#85 - Chapter 10: Purchase of Slaves

Kraznys mo Nakloz was still a young man, not yet thirty. The Kraznys family had great influence in Astapor, and many Good Masters subtly looked to him as their leader.

However, he spoke with reserved politeness, and a female slave behind him said in standard Common Tongue, "Greetings, esteemed guest! My master, Kraznys mo Nakloz, welcomes you to the great Astapor. We hope you enjoy your stay here! May I inquire as to what brings you here?"

Liu Yuan could actually understand their Valyrian, but he didn't reveal this and continued in Common Tongue, "I have already sensed your kindness and enthusiasm. I am here for trade, primarily to purchase some high-quality slaves. The number may be quite large, and I hope you all can assist me then."

The female slave quickly provided a simultaneous translation, expressing it accurately. The majority of the Good Masters present did not understand Common Tongue, but they all heard that he was there for business. The smiles in their eyes were barely concealed, and they smiled even more brightly.

Seeing that the situation was becoming somewhat chaotic, Ledylo spoke up, "Please, everyone, quiet down. Mr. Garon has traveled far and has not yet settled into accommodations. Blocking the square like this is not the Astapori way of treating guests."

Nakloz also said, "A banquet will be held in my pyramid tonight, and I formally invite you to be my guest." The female slave translated his meaning, and Liu Yuan thought for a moment before agreeing.

Ledylo led Liu Yuan to a stepped pyramid, pointing to it and saying, "Mr. Garon, this is the residence arranged for you. Please rest assured that only servants assigned to you will be here. If you need anything, you can directly instruct the servants here. They can fulfill your every request." Liu Yuan truly didn't expect that they would directly arrange a small pyramid for him, for which he expressed his gratitude.

This stepped pyramid was not large, divided into six levels, about thirty meters high. The third level could be reached directly via the steps, inside which was a large hall. Levels four and five above this were bedrooms and functional rooms, and the top floor was a rooftop garden. The bottom two floors were for the rooms of servants and attendants, and the kitchen and warehouse were also located here.

Ledylo handed over the rights to use the pyramid and then took his leave. Faelan immediately led the guard to take over the security work here. In fact, Liu Yuan didn't feel tired. He came to the rooftop terrace, sat on a lounge chair, and leisurely surveyed the city. Several female slaves fanned him with large feather fans. The table next to him was filled with fresh fruit, and Liu Yuan waved his hand, refusing the female slave's offer to feed him. In fact, there were seven other similar small pyramids nearby, all used to entertain VIPs.

The entire city of Astapor had no more than 200,000 people, but nearly 90% of the population were slaves, and the rest were slave owners and their families. Most of the free citizens lived in the surrounding towns, managing manors or serving as low-level officials. Except for a few officers, the city guards were also all slaves. Only a cavalry force of less than a thousand men was composed of noble children.

In addition to the Unsullied, Astapor also trained other types of war slaves, such as charioteers, riders, archers, gladiators, and so on. Those with skills such as blacksmiths, tanners, carpenters, masons, literate scribes, and cooks were considered high-level slaves, different from the livestock-like slaves in the square. They were very valuable.

Liu Yuan's purpose in coming this time was to purchase these slaves. To support a large force, it was not enough to simply have an army; there also had to be a base of operations that could support the army. Directly purchasing a batch of skilled craftsmen was much more cost-effective than slowly training them himself.

At the evening banquet, Liu Yuan ordered his guards to carry up boxes filled with gold coins one by one. For the sake of the countless shining gold coins, he reached a series of cooperation agreements with the Good Masters.

This time, he would purchase at least 3,500 Unsullied in Astapor in a single transaction, and would continue to purchase no less than 1,500 Unsullied every year thereafter, as well as an additional 500 other types of war slaves and at least 1,500 skilled artisan slaves.

Every four months, Liu Yuan's fleet would transport a batch of goods, mainly some specialties from Westeros, as well as mirror steel and high-end perfumes produced by Liu Yuan's workshops. When the fleet returned, it would take away trained slaves and tanned cattle and sheep leather from Astapor. Due to the stable large-scale transaction, the price of the Unsullied was reduced to 165 gold marks per person (small gold coins circulating between Yunkai and Astapor, one side engraved with a stepped pyramid and the other with the Ghiscari harpy), worth the equivalent of 53 gold dragons.

To this end, in addition to selling all the goods, Liu Yuan also paid a price of 150,000 gold dragons, purchasing 3,700 Unsullied and 600 war slaves, as well as 500 skilled technical slaves of various kinds. As a result, he was unable to transport these slaves back across the sea in one go.

Therefore, he negotiated with the Good Masters to have them deliver all these slaves to the Black Coast in the Long Summer Land across the Narrow Sea, where there was a branch connecting to the ancient Valyrian road. Liu Yuan decided to personally lead these warriors to the west coast of Essos by land. As long as they reached the Disputed Lands or Pentos, they could take ships back to Westeros. Bandel, on the other hand, would lead the Dawn Star and take a portion of the artisan slaves back to Crab Island by sea first.

Bandel expressed his opposition: "Lord, what you are doing is too risky! It is thousands of leagues from here back to the west coast, not to mention the dangerous areas along the way. You also need to pass through the Dothraki Sea and Volantis, etc., along which there are nearly a hundred city-states and tribes of all sizes. Moreover, after the Rhoynar fled, the bandits on the Rhoyne River are now rampant. There are countless Dothraki people looting along the way. I have seen the endless cavalry whizzing past!"

Liu Yuan curled his lips, he really didn't take these Dothraki people, who were still in nomadic tribes, seriously. In the previous world, his main enemies were nomadic cavalry, Tatars, Oirats, Kazakhs, Yuezhi, Yarkand people, and Turkmens, all of whom were experts in cavalry warfare. He waved his hand and said, "It doesn't matter, my geography and folklore studies are not for nothing. You should know that I am leading an army mainly composed of Unsullied. Since the Battle of Qohor, the Dothraki have tried to avoid fighting the Unsullied as much as possible. If there are any city-states or thieves who cause trouble along the way, it's a good opportunity to hone my army."

In the end, Bandel was persuaded. The transportation process was relatively smooth. The Dawn Star and the temporarily hired merchant ships took less than ten days to transport all his troops to Toros in the northeast of the Long Summer Land. In addition, in order to ensure such a large team traveled far, Liu Yuan also purchased a large amount of food and supplies, and prepared a lot of horses and vehicles.
