Cunfa originally refers to the skin being dry and cracked due to cold or wind. In landscape painting, Cunfa is a painting technique that expresses the surface of mountains, rocks, peaks and bark. Cunfa is a sign of the maturity of landscape painting.

Landscape paintings before the Sui and Tang Dynasties were "empty outlines without Cunfa", while landscape paintings after the Tang Dynasty were "complete with Cunfa and dyeing". It can even be said that the development and standardization of Cunfa contributed to the development and peak of ancient landscape painting.
