Yu Zhen loosened his grip on her hand, and the worry on his face turned into disbelief. He could only look at her, nothing, not knowing what to say.

A lump formed in her throat and a stinging sensation spread through her chest. It was as if someone had plunged a knife deep into her heart, and her eyes burned with regret.

"Telling him the truth was the worst decision I ever made," she scolded herself, stepping away from him and hugging her elbows. She shook her head, scolding herself for being so stupid. This was exactly what she had expected. Now he would think of her as inferior to him. He would never look at her the same way again.

Li Xueyue knew she shouldn't blame herself for this. It wasn't her fault that she was born with this ignominious title. Maybe society in the future wouldn't care so much about this, but right now, they were in the present - a world full of judgment, where flaws were weaknesses.

Suddenly, the room was filled with a suffocating feeling. Her eyes were burning and it was hard to swallow. What should she do in this situation? Just stand there like a fool?

Li Xueyue tried to calm the rising uneasiness in her heart. He could not accept this shortcoming of hers. And she would never allow herself to be with a man who regarded her as inferior.

It was hard to make her feel proud, but she did it. Li Xueyue barely raised her chin, walked past him, and decided it was time to go back to the room.

No matter how much she liked him, she wouldn't allow herself to be swayed. She refused to be with someone who couldn't accept her flaws.

"Where are you going?" he asked suddenly, his voice low and dangerous.

Li Xueyue forced her optimistic heart to show. It jumped for joy, thinking that he had changed his mind. How stupid was her heart to think that he would be so kind?

"To my room," she said curtly, her eyes forward, her back to him. Why should he care where she was going? He had lost all respect for her, hadn't he?

"why?"

"This discussion is over."

"No, that's not right."

She turned around, irritated by his words, ready to tell him what was on her mind. Her eyes widened when he suddenly appeared in front of her. When did he move? She didn't even hear the shuffling of his clothes, nor the sound of his approaching footsteps.

“Why are you like this?” Yu Zhen whispered, his eyes as stiff as obsidian. He didn’t sound happy at all, and she didn’t know it from either her actions or her words.

"I do not know what you're talking about."

"You can't just give up the truth and leave me."

"I'm not leaving because of something I said. I'm leaving because you've made your decision."

"My decision?!" he repeated sternly. His sharp jaw made a clicking sound as he clenched his teeth.

“Then please tell me, what is my decision?” He took a bite, and his burning eyes seemed to be mocking her, the flames burning.

"I don't want to talk about it," she deadpanned.

"So, you can read minds now?"

"I never said that!" she shouted.

"You hinted!"

Li Xueyue’s jaw dropped open. She couldn’t keep her head down beside him. He was now furious, his lips curled into a snarl. She didn’t care about his frustration at all.

"I just--"

"You drew your own conclusions." He frowned.

"So what? I was right, wasn't I?!" She threw her hands up in anger. What had he been angry about in the first place? What gave him the right to be so angry with her?

Yu Zhen's reaction was like a slap in the face, his eyes narrowed dangerously into a thin line.

"Do you think I'm that low? To judge you for something you can't fix?"

It was Li Xueyue's turn to fall silent. She opened her mouth, then closed it again, wanting to refute him with some clever words to shut him up.

"I would never think you were—"

"You did it," he said angrily, his fingers curling into fists.

Li Xueyue was so angry that her blood boiled. At this moment, she despised him. He turned the situation around and accused her of doing something untrue.

"I didn't! Don't jump to conclusions!"

"Now you know how that feels." His voice was murderous yet calm, something she hadn't expected.

Li Xueyue's voice stopped abruptly. She was speechless. When she assumed what he thought of her, was this how he felt?

"You didn't even give me a chance to explain."

"Neither have you," she retorted.

"That's because you decided to leave."

"Do you really think I'd judge you for that?"

Li Xueyue blinked. Yes. She did. The answer was written on her face. She held her lower lip in her mouth and couldn’t respond.

Yu Zhen sighed heavily at her, full of dissatisfaction.

An uncomfortable silence fell over them. Neither of them wanted to talk.

Li Xueyue was no longer frustrated with him. She was more annoyed with herself. No one had yet made a comment about her status, so why would she think he would be any different? Why did she like to think about the worst that could happen? Was it because that was her coping mechanism? To prepare herself before the pain happened? So that it wouldn’t catch her off guard?

Yu Zhen didn't speak for a long time. He just stood there without even a chance to look at her.

After what seemed like an eternity of silence, she found it too much to bear. "Well, I did think you would criticize me for the facts."

"why?"

"Because it's a shameful thing for a lot of people."

"I know it is."

Her head popped up.

“I don’t agree.” Yu Zhen kept his distance from her. He didn’t want to overwhelm her. He knew she was too eager to accept anything he was going to say now.

"No buts."

"Have it?"

"not at all."
