Reborn Daughter: The Young Lady Wants to Make a Trouble
Chapter 169: Public Duel
Li Xueyue passed by Yu Zhen and watched him walk towards the carriage.
Yu Zhen was furious. His anger could not be expressed in words, but it was vividly reflected in his eyes. He fed his frustration to the demons inside him, but Li Xueyue knew that one day he would break. All hell would break loose.
Li Xueyue didn't look at Wen Jinkai for the last time. She couldn't take her eyes off Yu Zhen. What was he thinking about? What occupied his mind? What was he feeling at this moment?
She admired his ability to remain aloof even in his most frustrating moments, but she couldn't help but fear that he would one day lose his temper. Maybe today would be that day.
Although the Duchess held her wrist firmly, Li Xueyue resisted, if only for a brief moment.
Yu Zhen's dark eyes watched her every move, from the way her heels sunk into the ground to the hand that gripped his sleeve. He looked down at the two fingers pinching the fabric of his clothes.
"Return to the palace," she demanded.
For the first time since they met, Li Xueyue ordered him to do something. She was just a docile and petite woman in front of him, but her spirit was twice as strong as hers. He wondered if she understood himself.
Yu Zhen frowned. "Why?"
Li Xueyue shuddered at his voice, cold and detached, as if nothing in this world mattered to him. Sure enough, as she expected, he had reached the point of anger. It was just pure acceptance, and that was more terrifying than anything else.
"You shouldn't duel in public." Li Xueyue said hesitantly in a low voice. When she felt someone pulling her hand impatiently, she slowly loosened her grip on his sleeve, but he immediately grabbed her loosened hand.
Yu Zhen wanted to refute her until he saw what was in her hair. She was wearing his hairpin, and she didn't even hide it. It was placed in the most eye-catching part of her hairstyle, and she wore it without any scruples.
As she tilted her head, waiting for his response, the hairpin sparkled in the sunlight.
He didn't know whether she wore it on purpose or it was a coincidence. She wore his hairpin just to meet a man who was desperate for her. What did all this mean?
Finally he spoke. "That was the first time you asked me to do something." Yu Zhen said leisurely in a voice she couldn't understand.
Was he angry with her? She couldn't tell.
"If it was anyone else, I would have cut out their tongue."
Li Xueyue opened her eyes wide in fear. She tried to pull her hand back. Her heart started beating wildly when she heard his threat. Perhaps this was a promise.
Duchess Wang Qixing also reacted and exclaimed. She didn't think he was a domineering man. What else did she not know about him? She suddenly realized an unsettling feeling, which brought her fear and discomfort. She knew nothing about Zhen. Neither did Xueyue.
"Yu Zhen..." Li Xueyue lowered her voice, somewhat dissatisfied with his words. She was not old-fashioned enough to want to change him, and she doubted that he would change for her. But at least, he could stop scaring her so bluntly.
Yu Zhen just smiled, but the smile did not reach his eyes. It was a tiny smile that only she could see. Slowly, he raised her hand to his lips and placed a gentle kiss on her fingertips.
Li Xueyue felt her heart being pulled by his little movements, and when their eyes met, her heart beat irregularly.
"Promise me I'll see you again," he whispered, and they linked their fingers for everyone to witness.
Yu Zhen didn't care about the Duchess's angry expression, nor did he care that Wen Jinkai's disgusting glare made a hole appear on the back of his head. He only cared about the petite woman in front of him who had the courage of a tiger and the appearance of a kitten.
"What a stupid request." Li Xueyue thought for a moment, a smile forming on her lips, softening her sharp eyes.
"Please promise me." Yu Zhen pulled her and said firmly.
"Unless you tell me why you left that day."
"I will only tell you if you meet me."
Li Xueyue looked at him with amusement. "From what you said, it seems that we are discussing a business plan."
He chuckled, finally sounding serious. "You're the one who started this."
"Xueyue," Duchess Wang Qixing reminded her, "it's time to go home. Now." She pointed to the sky, hoping to emphasize that it was late, but the sun was still high above the clouds, dazzling and bright.
Li Xueyue quickly nodded in response to her mother.
"I'll take that as a yes." Yu Zhen smiled mischievously and glanced at the other hand she was still holding. Without warning, he leaned down and brushed his lips against her ear. His hot breath touched her, and she shivered all over and her ears itched.
"Put it on," he ordered in a low voice.
Before Li Xueyue could react, the Duchess pulled her back and protected her.
"Too close for comfort." Duchess Wang Qixing sighed. "It's obvious that neither of you can live without each other."
Duchess Wang Qixing began to gently push Li Xueyue into the carriage. "You go in." She turned her head to look at Yu Zhen, her eyes sharp, and pointed in the direction of the palace. "You go," she said to him.
Yu Zhen's smile twisted into a crooked smile. He gave her a curt nod but remained standing. His discussion with Wen Jinkai was not over yet, no matter how Xue Yue pleaded with him to return to the palace.
Li Xueyue knew it, too. She sat in the seat closest to the door, staring at him with her big eyes. She emphasized the Duchess's words with her expression, her tone urgent and serious.
He just shook his head, but before she could say anything, Duchess Wang Qixing got into the carriage and closed the door.
"You two lovebirds need a room together," Duchess Wang Qixing said in a low voice, patting the door vigorously. This was a sign that the coachman was about to leave for the Li Mansion.
“It’s better that there is another person in it, otherwise.” Duchess Wang Qixing smiled smugly. “I may become a grandmother too early.”
Li Xueyue dropped her jaw.
Duchess Wang Qixing smiled. "What's the matter?"
"Nothing, nothing..." Li Xueyue stuttered and looked sideways out the window.
"Wrong." Duchess Wang Qixing ordered, putting her hands on Xueyue's shoulders and pulling her back while others could see her.
"why?"
“Believe me.” Duchess Wang Qixing chuckled. Yu Zhen was already eager to see Xueyue. If she gave in so quickly, the game would be ruined.
"You can't imagine that they would..." Li Xueyue's voice gradually tapered off, and she looked at the Duchess with a worried look on her face.
"Duel?" Duchess Wang Qixing said.
Li Xueyue nodded, frowning.
Duchess Wang Qixing just shrugged. "I just hope they can fight to the death, if they really do that."
"Mother!" Li Xueyue looked angry and embarrassed.
Duchess Wang Qixing chuckled and reached out to smooth Li Xueyue's scattered hair. "I just said that if they are going to fight, at least one of them should get rid of the other. That will make it easier for us."
"What if it was Yu Zhen who was killed?"
"Then we'd better pray for your happiness." Duchess Wang Qixing shuddered. "Especially if Wen Jinkai wants to be a part of your future."
