American comics: Starting with Luke the Maker
#91 - War preparations
"Ultraviolet bullets and Wolfsbane potion. It seems you've prepared quite thoroughly." Nick Fury looked at the batch of weapons being handed over to the authorities at the Hebron Industrial Park, feeling somewhat impressed. He had kindly reminded Luke, but who knew this guy had already made preparations, and they were so thorough that even Nick was left speechless.
"Better safe than sorry, always plan ahead." Luke, standing beside Nick, watched the soldiers busily packing crates, and said in a light tone, "After all, you can rely on appropriations to eat, but I have to make money to support a whole bunch of people. I have to seize every opportunity I get."
"How much is the salary?" Nick snorted, but didn't poke any further at the loopholes in Luke's words. No need to ask about business matters; ninety percent of the time, it was definitely Miss Ina Sandra's doing. Although in Nick's mind, Luke was also a cunning little fox.
"This batch of weapons will also be provided to S.H.I.E.L.D. agents." Nick was still envious in the end. Although S.H.I.E.L.D. could replicate similar technology, why waste time replicating when there was a ready-made supply? It's not like the other party wasn't selling, right? In Nick's view, problems that could be solved with money were good problems. On the contrary, problems that couldn't be solved with money were the truly tricky ones.
"Of course, do you need a discount? Considering our friendly relationship, I can give you a 1% discount." Luke didn't mind. Anyway, he produced this batch of weapons for this great battle, and he didn't care whether he cleared them out to the authorities or to Nick's S.H.I.E.L.D.
"Ha." Nick was almost angered to laughter by Luke. A 1% discount? Why don't you raise the price instead?
But Nick couldn't say anything. After all, the relationship between the two was too complicated. He had also tricked Luke out of the symbiote he promised, although Luke eventually got one in the end. The relationship between the two now, under various cooperations, was definitely closely linked for the time being, but to say that they were intimate and harmonious would be a stretch.
"Equip my agents first, and the order payment will be sent to you later." Nick waved his hand, not wanting to say any more to Luke.
"Of course, I trust your reputation!" Luke finally said something heartwarming that made Nick's expression slightly soften, and then he felt like he had been happy too soon. "Ina has a whole set of methods for collecting debts, including but not limited to publishing notices in newspapers to demand payment from big shots like you, promoting the debt within your social circles, and having friendly discussions with your superiors."
"You have a big misunderstanding about me, little Luke!" Nick felt a bit helpless. You could not trust him in other aspects, because he himself couldn't guarantee his credibility in those areas. But on small matters like making payments, he considered himself to have a certain degree of credibility. It was just a matter of applying for an appropriation!
"What's the difference between Wolfsbane potion and Werewolf potion?" Nick changed the subject, as he didn't want to discuss anything related to business and money with Luke at the moment, even though they had been discussing these two issues enthusiastically and harmoniously for a long time before.
"A byproduct of Werewolf potion, a certain toxin extracted from werewolf saliva, can affect the constitution of vampires, making their bodies dull, sluggish, and weak, and also has a certain effect on hindering wound healing." Luke introduced, "This is a new product, a technology that Dr. Jansen just brought out of the lab."
"How is it used?" Nick directly asked the key question.
"Spray grenade." Luke led Nick forward, reaching into a still-unsealed crate to pick up a silver-white, palm-sized cylindrical grenade. "Open the safety and throw it out. It will automatically spray a fog layer with a diameter of about twenty meters, like a smoke grenade. The duration depends on the surrounding environment. If it's well-ventilated, it will disappear quickly. If it's a closed environment, it will last relatively longer."
"Facing a group of vampires, you only need to throw a Wolfsbane grenade into their midst, and then blindly cover them with whatever weapon you have. If you're using ultraviolet bullets, there might be nothing left but bones. If you're using ordinary gunpowder bullets, you might get a few unlucky guys who are weak and can only fall to the ground and groan."
"You remind me of something." After listening to Luke's explanation, Nick's heart stirred, and he thought of something. "That Dr. Curtis Connors, who turned into a lizard, seemed to want to spray his lizard potion towards the city with some kind of device a while ago. In his words, the fog layer diffused by the potion under the effect of that device was enough to cover most of the city! Most of the people in that area would be infected."
"You're asking me if replacing the lizard potion with Wolfsbane potion and using that device to launch and spray it could easily paralyze the gathered vampires without a fight, right?" Luke almost instantly understood Nick's meaning.
"Can it be done?" Nick asked seriously.
"Of course." Luke gave a very affirmative answer.
"Then..." A look of joy appeared on Nick's face.
"But the effect may not be satisfactory." Before Nick could speak again, Luke poured cold water on him, saying, "First of all, there's nothing wrong with Dr. Connors' plan, because his goal is to turn people into lizards. This plan can perfectly achieve his goal. But this doesn't necessarily apply to Wolfsbane potion. The vampires won't immediately become weak and at your mercy just because they breathe in the Wolfsbane potion mist. You have to prevent them from noticing something is wrong and causing a major riot in the entire city! You don't want to see those casualties. No one wants those crazy monsters to approach the core urban area.
"In addition, according to Dr. Jansen's report, Wolfsbane potion has a certain impact on humans and organisms, including but not limited to causing organisms to develop some kind of wolf-like change, become highly aggressive, and possibly experience sluggishness in body neurons. In severe cases, it may cause the organism's respiratory organs to be unable to breathe autonomously, leading to suffocation and death. Research shows that these reactions mostly exist for a certain period of time, and most will recover over time. But this doesn't mean that there won't be deaths due to some accidents during this period.
"As a human, you may be able to be in the Wolfsbane mist layer longer than a vampire, but the other party's vitality is strong enough to ensure that they survive the reaction period. You can't do it without any protection."
"Okay, it seems this time it's a confrontation between the werewolf forces and the vampire military factions." Nick nodded thoughtfully after hearing Luke's words. However, he didn't really completely abandon this plan, but instead used it as a last resort! If the battle was a major defeat, then no matter how unwilling he was, this plan could only be used.
Although Nick thought a major defeat was unlikely, it was good to prepare for the worst.
