Under the Red Dragon
#77 - Monsters of the Sea
The coastline of Golden Seaport Town stretches for about twenty li. The natural harbor has deep anchorage waters, with the shallowest points nearly fifteen meters deep and the deepest around forty meters.
As the town grew, the docks were expanded. Now, even multi-masted sailing ships built by the southern countries can easily dock at the harbor.
Currently, the harbor is filled with various multi-masted sailing ships, single-masted square-rigged ships, and even some galley ships. These vessels gently rock in the calm waters.
Golden Seaport Town under the night is still brightly lit, as if these adventurers possess inexhaustible energy.
Even after toiling in the endless forests and vast grasslands during the day, they still eagerly gather in taverns for lively discussions at night.
Many adventurers also take advantage of the night lights to sneak into the ladies' houses with lanterns hung high. Before long, the exquisitely renovated residences echo with soaring sounds, like a duet from a noble orchestra.
Mist gradually spreads from the depths of the sea, moving towards the coast under the blowing sea breeze, enveloping the ships docked in the harbor and parts of the town.
The sailors on watch aboard these ships are long accustomed to this scene and are not surprised.
A young sailor climbed out of his companion's bunk, shuffled into his shoes, and donned waterproof, warm clothing.
Enduring the foul odor permeating the ship's hold—a mixture of wood, garbage, food, and cargo soaked and rotting, combined with humidity, body odor, and mildew—he brightened the masthead lamp to prevent accidents.
Unbeknownst to him, in the increasingly dense fog, a hideous monster quietly emerged from the sea.
A pair of venomous, cruel eyes scanned the area in the mist, cautiously observing this town that seemed to have no night.
This monster's body, from head to toe, was about two to three meters long, with a slender build. Its dark green skin was covered in a grid-like pattern, with occasional patches of small scales appearing on some body parts.
Its head had prominent features, with developed jawbones and sharp teeth. Its limbs had webbed feet, and its head, neck, back, and forearms had sail-like vertical fins, and fish-like eyes.
The monster's tail had a pair of strong fin-like structures, and its sharp claws held a trident decorated with coral and seaweed.
This was a Sahuagin, known by coastal human residents as a sea devil. These monsters typically dwell in ocean caves or deep-sea trenches.
They enjoy hunting and attacking any creature they see. Although they sometimes trade, they prefer to plunder coastal settlements and merchant ships to obtain what they want. They are a highly predatory, fish-like intelligent race.
However, those who call themselves righteous and good, and never eat intelligent creatures, the bronze dragons, are very fond of the taste of these monsters and often eat them, so they do not recognize these Sahuagin as intelligent beings.
Unlike the blue dragons among the chromatic dragons, who not only recognize these Sahuagin as intelligent beings but also eat them even more readily than bronze dragons.
This Sahuagin was a member of a Sahuagin tribe living in a deep-sea trench far from this sea area. In the past, when these Sahuagin occasionally patrolled this sea area, they did not pay attention to this place because they knew it belonged to a tribe of ogres.
Those foolish ogres were poor but powerful, not worth the Sahuagin's attack and plunder. Moreover, there were few merchant ships coming and going in the past, which did not attract the Sahuagin's attention.
But this sea area seems to be getting more lively recently, with more and more humans and merchant ships passing by and docking here. This caught the attention of the monster who occasionally patrolled this sea area, so he began to lurk and investigate.
In the eyes of these Sahuagin, humans give them the impression of being extremely weak and easily bullied. So, after observing for a while, this Sahuagin sank into the sea and approached the sailor on the ship.
The young sailor was unaware of the danger approaching. After lighting the masthead lamp on the ship, he looked enviously at the lively town on the shore.
He muttered to himself, "Facing men's butts all day, I've almost forgotten the wonderful taste of those ladies, damn it."
Suddenly, he heard a violent sound of water breaking. He quickly turned his head to look at the source of the sound and vaguely saw a green monster leaping out of the water in the hazy mist, releasing a strong stream of water.
Before the sailor could shout, he was hit in the face by the powerful stream of water and felt a darkness before his eyes.
A sharp trident had pierced his body with great force, and the sailor fell weakly onto the deck.
Thump, the Sahuagin grabbed the ship's side and jumped onto the deck. Without lingering, he dragged the unconscious sailor and jumped back into the sea.
He planned to take this human to report to the Sahuagin nobles and priests who ruled the tribe, perhaps he would receive a generous reward.
…
"Get out of the way, get out of the way!"
The Sahuagin, possessing nearly several times the strength in the water compared to land, easily dragged the human corpse with one claw into the huge cave in the trench, while driving away the other Sahuagin who were approaching because they smelled the blood and meat.
When he entered this deep and vast cave, he did not look at the Sahuagin guards who were eyeing the human in his hand covetously, but directly bypassed these guards and walked towards the upper level of the cave.
The upper level of the cave had another wide space, which appeared somewhat pearly and precious under the reflection of various underwater coral gems.
The top and walls of the cave were painted with strange and hideous murals using special lipid fluids.
These murals mostly depicted ferocious sharks fighting various strange deep-sea monsters. This was the god worshipped by these Sahuagin - the shark god Sekolah.
Below these murals sat a tall, hideous, and ugly male Sahuagin. Several female Sahuagin surrounded this male Sahuagin, and they were working hard for the reproduction of the race.
This was the female priest in the Sahuagin and the Sahuagin Baron who ruled this tribe.
The patrolling Sahuagin did not dare to look too much. Although these female priests were the Baron's playthings in the Sahuagin tribe, they themselves had the power to guide the power of the shark god Sekolah, so they also had a huge influence and a very high position in the Sahuagin group.
"Lord Baron, I have discovered good news."
The patrolling Sahuagin threw the already pale and swollen human on the ground, knelt on the ground, and stared at the ground under his feet with his fish eyes, not daring to look up.
The Sahuagin Baron, who was lying on the female priest busy wriggling his ugly body, turned his head to look at the intruding patrolling Sahuagin. He showed his sharp teeth and smiled coldly: "This news better satisfy me!"
