Hogwarts: Wizards of Eternity
#161 - Even if we are on different paths, we are still friends
Bathed in moonlight, Roger and Luna gazed at each other.
To Luna, Roger was an extraordinary and fascinating person, possessing knowledge that others lacked.
Yet, she always felt a great distance between them.
Even as he stood before her.
Perhaps, by following Roger's plans, she could grow closer to him.
But then...
Would she still be 'herself' at that point?
Luna held positive feelings for Roger, but their bond clearly hadn't reached a point where she was willing to distort herself to get closer.
Hence, Luna posed that question.
From Roger's perspective, Luna held a different significance.
The role he envisioned for her was as an assistant in his pursuit of the path to immortality.
If Luna was unwilling to take on this role, then Roger's response could only be: "I would be disappointed."
Despite saying so, Roger displayed no signs of disappointment. He reached out and grabbed a handful of air.
Turning the air into a book.
Smiling, he presented the book to Luna.
"I regret that we may be unable to travel together for some time, but I believe that no matter what path you choose now, we will eventually converge."
"What's this?" Luna asked, taking the heavy book with a blank cover, puzzled.
"Inside are the original manuscripts, predating my own revised version, as well as the version I refined with Headmaster Dumbledore," Roger replied.
In other words, the nearly two million-word notes that Roger initially spent hours handwriting while pondering and revising.
"I don't dislike people who insist on being themselves."
"I've always believed that only those with the strongest convictions can go further on the path of magic."
"No, not just the path of magic, but all paths in life require unwavering faith to lay the foundation for progress."
"So, I'm giving it to you."
As he spoke, Roger lightly tapped the notebook in the air, casting a spell similar to the Fidelius Charm, making the book visible only to Luna.
"This isn't the Three-Dimensional Method that leans more towards magical techniques, but the most primitive version, without much 'contamination' of my own, of the 'Three-Dimensional Theory'. It doesn't contain Dumbledore's influence."
"It doesn't even have as much of a materialist tendency in magic."
"It's not as powerful as the version of the Three-Dimensional Method that Dumbledore and I refined together, but it can be said to be a 'blank slate'."
"You can transform your thoughts into ink and paint on it to your heart's content."
Roger's initial plan was to gradually draw Luna into his circle and make her a link in his chain of plans.
But he didn't expect Luna to be so perceptive. He had barely started, and she already noticed.
Of course, Roger had dozens or even hundreds of ways to smooth things over and continue his seduction.
But Roger felt that was pointless, like parents saying 'I'll keep your New Year's money safe for you'.
Roger disdained such self-deceptive games.
So, he directly laid everything out.
Roger showed sincerity, and Luna reciprocated with sincerity.
Being rejected was within Roger's expectations, but Luna's counter-question gave Roger new ideas.
"I look forward to your future and hope that you will, as you said earlier, live an interesting life." Roger never stinted when it came to truly talented people.
Roger looked forward to her bringing a unique new possibility to the Three-Dimensional Method.
With Luna's precociousness, it was impossible for her not to understand the meaning of his invitation.
It was like a head of state inviting you to become a regional governor, but you flatly refused, saying you wanted to start your own business.
Since Luna was so determined to take another path, Roger's choice was naturally to bet!
The Three-Dimensional Method, developed in a more idealistic direction, was not without benefit to Roger's growth.
But this benefit might only be realized after a very long time, even hundreds or thousands of years.
It was an area that Roger would only begin to delve into deeply after he had grown to a terrifying level on the materialist path.
Therefore, Roger would not allow Luna and Dumbledore's paths to become the mainstream of the extraordinary system in the current world.
But Roger didn't mind cultivating some people who really had special talents in these areas as future reserve talents.
Just as Roger had said to Professor McGonagall at the beginning, 'Sow the seeds upstream in the timeline and harvest them downstream', this was what Roger had been doing all along.
True talents are never only used in one place. If she doesn't want to do this, Roger has other positions suitable for her!
"..." Luna held Roger's book, speechless for a long time.
"Alright, it's getting late. It'll be curfew soon. You should go back and rest early. Good night." Roger was planning to retreat, since he had discussed everything he needed to.
Although he hadn't gained an assistant this time, it wasn't a loss.
He just didn't know when this seed would grow vigorously until it bore full fruit.
It would probably be a long time.
"... Roger!"
Watching Roger's receding back, Luna called out to him.
Roger turned to look at Luna, who was quickly approaching him: "Hmm?"
"There is no diverging path."
Luna Lovegood's ethereal silver eyes seemed to have a slightly different color at this moment.
"My magic, your magic, Headmaster Dumbledore's magic, the professors' magic, everyone's magic, even every Muggle's technology, whether idealistic or materialistic, are just different appearances."
"Everyone in this world has never 'diverged'. Everyone has always been walking on the same path—'to become better!'"
"The only difference is everyone's understanding of 'better'."
"If I use your words—Roger, we have always been on the same path, even if our magic is different."
"I want to know what the Whispers really are. Are you willing to explore it with me?"
The smile Luna revealed was sincere and gentle.
To Luna, magic was just magic, a part of life, not everything.
Luna was unwilling to distort her will for the sake of magic.
Nor was she willing to drift apart from interesting people like Roger because of magic.
She still wanted to be friends with Roger.
"In a few days, I'll look for you during the weekend break." Roger didn't refuse.
Roger was also curious about this creature that only Luna could see among the people he knew, which also led to the birth of the Fear Demon.
However, his schedule for the next few days was really a bit tight.
Roger still had a lot of preparations to make, which he hadn't even started yet.
"This is what you call the 'Phase Membrane'?"
Nicolas Flamel frowned as he scanned his surroundings.
Even with his magical abilities, it was difficult to sense anything unusual.
"It's normal that you can't sense it. On one hand, human perception is limited, and on the other hand, I've cast spells to shield the senses."
As he spoke, Roger adjusted the size of the semi-finished Illusionary True World, or rather, the 'Phase Membrane'.
Because the inspiration came from the magic gods in 'A Certain Magical Index' used to manipulate everything in the universe.
So, Roger directly named it 'Phase Membrane'.
On the third day of the semester, Roger finally had time to get this thing going.
Roger had experimented that with his current strength, he couldn't expand it to the 'planet' level at all.
Even covering Britain was a bit of a stretch.
If he didn't want to affect his own actions and normal spellcasting, Roger could only expand it to around London.
That was enough.
When Roger's Phase Membrane was completely stable, he unfolded the virtual reality in the form of a projection, just like those experiments in the wand shop.
Afterward, the figure of wandmaker Ollivander appeared in the Room of Requirement in Hogwarts Castle. The Dreamshadow Ritual still required the caster to be asleep, which was sometimes a bit inconvenient, but virtual reality technology was different.
With the Phase Membrane as the carrier of signal transmission, both parties could achieve real-time communication.
Unfortunately, Roger still hadn't overcome the technical hurdle of simultaneously deploying projection and thought acceleration.
Otherwise, he might have been able to replicate the 'one day in heaven, one year on earth' stories in this magical world.
"This is..." Ollivander was not surprised by Roger's communication with him. This was something they had agreed upon in advance.
But he looked at the little boy beside Roger with a puzzled expression.
Roger should be at Hogwarts now, right?
The age of this child was obviously not yet at the stage where he could enter Hogwarts.
At this moment, Ollivander even thought of absurd things like 'alchemical homunculus'.
"Let me introduce you, this is Mr. Nicolas Flamel," Roger introduced.
"... Ah?" Ollivander glanced at the red-lipped, white-toothed child.
And looked at Roger again.
His face was full of "Are you kidding me?" expression.
"It's magic."
"Headmaster Dumbledore used the power of magic to turn Mr. Nicolas Flamel into this appearance." Roger didn't keep him in suspense but revealed the answer directly.
Since Nicolas Flamel had said he was willing to help him before, Roger's new wand development would naturally not miss this heavyweight master!
Although alchemy and wands were in different industries, they were not too far apart.
It was like civil engineering and materials science.
Although they are two different disciplines, there are many intersections between them.
Like Muggle technology, the various branches of magic used by wizards are also intricately connected.
Roger believed that with Nicolas Flamel's help, the development speed of his new wand would definitely increase, but would it interfere with other things Nicolas Flamel needed to do?
After reaching an agreement with him, Roger directly opened the highest speed of the virtual reality's thought acceleration to Nicolas Flamel!
Now his thinking speed is more than ten times faster than before!
This extra time is enough for him to handle various matters.
