End of the World
Chapter 29 Entering the Shelter
"I didn't expect there are so many survivors out there!" Zhang Xingguo sighed. Wu Bin and his companions were the largest group of survivors in recent times.
"Yes, they know how to unite, and this is the most important thing!" Zhu Zhenguo said. Team unity and harmony are the most important things for survival outside. Wu Bin's team has no class distinction, and everyone is more like a group of good friends gathered together.
Zhang Xingguo nodded. He often went on missions and found that most of the survivors he rescued were not very united and even had enemies with each other, so they were not living as well as Wu Bin's team.
"Lao Zhang, was the operation successful?" Zhu Zhenguo suddenly asked. He and Shi Yibo's platoon was one of the covering forces. If they failed to achieve the goal after paying such a huge price, then all their efforts and sacrifices would be in vain.
"It's a half-win, half-lose situation!" Zhang Xingguo sighed. The operation only achieved part of its goal.
Zhu Zhenguo was silent. He knew that his comrades had tried their best. There were simply too many zombies there, and this was also a loss due to insufficient preparation.
"Forget it, let's not talk about this. Let Captain Wu and the others get ready. I'll take them to the shelter!" As Zhu Zhenguo's comrade-in-arms for many years, Zhang Xingguo understands his temper.
"Is it okay to do this?" Although he knew there would be no problem, he still wanted to confirm it.
"What are you afraid of? I've been annoyed with those guys in the Public Security Brigade for a long time. They have no right to touch the people our troops bring back!" Zhang Xingguo said domineeringly. With the above regulations, he was not afraid of anything.
"What should I do during the physical examination?" Zhu Zhenguo asked.
"Just take them back to the army's physical examination station. We have to get checked every time we come back from an outing. It's no problem!" Zhang Xingguo said indifferently.
Zhang Xingguo ordered his men to put the fish into foam boxes and then pour a layer of ice on them to keep them fresh. There was no other way as their trucks were not capable of transporting live fish, so they had to return to the shelter as quickly as possible.
Wu Bin and several others drove a motorhome to join the convoy. The convoy was still led by a 09 infantry fighting vehicle, followed by three motorhomes of Wu Bin's team. Wu Bin originally wanted to just follow behind the convoy, but Zhang Xingguo asked them to follow the lead vehicle. Wu Bin had no choice but to do so, as he knew Zhang Xingguo had a purpose in doing so.
The convoy went back along the same route they came. Such a large convoy made quite a noise and attracted many zombies. However, with an infantry fighting vehicle leading the way, it was difficult for the zombies to stop the convoy. If there were more zombies in front, the 30mm machine gun on the infantry fighting vehicle would have fired hard and carved out a bloody path. The power of the 30mm caliber machine gun may not be very great, but it is different for groups of zombies. A burst of bombardment can knock down a group of zombies. Even if the zombies are not killed, they are basically crippled and can only watch the vehicles run over them. After the convoy passed, only a lump of minced meat was left, which was just right for making dumpling filling. It's a pity that the zombies can't eat it, otherwise there would be no food crisis.
The convoy bypassed most of the zombie-dense areas and approached the Wupingshan base. There were very few zombies here and there were sporadic gunshots in the distance. It should be the guards of the shelter clearing out the zombies.
After passing four outer checkpoints, the convoy finally approached the gate of the shelter. Only then did the true appearance of the shelter appear in front of Wu Bin and his companions. According to Zhu Zhenguo, the shelter has two inner and outer walls, about thirty meters apart. The outer wall is twenty meters high and ten meters wide, and the inner wall is just a four-meter-high barbed wire fence with poor defense capabilities. Its basic function is to prevent the outer wall from being affected by any unrest inside.
The convoy drove across a bridge not far from the shelter's gate. Under the bridge was not a river but a ditch, about six meters deep, which served as a moat. Some rainwater accumulated underneath, and there were rotting corpses that gave off a foul stench.
The convoy entered smoothly. Although the soldiers at the gate were surprised to see the off-road RV following the infantry fighting vehicle, they did not stop it. After confirming the convoy's information, they let it in.
After entering the gate, the convoy was finally stopped.
"Wait a minute, stop the car!" A man in camouflage clothes and a red armband on his arm stopped the convoy inside the gate.
"What do you want?" Zhang Xingguo opened the roof of the infantry fighting vehicle and asked condescendingly. He expected to be stopped, but when someone really came up to stop him, his face was still gloomy.
"These three cars behind need to be inspected!" said the man with the red armband, pointing at the off-road RV behind, his eyes full of envy. He planned to find an excuse to get the car here.
"Sorry, we will take this car back to the team for inspection, please move out of the way!" Zhang Xingguo refused directly after taking a look at the RV behind him.
"No, this is the rule of the shelter!" Of course the man with the red armband would not agree, he still wanted to get some benefits.
"Haha, is this the rule of the shelter or the rule of your family? Why have I never heard of it!" Zhang Xingguo laughed angrily. How could he not know what the man with the red armband was thinking? How could the Government Affairs Department employ such a scum?
"In short, all outsiders are under our jurisdiction!" the man with the red armband said with a gloomy face. This rule was only their internal one. The military did not agree with it. The two sides did not reach a consensus on this issue. Receiving and resettling survivors was an internal affair and should be under the jurisdiction of the Government Affairs Department. However, the military did not trust the Government Affairs Department or the people below.
"I remember it does not include the right to receive and resettle people!" Zhang Xingguo sneered. These guys really think they are important. If it weren't for the army, they would have died long ago. How could they still be clamoring here?
"We also have the right to take over!" The man with the red armband waved his hand, and four men in camouflage uniforms came over, but they were holding police equipment instead of guns.
"Damn it, are you trying to get ahead of yourself? My team has fresh fish and I don't have time to waste with you!" Zhang Xingguo got angry when he saw this. He gave you some face for the sake of the public security brigade. You really think you are a big shot.
"Leave the three RVs behind!" The man with the red armband didn't believe it at all and thought it was an excuse.
"Guards, arrest them! They are trying to rob food with weapons!" Zhang Xingguo could no longer tolerate it. The car was loaded with fish, and if it was not handled in time, it would go bad.
Six men got off the truck behind and subdued the five men in two or three moves. How could the man with the red armband, who had not had much training, be a match for the soldiers, even if they were just from the transport team? The soldiers guarding the gate just watched from the side. This kind of situation had happened before, as long as it was not a fight.
The convoy passed smoothly, and the six soldiers finally got on the bus and left. When they arrived at the military camp, the guard confirmed the convoy's information and let them pass. The convoy entered the camp and reached the inspection area.
"Old Zhu, take Captain Wu and the others to check. I'll go and do the handover procedures first!" Zhang Xingguo came over in a hurry and left after saying a few words. He was worried that the fish in the car would go bad and needed to be dealt with as soon as possible.
"Don't they need a physical examination?" Wu Bin looked at the soldiers in the convoy as they prepared to disband.
"If the mission does not exceed one day, you only need to check the body temperature!" Zhu Zhenguo explained, "Just leave the car here, I will take you for a physical examination!" Zhu Zhenguo took Wu Bin and others to the checkpoint.
Several people followed me into the checkpoint, where there were rooms for men and women.
"Take off your clothes first!" The inspector glanced at Wu Bin and the others and said calmly.
Take off your clothes? Isn't this a physical examination?
"They want to check if you have any wounds on your body!" Zhu Zhenguo explained and was the first to take off his clothes.
So that's how it is. Wu Bin and his companions did not hesitate. After all, they were all grown men and there was nothing to be shy about!
Several people took a cold shower first. Fortunately, the weather was not cold. Then they checked their bodies and found nothing abnormal. The wounds had already healed.
In addition to these, the hospital's routine check-up items were also carried out, and it took several people more than half a month and hours to complete them.
The girls were faster. They came out earlier and waited for a few minutes. It was so comfortable to take a shower now. They didn’t dare to take a shower before because there was not enough water in the RV.
"I'll take you to register now and then arrange accommodation. Fortunately, you have an RV and don't have to set up a tent!" Zhu Zhenguo led the way and seemed very familiar with the procedures. He must have taken other survivors to register before.
When they arrived at the registration hall, the registrar did not expect so many people to come at once. He first asked Wu Bin and the others to fill out an information form, then took a photo of each person, which was then printed on a card to be made into a shelter ID card.
"The card is your ID card, just show it when you are checked. The other metal piece is the food ration card. Every day at noon, one person will be given to go to the ration station with the ID card to collect food. Remember, the metal card contains the food ration for all of you. Be sure to keep it properly. No replacement will be issued if lost!" The registrar seriously explained to everyone the function of the cards, especially the metal card.
Everyone nodded. This was everyone's meal ticket. Although Wu Bin and his family had enough food now, they would save as much as possible.
"Okay, I'll take you to the resettlement site!" Zhu Zhenguo got the resettlement area from the registrar.
Everyone returned to the RV. Zhu Zhenguo borrowed a car from the army to lead the way, and the three RVs followed behind.
"Wow, is this a Middle Eastern refugee camp?" The RV followed Zhu Zhenguo out of the military camp. Everyone saw rows of tents outside, stretching as far as the eye could see. Although they had been planned, they still looked dirty and messy.
The survivors looked at the three off-road RVs with envy and even greed. If there were no army or security teams patrolling, they would have wanted to rob the vehicles. Others regretted why they did not think of getting an RV. Even a small RV would be more comfortable than this damn tent.
Of course, not everyone sleeps in tents. Some people have cars, such as large trucks for long-distance travel, which can also accommodate people and are more comfortable than tents. There are also some RVs here, but their number is pitifully small and not as luxurious as Wu Bin and his.
Under the escort of various gazes, Wu Bin and his companions arrived at the resettlement site. Considering that Wu Bin and his companions were together, they were arranged in a larger area. There were tents all around. The people around them also cast envious glances at Wu Bin and his companions.
"It's a bit dirty and messy here, you guys clean it up!" Zhu Zhenguo looked at the garbage on the ground. These were all thrown over by the neighbors. This cannot be enforced and can only rely on personal awareness. Obviously, everyone only cares about their own nest and doesn't care about the environment.
