#69 - Addicted to tower defense
The last wave of monsters arrives.
“New skill unlocked!
Rain of Fire:
Incinerate your enemies with fire raining from the sky!
It's best to save Rain of Fire for emergencies, or find the right moment to cast it. Seize the opportunity, as this skill has a long cooldown.”
Another skill icon also unlocked, a huge meteor with a fiery tail rushing towards the ground with immense force against a fiery red background.
The contrasting red and blue skills are very distinct, so there's no need to worry about accidentally clicking the wrong one.
Led by several orcs, goblins emerge from the spawn point in a continuous stream. The green monster horde forms a unified mass, surging towards the defense towers like a tsunami.
Wang Zi is dumbfounded: “How are there so many monsters! There must be dozens of them!”
He then realizes: “I must use the Rain of Fire skill well, hitting as many monsters as possible!”
Clicking the Rain of Fire skill, a continuously rotating circular area moves with the mouse, indicating the damage range of the fire rain.
Wang Zi nervously watches the leading orcs. When the orcs come into contact with the soldiers and the unhindered goblins begin to step forward, with the fire rain range encompassing the most enemies, he releases it!
“biu-biu-biu!”
Three meteors fall from the sky in succession. Instantly, these goblins and orcs fall in swathes, like harvested wheat!
Wang Zi can't help but exclaim excitedly: “It cleared them all at once! The power of this Rain of Fire is amazing!”
Only two goblins at the very front are not hit by the Rain of Fire and escape, but they are quickly finished off by the turrets set up behind.
With cheers and celebratory confetti falling, a sword and shield crossed appear in the middle of the screen, with the word “Victory!” prominently displayed above.
One star, two stars, three stars appear below the victory sign.
Wang Zi says triumphantly: “Haha, this veteran difficulty is nothing! I can perfectly clear it on the first try!”
Returning to the world map, the red flag with the crossed swords at the port has been replaced by a blue flag with a shield, with three stars on it, representing a three-star clear.
Not far away, beside a village with rising smoke, a new red flag is generated.
The hammer icon representing upgrades has a number “3” in the upper right corner, and a prompt also appears next to it.
“Purchase upgrades: Use the stars you've earned to strengthen your defense towers and other skills!”
Wang Zi browses for a moment and selects the upgrade corresponding to the turret.
Concentrated Fire: Increases the damage of the cannon [Cost: 1 star]
Rangefinder: Increases the attack range of the cannon [Cost: 1 star]
The next level of Battlefield Logistics can reduce the construction and upgrade costs of turrets, which Wang Zi is quite envious of, but this talent requires two stars to upgrade.
The last star can't be wasted, so he finally chooses the barracks-related upgrade “Resilience Training,” allowing the barracks to train soldiers with higher health.
After purchasing the upgrades, Wang Zi also curiously clicks on the Hall of Heroes.
The hero at the front is a knight holding a long sword and wearing a blue cloak, named “Sir Gerard the Light Seeker.”
“Guardian of justice, punisher of darkness, protector of the people, the mysterious Gerard, the valiant arm of Livinia!”
This is a beginner-friendly hero. Although his attack methods are average, he can inspire and heal nearby soldiers, making them more durable.
“But he requires the fourth level to unlock.”
He is also very interested in the Chinese heroes in the game trailer and searches for them in the Hall of Heroes. Soon, his eyes light up: “Shaolin Monk Shi Long, unlocked at the eighth level, skills include Arhat Fist, Dragon Claw Hand, Tendon-Changing Classic… This kind of tough guy is what a man should play!
Divine Thunder Master Ye Dao, skills include Bean Soldiering, Five Ghosts Transporting, Heavenly Thunder Spell… Has output, control, and healing, looks very powerful, but unfortunately, he requires the fifteenth level to unlock.”
Wang Zi can't wait to experience these heroes with different skills, so he directly enters the second level: Suburban Skirmish.
“Tier 2 towers available: You can upgrade your defense towers to tier 2!”
Wang Zi closes the prompt and, following the strategy he figured out in the last game, first builds a barracks and a turret to guard the intersection.
The level begins, and a powerful drumbeat opens the battle. The drumbeats, like a galloping horse, sound, and the clear chimes are penetrating, like an alarm from the mist. A long and wild wolf howl echoes through the forest, making Wang Zi shiver.
The first wave has groups of goblins attacking in batches.
The barracks and reinforcements barely block the ones in front, and the ones behind break through. Wang Zi frantically casts Rain of Fire to clear the field. After solving the ones that slipped through in front, new goblins rush forward one after another, breaking through the interception.
He decisively chooses to restart: “No, no, the timing of the skill just now was bad, only two goblins were killed. Let's try again.”
Although this is just a beginner level, it still has a certain degree of challenge on veteran difficulty.
One clever method is to wait until you have more stars, upgrade your talents to a certain level, and then go back to challenge the previous levels, which will be much easier.
However, these levels are designed with the player's talent level when challenging in mind.
As long as the defense system is arranged reasonably and the skill casting timing is appropriate, even on veteran difficulty, you can achieve a three-star clear all the way.
“Crap, these orcs are a bit strong, can't hold them!”
“How is this wolf running so fast! It's going to leak! Soldiers, stop it for me!”
The roar of the turrets, the clanging of swords wielded by soldiers, the tense drumbeats and wild wolf howls, constantly attacking the orcs in the front and the galloping dire wolves, the Rain of Fire occasionally falling from the sky…
In repeated attempts, Wang Zi finally masters the appropriate placement of defense towers and the timing of skill casting, and clears the level with three stars.
“Phew.” He breathes a sigh of relief, his eyes filled with excitement and a hint of relief, “Fortunately, that wave of monsters held out and I didn't use Rain of Fire, otherwise I definitely wouldn't have been able to beat so many orcs in the last wave. I'm so clever.”
He doesn't stop at all, upgrades his talents, and immediately starts the challenge of the next level.
This level has two spawn points. After experiencing the first failure, Wang Zi summarizes his experience: “Turrets placed in the front can only attack monsters on one side. If they are placed separately, the output won't be enough. They should be placed in the back, so that the turrets can attack together when the monsters converge.”
When designing the level, setting the construction locations of defense towers is also a technical skill.
First of all, key strategic points must be able to place defense towers, otherwise players will feel very uncomfortable, like breaking open a peanut shell and finding that there is no peanut inside.
While ensuring that players can clear the level, it is also necessary to consider ingenuity and aesthetics.
After Wang Zi thinks of a strategy, he starts a new challenge.
One wave was not defended well, and seven or eight small monsters slipped past.
He angrily slaps his thigh and chooses to restart: “Oh, I didn't grasp the timing of the skill just now.”
“Miscalculation, miscalculation, this barracks should be switched with the turret.”
“What is this thing? Orc Shaman, high magic resistance, and can heal allies? Haha, too bad I only have turrets!”
“Crap, how is this ogre so tanky, even Rain of Fire can't kill it!”
“Stop hitting, stop hitting, it hurts, it hurts, the soldiers in the back, hurry up and hold on!”
“Haha, finally passed! Next level, next level!”
Wang Zi is completely immersed in the game.
