The Witcher: Elemental Lords

#14 - Basic Light and Heavy Hammer Method

Today was truly stimulating. So many things happened during the day, and then I was chased by Odo when I got back in the evening. Dorle felt like one thing was coming after another recently, and the pace of life was a bit chaotic. This wasn't a good sign, and he had to become an apprentice as soon as possible and learn to make simple tools. That way, he'd have money, and he could buy a house in the commoner district. With patrol squads in the commoner district, Odo wouldn't dare be so presumptuous.

Thinking of this, Dorle felt that his future would definitely be bright, even better than when his parents were around.

But the future is the future, and he had to do the things in front of him well.

The new place didn't have a bed, only a hard bed board. Dorle didn't have any candles either, so even with the dictionary, he couldn't read. Alas, how sad. In the middle of the afternoon, Dorle couldn't find any place to warm up, so he could only call Dog Odo over, preparing to hug it for the night. I must say, Dog Odo was quite warm.

Dog Odo felt utterly hopeless all night. 'Damn it, I'm a hellhound, a seventh-level creature, not your pillow!' Dog Odo roared in his heart.

Awoo...

The night passed. Although he hugged Dog Odo, his back was still against the wall, so it was a bit cold. Therefore, when he woke up, he felt stiff all over. Seeing the sky slightly bright, Dorle struggled to get up and said to Dog Odo, "Forget it, let's both go to the smithy today. If you're good, nothing will happen."

Dog Odo took a step back, indicating that he wasn't going, and then lay on the ground, lazily placing his head on his paws.

With such a human-like expression, Dorle knew that this was a protest!

Could this guy really understand what I'm saying? He was a little doubtful, but this guy was indeed very intelligent. Oh well, if he doesn't want to go, he doesn't want to go.

Dorle prepared a little and quietly left the new house with the book. Although he knew that Odo's people were unlikely to be outside, it's always better to be safe than sorry.

A new day had begun.

Today, Verick also came early. He just didn't look too good, but he could still work. Seeing Dorle arrive, the corners of his mouth twitched, revealing his signature honest smile.

He knew that Dorle's status was different now, so he didn't order Dorle around. But seeing Dorle still neatly tidying up and lighting the fire, he nodded in his heart. Children from the slums mature early and are also very diligent, which he liked very much.

As an apprentice, Dorle's tasks were different from before, and he had much more freedom. He could observe the blacksmiths' methods of making ironware, and he could freely choose which master to follow. He chose Verick.

Now he wasn't Verick's helper, but Verick's assistant, a disciple. Verick also had a good impression of Dorle and didn't refuse.

At the outermost part of the smithy's stall, on the left were various tools for life, such as kitchen knives and hoes. A young man named Lin Rui was specially watching over them, and he would go out to introduce them to customers. On the right were various weapons, mostly swords, including greatswords for combat, rapiers for duelists among warrior professions, broadswords for horseback riding, as well as spears, shields, and other weapons.

In Domon City, the least lacking thing might be all kinds of weapons. Of course, most of these weapons were not for domestic sale. Many merchant groups would come to collect them every year and then sell them to other places. Therefore, most of the time, blacksmiths would accumulate various weapons and then store them up to sell when the merchant groups came.

The folk customs of this world were fierce, and ordinary children were required to practice basic martial arts, so ordinary people sometimes carried weapons, so the sales of weapons were much higher than the sales of ordinary tools.

Dorle was now an apprentice, and when the tasks weren't too tight, he could follow Verick to learn how to make some small things, such as kitchen knives, or slightly more difficult scissors, as well as hoes, sickles, and ordinary wood-chopping axes.

The first thing he learned was the kitchen knife.

Don't think that a kitchen knife is easy to make, it's actually not easy at all. Although there was a mold, Dorle completely messed it up the first time he tried. He used a small hammer, but even so, he hammered the newly made mold into two halves in just a few strokes.

At this time, Verick began to laugh at him and then taught him many small tricks.

Blacksmiths also have martial arts skills, and hammering is one of them. Dorle was very surprised when he heard this, that a blacksmith actually had to learn martial arts. But then, he saw Verick's hammer skills, which had some shadow of hammer techniques, and he believed it.

No wonder no one dared to cause trouble at the smithy. These blacksmiths looked honest, but they were not easy to mess with.

At noon, after resting, Verick called Dorle to the iron felt and said, "You are an apprentice that Hago specifically asked for, so I won't hide anything from you here. Our smithy has a total of three hammering techniques, two basic hammering techniques, and one low-level hammering technique. These are all what you will learn in the future. The basic hammering techniques are very simple. I usually use them a lot when forging weapons. You must have observed them carefully, so I won't say much here. Watch carefully, I'll demonstrate it now."

He picked up a small hammer, randomly clamped a discarded sword blank, and started hammering on it. His movements were very interesting, gently jumping up, feet not leaving the ground, and then the hammer fell heavily, but the force falling on the sword blank was not very great. After doing this three times, he changed his movement, still gently jumping up, feet not leaving the ground, the waist sinking down, the shoulders rounding, using the lever arm to the extreme, and then bending his elbow, heavily smashing down with the hammer, the sword blank shook heavily. After doing this three times, he changed his movement again, but it was generally the same, only the lightness and heaviness changed. The last change was light tapping, but the movements were very fast, quickly tapping on the sword blank like pearls falling on a jade plate, clanging, but very rhythmic.

After a total of seven movements, Verick stopped and asked Dorle, "Do you understand?"

Dorle was a little dazed. He scratched his head and said, "I've memorized it."

Verick chuckled and said, "This is called the Light and Heavy Basic Hammering Technique, with a total of seven changes. You've also seen that there's nothing special about it, it's just for forging, not for hitting people. You try it out more. Usually, pay more attention to how I do it, and also weigh the tool blank more, feel the changes in the center, and make the thickness uniform, so that you can create good things. Try it out more, I estimate it will take you at least a month to forge an ordinary kitchen knife."

Dorle suddenly felt a little discouraged. It would take a month to forge a kitchen knife, so when would he become a real blacksmith?

But he also knew that blacksmithing was not so easy to become. Just the fact that Verick was almost thirty years old and only a second-level blacksmith showed that.

"I will work hard." He cheered himself up, and then carefully recalled Verick's movements, feeling a little hesitant in his heart. These movements didn't seem very difficult, but mastering them wouldn't be easy, after all, forging weapons required tempering, and there couldn't be any carelessness. If the force was wrong after a few hammer strikes, the tool blank would be directly scrapped. If he wanted to make a living from this, he had to work hard to figure out these things. Dorle was clear about this, so he would work honestly. It was good enough to be able to eat his fill now, so why be picky.

Verick smiled when he saw Dorle's expression.

At this moment, Hago walked over from the side, bringing a person with him, and said to Verick, "Verick, business is here. This customer wants to forge a sword. Do what he asks for! I'm leaving the person to you."

Verick shouted loudly, "Okay!" agreeing to the matter, and then began to observe the person who had come.
