#206 - Hotly discussed by players!
Aside from the incredibly difficult Genocide Route boss fight, a playthrough of *Undertale* can generally be completed in a day.
Initially, players thought it was just a typical RPG, but as they delved deeper, they were pleasantly (and shockingly) surprised by the game's unique aspects.
They couldn't hide their shock and excitement, discussing it on game forums, in comment sections, and in game groups!
A certain game group:
"Holy crap, have you guys played *Undertale* yettttttttt?"
"Is it that big of a deal? Why are you so excited that you can't even speak properly?"
"I was just about to recommend it! This game is unbelievably awesome and powerful!"
"I know about it, but I didn't buy it because it's a pixel game."
"Is the game you're talking about fun?"
"It's not just a matter of being fun or not; it's truly something special... The graphics are rough, yet detailed, and the music is outstanding, with almost every scene having its own corresponding BGM. Most importantly, you can actually befriend monsters in this game! Isn't that mind-blowing?"
"Whoa! Is that even possible?"
"And while playing, you occasionally get the illusion that the characters aren't talking to the in-game characters, but to you, the person outside the screen. They either advise or mock you, as if the characters know it's a game world, which is incredibly impactful."
"That sounds interesting! I'll download it and give it a try!"
"By the way, be kind!"
"Huh? What do you mean? Do I seem like an unkind person?"
"I won't say much more; I've already given away a lot! You have to experience it yourself to understand the feeling!"
"Tch, so secretive. Now I'm really curious. I'll go download it and play!"
...
The *Undertale* game review section is also incredibly lively!
"I hadn't played the game for long when Flowey scared the crap out of me!"
"Holy crap, scared by Flowey +1!"
"Who would have thought that a sunny, harmless little flower would suddenly turn hostile and reveal such a terrifying and hideous appearance."
"Want to gain LOVE? Here, take my friendship pellets!"
"Flowey is the ultimate face-changer, switching expressions faster than flipping a book. His later forms are even more mentally disturbing."
"Flowey's classic line: 'In this world, it's kill or BE killed.' I think it's pretty cool."
"I'm ashamed to admit that because of Flowey's line, even after Toriel saved me, I remained wary, suspecting she was also a seemingly kind monster who was only saving me to lower my guard and then do something to me.
On the way home with Toriel, I was extremely cautious, afraid that the marked mechanisms were incorrect. When I saw the kitchen, I immediately thought she would turn me into some kind of meat bun while I was sleeping. Seeing her evasiveness, not wanting me to know what was in the underground passage, I also suspected there was some kind of conspiracy inside. It wasn't until I woke up and found a butterscotch pie in front of my bed that I realized Toriel was genuinely good to me."
"Indeed, my favorite character is Toriel. On the way home with her, a Froggit pulled me into a battle, and while I was caught off guard, Toriel suddenly burst into the battle from the edge of the screen, glaring at the Froggit, scaring it into running away on its own. I thought Froggit was so cute at the time, and Toriel was protecting me like she loved her own child."
"Speaking of Toriel, isn't her name Toriel? It seems like everyone automatically calls her Goat Mom. It feels so harmonious."
"Hahahaha, now that you mention it, it's really strange."
"I think it's because Goat Mom's appearance and her actions give off a warm, maternal feeling that perfectly matches the image of a mother.
I even think she has more of a motherly aura than my own mom. Occasionally when I go home for vacation, my mom nags at me all day, complaining that I wake up late and don't like to clean the house. She's also often lazy when it comes to cooking, and forget about making pastries or pizzas."
"2333333, that's a real mom."
"Goat Mom gave me a room of my own, telling me that this is home now. She would quietly turn off the lights when I was sleeping and leave butterscotch pie in front of my bed; she likes to read books leaning against the sofa by the fireplace; she wants to take me to her favorite bug-catching spot; she says she's happy to have my company."
"呜呜呜, I feel like the person I owe the most is Goat Mom. She was so good to me, and I killed her."
"I also accidentally killed Goat Mom. I originally thought I would use the battle to make her understand my determination to leave, but when her health dropped to half, I instantly killed her with one hit. Seeing Goat Mom fall to the ground, looking so painful and sad, while tearfully saying 'Be good, my child,' it really made me feel terrible. Goat Mom clearly loved me so much, and even when my health was almost at the bottom, she couldn't bear to attack."
"I strongly suspect this is Wang Jian's malice. Like in *Pokémon*, capturing Pokémon requires getting them to low health, and many games have similar settings. Choosing 'Mercy' a few times doesn't seem to change anything, so you might assume the way to pass is to attack Goat Mom, then choose 'Spare' when her health is low.
It makes people used to dealing a little damage, and then instantly kills her when she's below half health, which is just a坑爹 (pit-father, meaning ridiculous). I think most players, when playing for the first time without knowing the strategy, will fall into this trap."
"What's even more hateful is that it doesn't even give you a chance to regret. After accidentally killing Goat Mom, I felt so guilty and remorseful that I immediately chose to reload the save. This time, I continuously spared Goat Mom with 'Mercy', making her soften and let me leave, and I finally breathed a sigh of relief.
But as soon as I went out, I ran into Flowey, who mockingly exposed that I had killed Goat Mom. I was shocked and devastated at the time."
"I used to think that games were just games, and no matter how cruel I was or how many ruthless killings I committed in the game, it didn't matter. At worst, I could just reload the save and go back to being a good person. But *Undertale* gave me a resounding slap in the face, telling me that once you do something bad, it can never be undone, and it will remind you of your past mistakes in ways you can't imagine."
"Uh, actually, there's still one way: delete the save file and clean the registry. I tried it, and it works."
"...You bastard, get lost! You deserve to be single forever!"
"??? How did you know I don't have a girlfriend?"
"Before the end of the first playthrough, Sans told me that EXP doesn't stand for Experience Points, but Execution Points, and LV doesn't stand for Level, but Level of Violence. Every point of EXP, every LV increase, every increase in strength, comes at the cost of a monster's life, obtained through their pain and the sorrow of their family and friends.
You slaughter the so-called monsters, but in the eyes of the monsters, you are the real monster, a monster who enjoys killing."
"I have to say, when I saw Sans's new explanation of EXP and LV, I was very fortunate that I had been merciful to most of the monsters I encountered along the way, only killing a few monsters that I didn't know how to deal with, and Sans finally forgave me.
However, there are still some regrets that I wasn't able to be completely merciful. I'm going to do a second playthrough to see what the Pacifist Route ending is like."
