Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 188 She is very happy
Love is a strange thing. It shows up when we least expect it, or when we least need it.
Yu Zhen never experienced what is called "unconditional love." He was raised by a tutor and a nanny, and spent little time with his indifferent parents.
His father is a strict man who doesn't believe in any affection, not even tough love. Yu Zhen's mother is kind and warm, but she tries hard to control her son and wants to rule through him.
Yu Zhen was still unfamiliar with the concept of love. He didn't know what it was supposed to feel like. Was love supposed to make him happy? Depressed? Weak? He didn't know.
The only thing he knew was the emotions Li Xueyue brought him. This time, he felt alive. She was like a breath of fresh air, not because she was different from others, but because she was one of the only people who could make him hopeful about the future.
"I've already said it." Yu Zhen said calmly, "My feelings for your sister are as pure as ash."
"It means it's not pure at all. You will defile her." Li Chenyang frowned.
Yu Zhen shook his head. "No one's intentions are pure. There is always a hidden motive behind every action. There is no such thing as selflessness."
"Your view of the world is warped and jaded. It's horrible."
“This is reality.”
Li Chenyang didn't expect that his words would be used against him. He had always told Li Xueyue about the cruelty of reality, but now, he had forgotten how cruel reality was.
"I will never hand her over to you." Li Chenyang said seriously. "Li Xueyue should stay in Wuyi. She is very happy with us and is safer with us. We are her family."
"If she wants a family, I can start a family with her."
"You shameless idiot—"
"Brother Chen...?"
Yu Zhen stiffened. His ears pricked up and his eyes widened. Her voice alone was enough to drive him crazy.
As she approached him, her scent filled the air, and Yu Zhen suddenly found it hard to breathe. He had a hard time concentrating because his heart was beating erratically. He could have sworn it was dead there. Why was he suddenly excited to see her again?
"Xueyue." Li Chenyang lowered his voice and forced a smile on his face. "You are sweating." His eyes swept to the servants behind her. "Give her a bath and dress her."
"Wait, I—" She paused, her eyes flickering as she looked at Yu Zhen, who was staring straight ahead. He didn't even look at her. Disappointment and guilt devoured her from the inside out.
"I was hoping we could discuss something in the library."
"Of course." Li Chenyang smiled and reached out to pat her, but he hesitated when he saw her messy appearance. He noticed that her clothes were covered with dirt and her eyes were red.
His smile faded and his eyes darkened. "Are you crying?"
"No, it's just the dirt kicked up during the sword fight," Li Xueyue said smoothly. She lied to him again - something she hated to do, but she had started to develop this habit.
"It doesn't seem so. Your eyes are swollen."
While Li Chenyang was distracted by his sister, Yu Zhen quietly slipped away from them. Originally he was heading for the exit of this manor, but now he had a new goal. If Li Chenyang didn't give him the right answer, Yu Zhen decided to find it himself.
"Xueyue, why are you crying? Did something happen between you and Yu Zhen—" He turned around and paused. Where did Yu Zhen go?
"It's okay, Brother Chen, you are right. I don't need love in this life. I need self-improvement." Li Xueyue said, fiddling with her fingers nervously.
Li Chenyang's originally stiff expression softened a little. She was looking away from him. No matter how many lies she told herself, she didn't believe them. This chapter of her life needed love more than ever. Especially since the trauma of the past was catching up with her.
"It'll be alright," Li Chenyang said softly, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and shaking her. Even so, her eyes remained fixed on the floor. She couldn't lift her head, and her shoulders were shaking.
Li Xueyue knew that she could not blame anyone but herself. It was all her fault, and she was willing to admit it.
It wasn't long before the rain began to drip onto the wooden boards of the corridor. Quiet sobs and sniffles echoed off the walls. A strong wind blew through the corridor, blowing the lanterns away and shrouding it in complete darkness.
When Li Xueyue finally calmed down, she was taken back to her room. The maids were used to her messy appearance. Most of her training always resulted in dirty clothes and sweaty body.
The maids hurried to clean her up. She bathed in lavender petals and essential oils, which was supposed to soothe her nerves, but it only made her more anxious. After drying herself and getting dressed, Li Xueyue was finally allowed to leave the room. As soon as she stepped out of the door, a maid rushed into the hall.
She tried to catch her breath. "Ma'am, I have heard disturbing news about the hallway leading to the library. I think it would be best if we remain in our room."
"What happened?"
“Wha, uh—”
"It's okay, I'll investigate it myself."
Li Xueyue walked quickly towards the library, but her attention was elsewhere. Her mind was full of Yu Zhen, whether it was his outburst on the training ground or his charming smile before.
Li Xueyue knew that she could never forget him. Not in this life, nor in the next. Whoever said that first love died miserably was a liar. All the beatings she had received before were not as painful as the heartbreak she felt on the training ground. His words left a scar in her heart.
The strange thing is that all the beatings she took left no scars on her body. Sure, they left bruises, but she always healed. Viscount Bai Sheng confirmed this.
As a child, she had always wondered why the Viscount didn't kill her. But that night with Earl Qin made her understand why. She was a precious livestock that should be fed and then sold.
"What a ridiculous man the Viscount is," she muttered to herself, confusing the servants behind her. Nevertheless, they kept their mouths shut and their heads down.
"impossible!"
Hearing the loud noise and commotion in the library, Li Xueyue was startled. She was surprised to find an unconscious guard lying at the door of the library. In fact, all the guards here were knocked unconscious. What happened here?
She bent over and reached for a pulse, her hands shaking. Aside from the yellow bruises that were beginning to form, there were no obvious injuries.
"They're still alive," she sighed.
Li Xueyue walked into the room, confused by the mess in front of her. The bookshelves lining the walls of the library were in disarray, with books scattered everywhere. In the center of the spacious room was a table covered with books, scrolls, and parchments.
Li Xueyue saw her brother frantically throwing scrolls and parchments off the shelves.
"What's going on?" Li Xueyue asked as she entered the library. "Why is the guard unconscious outside?"
"Not here." Li Chenyang said impatiently, continuing to mess around in the library. Now, almost all the shelves were empty, and the things inside were piled on the floor.
"What's not here?"
"Imperial edict!" Li Chenyang was furious. "They're gone!"
