95. The Soul Mentor

Lin Nuo returns to his usual spot, facing Willow Shuqin, leaning against the bamboo, looking down at the splendid view below, and takes out a pork floss bun, biting into it.

Watching Lin Nuo’s profile, Willow Shuqin feels a bit more at ease. At least now, she’s not viewing the scenery alone, not as lonely.

“Here.”

Lin Nuo tosses a pork floss bun to Willow Shuqin, and she catches it reflexively.

But she just holds it in her hands, not eating.

She knows Lin Nuo loves these pork floss buns, and her second junior sister, Qin Shili, also started to like them after trying them because of Lin Nuo.

Everyone has their own taste in food; she had her fair share of pork floss cakes. Tasty as they were, she wasn’t as obsessed as Lin Nuo.

Lin Nuo didn’t care whether she ate them or not, giving her a piece was enough for him.

“Junior brother, I heard about the ordeal you faced during the last mental state trial, that you encountered inner demons. How are you feeling now, is your spirit still well?”

“It’s a trifle.”

Lin Nuo replied calmly, turning to Liu Shuqin, “The scenery here is indeed beautiful, but you wouldn’t come just for this. It must be related to the failure of your mental state trial.”

“You worry too much, junior brother. I’m not troubled by the trial.”

“Failing the mental state trial is not something to be ashamed of. On the contrary, it requires facing it head-on. You’re lost, unsure of which direction to take, right?”

Lin Nuo’s gaze was piercing, as if seeing through to the depths of Liu Shuqin’s heart. His words were incisive, foregoing pleasantries and getting straight to the point.

“Junior brother, what are you talking about? I don’t quite understand.”

Liu Shuqin maintained her smile, constantly trying to mask her unease and confusion.

But this deception didn’t fool Lin Nuo; her current demeanor and eyes had already betrayed her.

Her gaze was hazy, lacking her usual confidence.

“Just consider it me talking to myself. One should recognize and accept their place, not be blinded by status or rank. No one has ever said that those of higher status are necessarily stronger. Temporary weakness is not disgraceful; what’s disgraceful is perpetual weakness. Su Kexin, Qin Shili, they are the favored ones, destined by the heavens, and you needn’t concern yourself with them. You are not ordinary either, it’s just a pity you’ve lost your confidence, which will doom you to mediocrity, unless you choose to be ordinary.”

Lin Nuo spoke relentlessly, his words striking at the heart of Liu Shuqin. She had never shared her troubles with Lin Nuo, yet he saw right through her.

Liu Shuqin sighed, “What about you, junior brother? Do you think you’re ordinary?”

“I am extraordinary, both in the past and the future.”

Lin Nuo had great confidence in himself. After all, he was the arch-villain, destined to be killed by the protagonist Su Kexin in the story. Yet, he was doing everything in his power to resist this fate, which was certainly not ordinary, even more passionate than the tales of Boruto.

Defying fate starts with me.

“Junior brother is indeed extraordinary, and very inspiring. Unknown within our sect, yet poised to make a name in one battle, like an ancient emperor biding his time, ultimately to unfold a grand vision, having put in great effort.”

“It’s just contrary to wishes.”

Lin Nuo waved off her words, dismissing the idea of making a name in one battle, of unfolding a grand vision. He hadn’t even killed the protagonist yet and was still enduring humiliation, being called a hero and a great warrior every day, which was humiliating enough.

Listening to Lin Nuo’s nonchalant tone, Liu Shuqin felt even more impressed by him.

Contrary to wishes?

Indeed, a person with grand ambitions like junior brother, if one looks at the world, I am just slightly famous. His goal must be to become a true hero of justice, saving the people.

Without fame spread across the world, that is contrary to wishes.

Thinking about it, her own experiences were much better than his. At least she didn’t have a dark past, wasn’t mocked by her peers, nor neglected by her master. She thought, if she had to go through what he did, she might have given up and become disheartened.

Compared to junior brother, her issues were trivial. Yes, without confidence, one is doomed to mediocrity.

Junior brother is right; it’s not about being of higher status and therefore needing to be stronger. One needs to know their place.

In the past, she used pale words to comfort him, all generic phrases like “things will get better,” but now he analyzed her situation, pinpointing her weaknesses.

By comparison, she truly felt inferior.

She always felt that her junior brother had experienced the vicissitudes of life, treating everything with a calm and detached air.

“Junior brother, the day for alchemy practice is coming. Let’s work hard together.”

“At the peak of North Mountain lies a cave, within it, an image of a holy Buddha. Forget alchemy, go there, meditate, and contemplate your position and direction. Otherwise, no amount of cultivation will do anything but wear down your confidence and passion.”

Liu Shuqin found his words reasonable; indeed, her worries had been hindering her, and her recent cultivation had come to a standstill.

“Alright, I will go.”

Liu Shuqin bowed to Lin Nuo in gratitude.

Lin Nuo hoped she would go, to stop chasing after the art of alchemy.

After all, that place could go ‘boom’ in an instant, and then it would all be over.

“I should leave,” Lin Nuo stood up.

“So soon, won’t you stay a bit longer?”

“I can’t stay, I don’t want to be discovered by a third person here.”

He felt Qin Shili was approaching and hurriedly made his escape.
