#46 - The light that stretches from the past to the future

Two transparent figures appeared out of nowhere at the joyous country carnival, looking around and quickly assessing their surroundings.

"A carnival, right?" Dr. Rosalene asked.

"Should we go have a look around together?" Dr. Watts replied.

Bickering playfully, the two strolled through the carnival. From stalls selling beautiful fruits to game booths where you could win prizes by whacking moles, fortune-telling tents, carousels, and swings...

As they walked to the edge of the carnival, the festive background music and the cheerful noise of the crowd gradually faded until they could barely hear them. Finally, they spotted young Johnny.

He stepped over a small stream from a log, following a path into the lush, wildflower-filled wilderness.

The light chirping of crickets filled the air as Johnny walked through the wilderness. Instead of continuing along the path, he hopped over a narrow part of the stream and entered a wide, grassy field.

The deep night sky, layered with many shades of blue, was adorned with stars that twinkled like summer fireflies. Johnny looked up at the starry sky and exclaimed, "Wow!"

Echoing the clear chirping of crickets, the beautiful, clear sound of a piano like a spring flowing over rocks began to play. The camera slowly panned upwards, revealing two white-bellied, blue-feathered birds perched on a tree. They flapped their wings and flew to another tree with a "flutter, flutter" sound.

Johnny watched the direction the two birds flew and discovered a perfect spot for stargazing—a thick tree trunk lying in the grass, comfortable to sit on, with several beautiful, pure white little flowers nearby.

Johnny pushed off with his feet and sat on the tree trunk. In his view, the sky seemed to hang a hazy silver river, with the sparkling stars as grains of sand on the riverbed, reflecting tiny, beautiful, gem-like light, glittering and mesmerizing.

"Such beautiful music..." Lin Fan couldn't help but exclaim, not for the first time.

The beautiful scenery of nature, combined with the atmosphere created by the beautiful music, brought a multiplied touch to the heart.

Dr. Watts sighed, "When I was a kid, my grandfather used to take me to see the stars every year."

Just then, some movement came from behind the obscured trees, and the background music changed, a pure piano sound like a first encounter. Both doctors and Johnny looked back. As the camera slowly panned down, the figure of a little girl walking in the wilderness appeared.

Looking at the little girl's familiar figure, Lin Fan was shocked: "River! How is that possible? Didn't Johnny meet River at school? ... Right, Johnny's childhood memories were blocked! So this is their first meeting?"

Johnny jumped off the log, seemingly surprised to encounter a girl of his age in the remote wilderness. "Hello!"

The little girl heard the greeting, and an exclamation mark appeared above her head. She looked around like a startled deer, then turned and ran.

Johnny hurriedly chased after her, shouting as he ran, "Wait, don't go!"

The melody of the background music didn't change, the pure piano sound naturally transitioned into a light and comforting acoustic guitar sound. Johnny stopped, panting, keeping a distance from River. "I'm Johnny... What's your name?"

River turned her head, facing away from him: "...You're in my spot."

"Your spot?" A question mark appeared above Johnny's head. Then he understood and quickly explained, "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to hog it!"

He then asked, "Um, would you like to sit with me?"

River: "...Are you here to see the stars?"

Johnny asked happily, "You too?"

River turned around for the first time, facing Johnny. The strings of the acoustic guitar gently strummed, and the screen gradually turned white...

The scene changed, Johnny and River were sitting side by side on the log. A melodious violin became the main tone. The camera slowly rose, and as the picture darkened again, the screen was no longer a bird's-eye view and pixelated figures, but...

Lush green grass, a log lying on the ground, Johnny with brown hair holding the log with both hands, and River's back, pressing her light blue skirt inwards with both hands, like a deep night sky mixed with various blue pigments of different shades, with sparkling stars.

"This..." Lin Fan was surprised and unconsciously felt warm and touched. "The picture quality suddenly became high-definition! This view from behind Johnny and River, looking up at the sky, is beautiful."

"You know? There are countless lights in the sky."

"Yeah."

Above the two people's heads, the dialogue appeared on the left and right, like a Feixun chat, although the names were not marked, it was easy to distinguish who was speaking.

"Don't you like crowded places? ... I don't either."

...

"You still haven't told me your name."

"I won't tell you. ... People at school make fun of me because of it."

...

"I don't mind. Even if it's just once, I want to have a name like everyone else. Like the stars in the sky... They all look the same from here, but that doesn't diminish their beauty."

When River said this, the camera zoomed up a little more, revealing the bottom of a round moon.

"I think so too. So, what do you think these stars are?"

"My dad says they're giant balls burning gas inside them."

"I bet he's making that up. You know, adults like to make things up. Like Santa Claus, kangaroos, the Easter Bunny..."

Johnny's childish and innocent complaints about adults made Lin Fan laugh.

River asked, "Have you ever tried using stars to make an Easter Bunny?"

"Like finding constellations in the sky?"

"Yeah."

"I've tried others... but I haven't tried a bunny."

"Want to try?"

"Yeah, we can definitely find the best bunny constellation! Let's see who finds it first!"

The camera zoomed up again, the bright moon revealing its full appearance, staying in the center of the screen, with only the upper bodies of Johnny and River remaining at the bottom of the screen.

"Three, two, one, start!"

River said almost immediately, "I found it!"

"Uh, where is it?"

"In the sky."

"But where in the sky?"

"Think big. Bigger than everything else."

Johnny was a little confused: "I can't find it... Wait! I see it!"

"Tell me what you see?"

Johnny excitedly reached out and pointed in the direction of the moon: "There, right! Those are two ears and a head!"

"What else?"

"And there! There are two feet."

"Exactly! What else?"

"And... and the moon! The moon is its round belly."

With the moon pointed to by Johnny's finger as the origin, a white light lit up, faintly revealing the lines between the stars outlining the image of a rabbit. The melodious violin melody began to fall after reaching its highest point, the white mist dissipated, and the picture returned to a bird's-eye view.

The light in Lin Fan's eyes was bright and excited. The long-standing puzzle that had been bothering him was finally revealed, and he felt a tingling sensation all over his body: "So that's what the blue and yellow paper rabbit means..."
