table down with it.

There was a commotion outside. The door slammed open, and she saw vague figures rushing to help. One of them was a man, and his shoes were too ornate to be a servant of the Li family.

Who is he? Is this one of the twins? She couldn't tell.

Li Xueyue didn’t understand how tired she was. She didn’t understand the consequences of sleeping only three hours a night. She couldn’t even open her eyes.

The screams came from far away, but the sound seemed so close. Someone was calling for medical help, and footsteps bounced off the floor.

The last words she spoke before she slipped unconscious were a whisper barely heard by anyone except the man close to her.

"Yu Zhen..." She lowered her voice.

Just like that, her world became dark.

Ten years ago.

"This is the basic principle of our language structure! How could you not understand it?!" Viscount Bai Sheng roared, picked up the book and threw it to the other side of the room.

Bai Xueyue shrank back in fear, trembling in her seat. Her breathing was an unstable gasp. She was so scared that she couldn't breathe.

Viscount Bai Sheng hovered above her, pointing at her score, which was three questions away from full marks.

"How stupid are you that you don't even know the basic steps? Even a pig knows better than you!" he roared.

Looking at the imperfect results, he picked up the test paper and crumpled it up. "Why should I waste money hiring you as a tutor? You are just livestock raised to make money for me. What is the purpose of your education?!"

Bai Xueyue couldn't even speak. She was tongue-tied. Her eyes were trembling, unable to focus. She licked her lips, which were cracked from dehydration. She knew the punishment that was waiting for her.

"At your age, your prodigy sister can memorize materials that are twice as difficult as yours!" Viscount Bai Sheng scolded, "Why can't you be like Tian Ai? You are a useless boy, why can't you be grateful for my kindness to you?"

Bai Xueyue didn't dare to look up. Because of this, she didn't see Viscount Bai Sheng's hand reaching out to her and hitting her on the back of her head with a heavy blow. She covered the burning part and cried out in pain. He hit her with a thick book.

"I'm sorry!" she wailed, but this only infuriated him further.

"I'm sorry?" Viscount Bai Sheng said angrily, "Will 'I'm sorry' give you full marks? Will 'I'm sorry' teach you to memorize words? Can 'I'm sorry' solve any problems?!" He roared, picked up another book, and slapped her with it again, this time directly on the side of her head.

The headache came immediately, and the pain spread all over my body, making it unbearable.

"How dare you waste my money on a tutor? How dare you waste my kindness? How dare you give birth to a child! You should have died in your mother's womb."

Before she could react, he backhanded her. The force was so great that she fell off the chair and landed heavily on the ground. She dragged the ink cup and parchment clumsily. Everything collapsed, creating an even greater mess.

Viscount Bai Sheng blushed.

That night, she was beaten without any remorse. Even when her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she lost consciousness, he continued to kick her. He didn't stop until Viscount Mu Yihua rushed in and begged him to stop. With the help of servants and guards, the irritable Viscount, who was already in a bad mood, was dragged into Bai Xueyue's simple bedroom, which was more like a servant's hut.

Before hearing that Bai Xueyue's test scores were not impressive, Viscount Bai Sheng was already angry about what happened before. One of his business partners at the Bai Trade Port Company had abandoned him without any explanation.

Bai Xueyue's academic failure was the last straw that broke the camel's back. He needed something to relieve his anger, even if it meant beating a child unconscious. Even if it meant a weak and helpless little girl grabbed his legs and begged for mercy, and then he ruthlessly kicked her away.

Viscount Bai Sheng doesn't care about Bai Xueyue. He never will.

Li Xueyue suddenly jumped up from the bed, her eyes wide open. She didn't think she would experience that nightmare again. It was new, but the events were not. Her heart was beating faster than the black moon running across the empty field. Her breathing was rapid and erratic, desperate for air.

She closed her eyes and forced herself to calm down.

"This isn't true. This isn't true. This isn't true," she yelled again and again.

Li Xueyue hoped that these words would calm her down. But this time, it didn't.

"This isn't real... please..." she whispered, despite the harsh reality.

Li Xueyue wants to forget her past, but how can she? She is haunted by nightmares from the past.

"As long as I get rid of them, it will be fine." She whispered, and it was obvious that she was not in a good mental state. "As long as the Bai family is eliminated, I won't have to suffer like this."

"That's all I have to do," Li Xueyue said to herself. "Their downfall will be my salvation."

Li Xueyue didn't know how long it took for her to calm down. She didn't keep track of the time.

Turning her gaze out the window, Li Xueyue realized that it was already evening. She swept her eyes across the room. It was as perfect as ever. The overturned table was put back in its original position, most likely wiped clean.

The maids never touched anything on the table. They knew it was off limits. But when she dragged the table down, everything fell off the table.

Li Xueyue noticed a neat stack of parchment on the table, and other things beside it. Slowly, she got up from the bed and walked to the table. She took a breath and smelled something that made her nose uncomfortable.

"It's a stick of incense," she realized. It gave off an herbal scent, probably a prescription tonic that was supposed to help her sleep better.

"It's a miracle I got more than three hours of sleep," she said, ready to go back to bed until something else caught her attention.

On her desk was a letter, written in perfect handwriting, but not from the twins. It had even more suspicious content. There was an object wrapped in a gold handkerchief with black embroidery.

"What is this?" she asked, picking it up. It was soft and undoubtedly made of silk. The material was indeed expensive, but she didn't care.

By coincidence, she unlocked the item.

Her face turned pale.

This is her pendant.

The man who rushed into the room was not one of the twins, but Wen Jinkai.
