The female detective took a long step and blocked the man's way. "Excuse me, sir, NYPD, we need to ask you a few questions about Dr. Valerie Monroe."

The man paused, glanced at the police badge Beckett displayed, and his face darkened slightly, "If you want to talk about Valerie, call my office."

After saying that, he stepped sideways between Beckett and Cassel and continued walking towards the restaurant.

"If you are unwilling to cooperate with us, then I will have no choice but to arrest you."

Beckett raised his voice slightly, but the other party showed no intention of turning back and instead reached a hand into his arms.

"Hey, if I were you, I would never do such a dangerous thing with my back to the police." Jack flashed from the side, put one hand on the man's arm and pinched his elbow with the other.

"FBI, identify yourself."

Although the man's action of reaching into his arms did not look like he was taking out a gun, Jack didn't mind teaching him a lesson. He exerted a little force with his fingers, and the man cried out in pain. The thing in his hand fell to the ground with a snap, and it turned out to be a black wallet.

Seeing that Jack had him under control, Cassel took two steps forward and picked up the wallet on the ground. He was surprised to find a blue badge with a gold background on it when he opened it.

"I'm Leonard Maloney, a special investigator from the State Attorney's Office. Let me go." The man struggled but failed to break free. He quickly stated his identity, and his attitude no longer had the arrogance he had before.

"what on earth is it?"

"We are investigating the murder of Dr. Monroe and hope you will cooperate." Jack let go of the man's arm, took the certificate from Cassel and handed it back to him.

Leonard Maloney rubbed his sore arm, a look of shock on his face. "What murder? Are you saying Valerie is dead?"

"What is her relationship with you?" Cassel asked.

"She works for me, undercover." The special investigator replied, causing the three to look at each other in surprise.

-

"This lunch is on my table. I'm sorry I hurt you just now." The three of them sat down in the restaurant, and Jack apologized to the special investigator named Leonard Maloney.

The latter gently rubbed the numb muscles on his arms with a lingering frightened expression, and still didn't understand how he was subdued by this move just now.

"Your arms are so strong that I almost thought this arm no longer belonged to me."

Although he complained like this, Leonard Maloney did not show much displeasure. At the moment, he was more concerned about the murder of Dr. Monroe.

"That's roughly what happened." Cassel briefly described the bizarre circumstances of how Dr. Monroe's body was discovered, and then sighed.

"A beautiful female doctor goes undercover to infiltrate a notorious drug lord. It's like something out of an Alfred Hitchcock movie."

"Drug lord?" Leonard Maloney looked at him as if to say, "What nonsense are you talking about?" and stopped cutting the steak.

"Caesar Calderon, isn't it? The subject of your investigation." Beckett was a little surprised why he had such an expression.

"Calderon?" Leonard Maloney almost laughed out loud. "Calderon is not someone I can investigate at my level, and I heard that he has been away from drug dealing for many years."

Who is he investigating? Jack asked the DEA. It has been almost 20 years since Calderon was released from prison. There are so many new drug lords of his level. It really doesn't make sense that he is still being targeted.

"It's the county hospital. The state auditor suspects them of misappropriation of funds, medical fraud, and equipment theft." The investigator's answer surprised the three.

Cassel's voice even changed. "Medical fraud?"

The reason for his excitement was obviously not because he was happy, but because he was too disappointed. The county hospital was just that small in size, and how could a mere medical fraud case be compared with a secret investigation into a drug lord.

However, Leonard Maloney obviously did not understand the great writer's disappointment and continued to explain, "Yes, we were unable to find any evidence, so we found Dr. Monroe and asked her to help as an insider."

It's not like they could kill people to silence them just because they're investigating a medical fraud case, right? The three of them looked at each other in bewilderment. Beckett concentrated and asked, "Did she find anything?"

"No." Although the steak in the restaurant tasted good, the investigator found it tasteless after hearing the bad news about Dr. Monroe. "But the day before yesterday, she suddenly called me and said she wanted to see me."

Finally, the connection was established. Beckett took out the surveillance photo from the file bag and showed it to him.

"Yes, I went to the hospital to see her." Leonard Maloney nodded to confirm that the person in the photo was himself, "She told me that she found something suspicious and that there might be a secret collusion of interests in the hospital.

But she wants to go north on the weekend to confirm the situation before making any indictments.”

"North?" Cassel's eyes lit up, and he turned to look at Jack and Beckett. "Remember the browsing history on Dr. Monroe's phone? She looked up hotels in Katonah, New York, and that town is in the north."

-

"But there is nothing in Katona." Back at the 12th Precinct, everyone looked at the map of New York State for a long time and fell into deep thought.

The town of Katonah is less than 60 kilometers north of New York, and the Westchester County it governs is one of the more affluent counties around New York.

However, the population of this town is not large. The rich people live in large villas in the surrounding countryside. Apart from an art gallery, the only thing left is the charming rural scenery that Kassel mentioned.

Jack poured himself a cup of coffee and found an empty desk to sit down. "There's also Bedford Hills there. I remember the last time I went there, a father who was eager to save his daughter kidnapped the daughter of a super-rich man.

He locked himself and the daughter of the rich man in an underground safe room that was harder to break into than a prison."

"Wait, prison?" Beckett stood up from his seat, walked quickly to the map, and pointed his finger at a certain place. "There is a women's prison next to Bedford Hills. Could it be related to that?"

When Cassel heard the word, he immediately perked up and raised his hand to sign up. "If you want to go to the women's prison, count me in!"

Beckett rolled his eyes in response. "That's totally unnecessary. I'm going to call the prison right now and ask them to send me the list of prisoners and the visitor records for the past six months."

Cassel immediately lost his spirits. “If it’s something like a review list, then I’ll withdraw first.”

Jack obviously didn't intend to let the great writer go, "Today is already Friday, and I only have a few days off, and Beckett can't take leave until the case is over.

Of course, if you're planning on giving up your trip to Las Vegas."

"I'll stay and help." Cassel sat back quickly.
