The Void Pathfinder from the Demon Hunter World

Chapter 49 Tactical Nuclear Bombs and Off-Road Vehicles

The three nuclear silos in Appalachia are all built in rugged mountainous areas and are very hidden.

The first one is located in the middle of Savage Ridge, near the National Radio Array and Sugar Grove, and the entrance is disguised as a hunter's cabin. Inside the cabin is an elevator that goes directly to the depths of the underground, and there is a pool of water next to the cabin.

The second one is located on the northern mountain range of Savage Ridge, with a crater to the northwest, and Suntop Ski Resort and Pumpkin House to the east. The entrance is disguised as a simple toilet at the campsite.

The third one is located next to a train station in the southernmost part of Savage Ridge, and the entrance is in the repair station next to the train station.

Marvin spent half a day going around each entrance.

In fact, no one has been to these three nuclear silos yet, and the shelter boys are still busy cleaning up monsters in the cranberry swamp with the Brotherhood.

But he didn't know, for safety reasons, he still chose the second entrance farthest from White Spring.

The campsite was built on a flat land in the mountains, surrounded by half-man-high iron railings. There were rusted barbecue grills and several abandoned cars in the camp. There was a row of three small iron cubicles painted green on the rocks near the edge of the camp. This was the simple toilet.

Marvin opened the toilet door on the far right, ignored the unpleasant smell inside, pulled open the roof, and revealed the numeric keypad.

After entering the 11-digit password, the wall behind the toilet moved away, revealing the elevator.

He stepped over the toilet and bent down to get into the elevator. After going down for half a minute, the elevator stopped.

Outside the elevator was a standard military underground bunker. The all-metal room had two doors leading to other places, with desks and complex control terminals.

He could not go any further for the time being.

According to the information obtained from Baiquan, whoever went in would be indiscriminately attacked by the robots and hidden turrets inside without the company of a nuclear bomb safety officer.

Although Marvin was not afraid, there was no need to fight hard.

After releasing Modus, Raven jumped onto the control terminal consciously. A finger of his right claw deformed and inserted into the terminal's slot, with blue light flashing in his little eyes.

"No problem. Although it is for military use, the algorithm is still the same as the Enclave's. Give me ten minutes."

Marvin nodded and leaned against the wall to wait slowly.

While Raven was attacking the firewall, he still had the energy to chat: "Marvin, tell me about your world. What is it like? I have only seen some pre-war pictures, and I don't know what the world without nuclear war looks like."

Compared with the Boston wasteland in Marvin's memory, the natural environment of Appalachia is already very good, but it is also a wasteland. Whether it is the ash heap, the poisonous valley, or the quagmire area, the environment is very bad.

"Not very good..." Marvin's eyes were dull. He was not thinking about the world of the demon hunter, but his hometown a long time ago, that peaceful Eastern country.

He calmly described the scenery he had seen in this life, the beautiful Vizima Plain, the smelly Lower Town, the damp and cold Velen, the lively but full of liars and thieves Novigrad, the fairy-tale kingdom of Toussaint, the cold and majestic Dragon Mountains...

"Wow, wow..." The raven was a little excited and almost lost the line. It readjusted its position and said, "According to you, can I go there too?"

"Sure." Marvin replied, "I still have enemies to deal with there, so of course I have to go back..."

Marvin never told Modus about the learning machine, and every time the raven wanted to ask, it would lose its voice for no reason, as if it was a silent warning to it.

After a few times, this topic became a taboo.

The man and the bird chatted casually for more than ten minutes.

"Okay, I have obtained the highest operating authority here." Raven looked up and asked, "What are you going to do?"

"Can the toilet entrance outside be closed?"

"Yes...it's already closed."

"Close the elevator too."

"No problem, then what?"

"Of course, make a nuclear bomb." Marvin asked, "What suggestions do you have?"

"This...come and see, look at the screen. There are two types of nuclear bombs here..."

The screen refreshed, and Modus continued, "This is in the launch silo, 24 meters long and more than 4 meters thick. Even if it is disassembled, only the nuclear warhead is counted, and I guess you can't take it away." Note ①

The screen refreshed again.

"This is a tactical nuclear bomb in the warehouse. This one is much smaller. The missile is 8.2 meters long and the warhead is less than 100 kilograms. It's okay for you to take it away, and you can even take a few more."

Marvin looked at the pages of data on the screen.

The small nuclear bomb in the warehouse has an equivalent of 50,000 tons, which means the explosion power is equivalent to 50,000 tons of TNT. The explosion radius is 1.5 kilometers, and the explosion impact range is about 10 to 15 kilometers.

The power is quite suitable, so let's take this one.

In this standard nuclear facility, Marvin now has the highest access rights, and any equipment is open to him.

According to Modus's instructions, he walked through the game room, the restaurant, the barracks, the medical room... turned a corner, went down the stairs, and turned another corner...

After walking around for more than 20 minutes, he finally entered the missile warehouse. Rows of small missiles were neatly placed on special shelves, which was quite exciting.

Nuclear bombs are not like conventional explosives. They are actually very stable before detonation, so Marvin is not afraid.

But he was a little scratching his head at this time, and he didn't know how to dismantle it.

"Wait a minute, I found a helper." Modus jumped off his shoulder and landed on the missile and said.

Later, 6 thugs originally used for defense floated into the warehouse and began to dismantle it.

Marvin made way and asked the raven who jumped onto his shoulder again, "Are you sure you can do it?"

"Of course, there is no need to develop a nuclear bomb, just dismantle it, it's easy."

"Then how do I detonate it?"

"This... let me think..." The raven did not move, and after a few seconds asked again: "How do you plan to detonate it? Remote control or timing? Without high-power radio, remote control is very dangerous."

Marvin looked at the busy robot and replied: "Then detonate it on time, the time is adjustable, and I can teleport."

"Let's go, find a terminal." The raven jumped onto the owner's shoulder and urged him to leave, "I will design a timed detonator and outer packaging, and let the robot make it."

With Modus's knowledge reserve, Marvin believed that it could design it, but there was still a question, "Where does the material come from?"

The raven answered nonchalantly: "Just dismantle one robot, if it's not enough, dismantle a few more..."

The dismantled nuclear warhead is a cone, installed in a rectangular iron box with a bottom side length of 60 cm and a height of 1 meter, with a timed detonation device on the top.

One man and one bird tossed around in this underground bunker for 2 days and took away 4 modified nuclear warheads.

It's not that I don't want to take more, but the inventory can't hold it.

To detonate a nuclear bomb, you have to bring a power armor to avoid lack of protection when entering the nuclear explosion zone.

You also have to bring a plasma Gatling gun, a group battle weapon, and other miscellaneous things, so there is not enough space.

Besides, 4 is really not enough.

...

In the morning, Marvin checked the weapons and equipment and the supplies in the inventory, especially after ensuring a special identity card, he walked out of the underground base.

This card was made by Modus before the White Spring Bunker was abandoned. It is an important evidence representing his identity as a member of the Appalachian branch of the Enclave, and it is also an identity certificate for visiting the Raven Rock Base.

Teleport to the vicinity of the crater and go directly to the scrap car area.

The broken place where scrap cars were originally piled up has now been renovated into a car modification factory.

After test driving Marvin's car, Meg asked Tal to start building their own car, and it was modified from a truck.

The truck in front of him, covered with steel armor, covered with thorns, and painted with the crater logo graffiti, is the next one.

Marvin looks familiar... Mad Max?

"How is it?" Tal swung his messy curly hair and showed off proudly: "Is my baby handsome? Full armor, heavy machine guns, flamethrowers, large rams, oversized tires, even if 50 people are put in, it can run faster than McLaren, and climbing a 30-degree slope is like playing..."

Compared with this big guy in front of him, Marvin's off-road vehicle is like a toy.

The body of the vehicle, which is one size smaller than an ordinary off-road vehicle, has no shell, no glass windows, no transmission, no reverse, no handbrake, and no seat belts. Anyway, there is nothing useless in the wasteland. Except for the engine, which has a thick layer of armor and spare tire protection, the whole car has no other protection and weapons, not even a machine gun.

The engine was removed from a car in the garage of Lakeside Manor, the chassis was modified from a piece of the outer wall of the space station, the four wheels and a spare tire were removed from a scrap truck, the hydraulic rod was removed from an excavator by Marvin, the headlights were bought from a scavenger, the frame was welded with scrap steel pipes, and the two seats were also removed from a scrap car. All the parts were pieced together.

This is exactly the car Marvin wanted, and it is enough to run to Washington.

"Cool, very cool." Marvin cooperated with Tal's show-off, walked to his SUV, climbed in from the roof, opened the cover next to the seat, inserted a fusion core, and started it.

The indicator light came on, but the car didn't move at all.

Normal, this SUV is nuclear-powered, similar to an electric car, and it is not a fuel engine at all, so of course it won't buzz.

"Leaving now?" Tal put his hand on the steel pipe on the roof and asked, "Don't you say hello to Boss Meg and the others?"

Marvin was silent for a while. If he really went to say goodbye to others, the scene... forget it.

"No need..." He patted the steering wheel, signaling Tal to back off, stepped on the accelerator, and the car moved forward. The huge tires rolled over the ground and made a slight creaking sound.

"Goodbye."

Tal smiled and waved, "Good luck, white-haired boy."

The off-road vehicle suddenly accelerated and rushed out of the crater.

...

From the crater to the east, there is a rugged wasteland. Marvin must first cross this wasteland and then cross the mountains along the winding mountain road to leave Appalachia.

Fortunately, the off-road performance of this car is really good. Even if the steep slope is more than 40 degrees, it can be rushed up with one foot of the accelerator.

It feels pretty good to speed through the wasteland at a speed of dozens of kilometers per hour, especially after getting rid of a group of radiation scorpions and knocking away two crazy zombies.

Marvin got the national highway traffic map from the White Spring Bunker, and the map of the learning machine was also updated synchronously. As long as the general direction is right, you can always drive to Washington and find the Raven Rock Base.

As we all know, the United States is a country on wheels, and the United States before the nuclear war is the same.

Highways are almost everywhere in this country. Even if nuclear war destroyed some sections of the road, driving along the road is still the most labor-saving way to travel.

Over the mountains, through the forests, down the mountains...

Off-road vehicles can't go fast in the mountains, and the poorly maintained roads are more damaged than expected.

Marvin was not in a hurry. He took off his helmet and drove slowly in the mountain breeze.

During the trip, he also met a group of refugees from Kingwood who were preparing to settle in Appalachia.

Marvin neither made things difficult nor cared for such harmless civilians. He pointed the way and asked them to find the responders in the Foundation or Pinglin Town. These two organizations were the friendliest to civilians.

After going down the mountain and finding the interstate highway, the speed increased, but not for long, only 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.

One reason was that the car was just okay, and the other was that the road conditions were really bad.

The road surface, which had been lacking maintenance for many years, was severely damaged by the overgrown vegetation. There were debris and ditches on the road from time to time, and even cracks several meters wide in some places, so they could only take a detour in the wilderness.

Fortunately, Marvin was strong enough to flip the car back by himself if it turned over, otherwise he would have to lose the car on the road.

The car was actually lost once.

On the third day, because he was really greedy, he hid the car in the woods, teleported back to the Foundation to eat lizard skewers and stewed beef, and slept comfortably in the base at night. As a result, when he came back in the morning, he found that the car was gone.

Through magic, he successfully retrieved the off-road vehicle and killed the gang of predators entrenched in the town.

If the road is intact, it is about 470 kilometers from leaving Appalachia to Dulles International Airport.

If the car is in good condition, it can definitely be reached in 5 hours.

But now the road condition is bad and the car is in average condition. It took Marvin 5 days to drive 500 kilometers. Note ②

And the farther away from Appalachia, the worse the weather.

The land is dry and water-deficient, the sky is full of sand and dust, the trees have almost no leaves, and the wild grass on the roadside is all yellow or gray-black.

The off-road vehicle does not have a windshield, but he has a helmet and does not need that thing.

The road is not peaceful either. There are crazy zombies, wild dogs, monsters, super mutants, gang predators... everything you need.

At the beginning, he might be ambushed, but after becoming more and more skilled, Marvin can find the enemy's traces even two kilometers away, which can be regarded as a little experience in fighting the enemy.

The area marked as Dulles International Airport on the map has become several huge bomb craters and a piece of broken building debris. Even the road passing by has been destroyed, and the environmental radiation value has risen to 13.

The off-road vehicle sped through the wasteland north of the original site of the airport, smashing several ghouls and mutant wild dogs and heading northeast. The Enclave's secret base is not far away.

They called it the Raven Rock Base. On the pre-war map, it did not exist, only a rolling mountain.

As they approached the target, Marvin stopped the car and changed into an Enclave-style military uniform, but without a rank. This was found in the White Spring Bunker.

He took out a big bag from the inventory and stuffed some clothes, food and medicine into it, completing the camouflage and continued to move forward.

The off-road vehicle entered a valley and was blocked by barbed wire.

There were double-opening gates on the barbed wire, and automatic turrets with cement bases were built on both sides. The cement base under the turrets was also a bunker for the garrison soldiers.

Two soldiers came out in strange-looking power armor and shouted, "Get out!"

When they saw that the person in the broken car was wearing a neat Enclave officer uniform, they were stunned.

The two looked at each other and confirmed that they were not people they knew.

The other soldier asked carefully, "Who are you?"

...

Note ①: There is a bug in the nuclear bomb in the game Fallout 76. The missiles that can be seen in the nuclear bomb silo look bigger than the Dongfeng 31A. According to that size, it is a strategic nuclear weapon, but the explosion area after launch is only a small circle, which can't even cover one-sixth of the Cranberry Swamp.

This bug is too big, so I changed it. I didn't move the big missiles, and built a warehouse that doesn't exist in the game, and put tactical nuclear bombs in it, which is very reasonable.

Here are some data, which are also the data I used for reference in the book.

The "Little Boy" that exploded over Hiroshima in 1945 had an equivalent of only 13,000 tons and a blast range of only 2 kilometers, killing 70,000 people. This is also the reason why the little boy can use the B29 bomber to drop bombs. If the explosion range is too large, the bomber can't escape.

The B61-12 tactical nuclear bomb of the mold will be put into service in 2021. The maximum thermonuclear warhead equivalent it can carry is 50,000 tons, which is also the data closest to the tactical nuclear bomb in the book.

The design equivalent of the famous "Big Ivan" is 170 million tons, and it was finally changed to 50 million tons. The explosion fireball radius can reach 4,600 meters, and the explosion affects hundreds of kilometers.

The world of the Fallout series has turned since World War II. After more than a hundred years of development, the nuclear bomb technology of the United States cannot stand still. It is really unreasonable for such a large strategic nuclear missile to have only the power in the game.

Note ②: According to the original outline, there will be some side stories on the way, such as the cannibal town, the poisonous insect predator, the alien UFO... But since the readers all hope that the wasteland volume will end soon, I will not write it. I will write a sequel when I have time in the future.
