The Witcher: Elemental Lords
#43 - Poisoning
Hago swallowed, staring at Dole with a terrifyingly gloomy expression. Seeing these wounds, he knew the kind of suffering Dole had endured at the police station.
He really wanted to ask how he had escaped, but found himself unable to speak. This child truly had a hard life!
He thought for a moment and said, "In that case, I won't ask. The fact that you came to me is giving Hago face. Leave the job search to me." He paced around, saying, "Besides Old Ke's blacksmith shop, I also manage two other blacksmith shops. One is at the intersection; you should have seen it, Mondo Blacksmith Shop."
"Do you want revenge?" Hago asked casually.
Dole looked directly at Hago, the usual cheerful expression gone from his face. He simply nodded silently, not answering the question, and then said, "I'll come find you in a few days. I just wanted to give you a heads-up."
Hago nodded. He was already satisfied that Dole had come to him. The kid still had good character. Now that he had finally found him, it was enough as long as he was okay. The worry he had for so long could finally be put to rest.
"Alright, then be careful. Come find me anytime if you need anything." After saying this, Hago realized he had said something wrong. Dole could escape from the police station; what could he possibly help with?
He felt a bit self-deprecating.
Dole nodded and said, "Then thank you, Hago. About today's matter?"
"You know, I know."
Dole bowed to Hago, turned around with Baer, and left.
Dis, Carmen, Feller, the Oddo father and son—all five of them had to die. Dole had endured hours of beatings. If it weren't for Baer, he would have certainly died without a burial place, perhaps thrown into some stinky ditch, maybe without anyone even knowing. Such a suffocating death filled Dole's heart with anger and endless resentment. He would not be human if he didn't avenge this.
Between life and death, there is great terror, but also great resolve. After experiencing this, Dole's personality gradually became cold and indifferent.
Dole didn't go back. Instead, he timed it just right and found a place to eat near the city gate, casually watching the entrance while he ate.
Whether it was Oddo or Sam, they would return from the Bianchi mine every day. Sam returned a bit earlier, Oddo a bit later because he liked to play. This was their usual routine. Dole needed to track them and get their home addresses.
He had been waiting for this day for a long time, almost four months. Now that everything was ready, all that remained was to kill.
Before long, Sam and Oddo walked in from outside at the same time. The father and son, one in front of the other, along with several other people, rode in a Bianchi mine carriage, slowly entering the city. They were talking and laughing, a stark contrast to Dole's gloomy expression.
Dole ate the remaining rice, slowly wiped his mouth, and then paid the bill.
Four copper coins—quite cheap.
The carriage was slow, and he casually followed behind. Soon, they arrived in the eastern district of Domon City.
The southern and southwestern areas of Domon City were slums, the southeastern area was ordinary residences, the city lord's mansion and office were in the center, the northwestern area was the noble district, and the northeastern area was the wealthy district, each categorized separately.
The main commercial streets were near the south gate, extending to the city center. There were only three streets in total, the Domon Avenue in the middle, and the Link Avenue and Olai Avenue on the east and west, each controlled by different forces.
Domon Avenue led directly to the city lord's mansion, while Link Avenue and Olai Avenue were slightly longer, extending to the city walls in the north.
There were many people in the city, and the carriage was slow, but Oddo and his son quickly got off. They hailed another carriage and headed towards the southeast of the city.
Dole quietly followed behind.
Actually, if he could wait a little longer, until he advanced to the high-level realm, it would be much easier. He could directly use magic potions for marking and sense them directly, without having to painstakingly track them. But he couldn't wait until then.
The eastern district was large, full of ordinary residences. The carriage quickly turned into a slightly northern alley, and they soon stopped in front of a large household.
Dole carefully followed behind, watching from a distance.
After the two walked inside, he pretended to wander around aimlessly, looking around the neighborhood.
Naluye's first rule: always pay attention to safety.
To kill someone, you must clearly investigate their location, the surrounding traffic, the possible directions of enemies, and arrange escape routes as much as possible.
However, Dole knew that almost half a year had passed, and Oddo and his son should be letting their guard down.
To avoid attracting attention, Dole didn't stay long. He decided to come again tomorrow.
Anyway, he had already waited half a year; a few more days wouldn't matter.
Although he had been waiting for this day for a long time.
…
It took Dole several days to investigate Sam's family situation.
There were five people in Sam's family: Sam himself, Sam's son Oddo, Sam's wife (a very shrewish woman), and two slaves without commoner status.
The slaves were bought from the market, costing Sam only 50 silver coins. Human lives were frighteningly cheap.
Oddo also had an older brother who was a soldier and not at home.
Dole didn't think too much. He didn't care what they were; he would kill these two dogs first. If his eldest son wanted to avenge his father and brother, he wouldn't mind killing another one.
After confirming this information, Dole investigated Sam's two neighbors.
Coincidentally, one of the neighbors was away, giving Dole a lot of room to maneuver.
Sam's two slaves would go to the vegetable market together every morning, and at this time, Sam and Oddo would leave, leaving only Sam's shrewish wife at home.
This was almost every day.
The structure of his house was also very simple, with four large rooms, a living room, a small courtyard, and a toilet in the small courtyard. Behind the house was a warehouse for storing daily necessities.
After determining all of this, Dole prepared to act.
On the first day of July, just as dawn broke, Sam and Oddo walked out of the house together. A carriage naturally arrived at the door to take them to the main street, where they would transfer to the Bianchi mine's dedicated vehicle—a right of being a supervisor.
At this time, the two slaves also left together to buy vegetables.
Everything was according to plan.
After seeing all of this from the wall, Dole quietly climbed over the wall to the bottom of Oddo's courtyard wall. He glanced at the distant living room. At this time, Sam's wife, a seemingly plump woman, was lazily sitting at the entrance of the living room, preparing to enjoy the morning sun.
Even in July, the mountain city of Domon still didn't have much heat; it was still a bit cold in the morning.
Dole quietly crouched through the courtyard and turned to the kitchen. He looked at the layout of the kitchen and didn't act rashly. Then he turned to the warehouse in the back.
Next to the warehouse was a corner of the wall covered with a tarpaulin. There was a lot of dust on it, indicating that it wasn't often moved.
He quietly came here, lifted the tarpaulin, and crawled inside. He needed to wait here until night.
Almost no one came here under the tarpaulin; even footsteps passing by were rare. This had all been scouted beforehand. He stayed there for a whole day.
Time quickly came to night, and Oddo and Sam returned together.
According to the previous timing, Dole had already run to the back of the kitchen, secretly watching this side. At this time, the two slaves had already prepared the food. The dishes were rich, with as many as seven or eight, and they needed to be carried out of the kitchen one by one to the living room, which would take some time.
The two slaves quickly carried the dishes out of the kitchen, and at this moment, taking advantage of their simultaneous departure, Dole, who had been observing for a long time, quietly slipped into the back of the kitchen, felt around, and took out two small bottles. He uncorked the bottles and poured all the transparent liquid inside into several dishes.
