#74 - Chapter 37: The Tournament at Lannisport
Inside the room, the two sat across from each other at the table. Adrian couldn't help but scrutinize Liu Yuan. He understood his youngest son less and less. His appearance resembled that of the people from the Eastern Continent, and he was even taller than him. It was said that he excelled in all subjects at the Citadel, and many maesters believed he would become the youngest archmaester.
Yet, he still abandoned his studies, choosing another path. In just a few short years, he had gathered a considerable force, surpassing even many noble families with centuries of heritage. In the recent battle to quell the Iron Islands rebellion, he also demonstrated remarkable military prowess.
Adrian said, "Your title and the new sigil of your house have been registered in King's Landing. You have now founded your own new house and become a true lord. This is something many people can't achieve in their entire lives. What are your plans for the future?"
Liu Yuan: "Thank you, Father. The captured craftsmen will be perfect for building a castle. I will transfer some of my businesses to my fief and recruit some new subjects. Next, I plan to travel to the Eastern Continent. I'm quite interested in it. Oh, right, I also want to ask you for someone. Ser Bandel has been running overseas routes for many years, and he knows Essos, especially the Free Cities, very well. Let me have him!"
Adrian: "Mody! He's a capable man, just a bit lacking in strength. If he agrees himself, then he's yours! But your territory is just starting out, and you're already running off to the other side of the Narrow Sea..."
Liu Yuan: "It's okay. My stewards have been well-trained these past few years. All the matters are arranged. They just need to do their jobs according to the plan. As long as I control the finances and military power, it doesn't matter much whether I'm in the territory or not."
Adrian nodded approvingly: "Very good. It seems you learned a lot at the Citadel. You already know how to be a lord, but I still have to tell you, be mindful of your neighbors."
Liu Yuan: "I know that. There are only three neighbors bordering my territory: the Hogg family of Sow's Horn, the Wood family of Rain House, and the Paege family across the river. They are all landed knights with weak strength. I'll leave the remaining three hundred heavy infantry behind when I leave."
Adrian: "Since you've already made your decision, I won't say anything more. Is there enough funding to build the castle? I can ship some from Crab Isle."
Liu Yuan shook his head: "No need. I have enough money. I melted down the Valyrian steel short sword you gave me and added some materials to reforge three swords. One of them, along with a set of golden armor, I sold to Duke Tywin. The Lannisters are rich. I sold it for 300,000 gold dragons."
"Cough cough cough!" Adrian choked on his drink, coughing several times in a row: "Since that's the case, I'm relieved!"
...................................
The next day, Lannisport was bustling with people. Tournaments have always been a popular activity with the public, and Lannisport has hosted several large-scale tournaments in its history. The city has a dedicated competition venue that is much more formal than the temporary venue of the Harrenhal tournament.
A knight in gray-black plate armor appeared at one end of the track. His distinctive dog-shaped helmet proved that this person was Sandor Clegane, the Hound. Since Joffrey's birth, Tywin had sent the Hound to be his sworn shield, and he had hardly left his side.
In fact, Sandor Clegane also yearned for glory on the battlefield. This time, he was fighting on behalf of Prince Joffrey. Sandor Clegane turned his gaze to the other side, to a tall figure in black armor on the high platform. That man was his brother, Gregor Clegane, the Mountain, a notorious villain known throughout the Seven Kingdoms.
His eyes became solemn. He had originally thought he would have to settle his grudges with the Mountain ahead of time. But as cheers rang out, a figure appeared at the other end of the track.
It was a person wearing strange scale armor. The style of the armor was very different from what was common in Westeros, and even the warhorse beneath him was covered in similar armor. The "clip-clop" of hooves gave people a strange sense of rhythm. The family crest on the round shield was a serpentine monster, with a head somewhat like a dragon but without dragon wings.
The man rode his horse to the other side of the track and leveled the lance he held high in his right hand. The tournament judge shouted loudly: "Contestants, please take your positions. This is Prince Joffrey's sworn shield, the loyal 'Hound' Sandor Clegane. The challenger is the fourteen-year-old Ser Garron Dayne, who performed valiantly in the defense of Pyke and was knighted by our King Robert himself." The person was Liu Yuan. He had been idle these past few days and wanted to try his hand. The armor he was wearing was a replica of the Kirin General Armor (an exquisite lamellar armor), with some local improvements. He had used all of his remaining Valyrian metal on it, and its defensive power was more than a notch above knightly plate armor.
Sandor Clegane didn't have time to think about other things. He forcefully closed his visor and spurred his horse to the side of the track, holding his lance high. As the bronze bell rang, it was the signal for the start of the competition. The two simultaneously spurred their horses to accelerate their charge, their lances, more than four meters long, pointing directly at their opponent.
Liu Yuan thrust out a somewhat awkward lance. This kind of cone-shaped lance with a handguard was difficult to use! After all, he had not received systematic knightly education. As expected, this thrust missed. Sandor Clegane dodged with a tilt of his head, the lance tip not even touching him. He thrust out his lance with his right hand. Liu Yuan reacted extremely quickly, raising his shield with his left hand to block the blow. The force of the collision between knights was enormous, and the wooden shaft immediately shattered into pieces.
The two spurred their horses to the opposite end of the track, turning their horses to prepare for the next round. Sandor took a new lance. He could see that his opponent was a novice, but his horsemanship and physical fitness were very strong. What he had to do was knock him off his horse before his opponent adapted. Liu Yuan was also not used to this kind of knightly combat. If he had a horse lance, he could have poked several holes in that dog-headed man. Moreover, the tournament lance was too brittle. The lance broke even though he hadn't put much force on the shield just now!
The warhorses began to accelerate again. The two quickly approached. This time, Sandor attacked first, his target being his opponent's waist. Liu Yuan did not use his shield. He not only parried Sandor's attack with a horizontal sweep of his lance, but the lance tip also grazed his shield, almost hitting his head. Sandor broke out in a cold sweat. He had been careless, and he had almost been hit just now. He only realized that the lance in his hand was broken when the warhorses reached the end, but it was not completely broken. He changed to another tournament lance.
Liu Yuan had already turned back, carrying his lance, preparing for the third round of the competition. This time, he simply hung his shield on his back and held the lance with both hands. Liu Yuan felt that this was more comfortable, as if it were a large horse-chopping sword. His actions caused an uproar among the audience. No one had ever seen a lance used like this.
The warhorses quickly approached. Liu Yuan gripped his lance tightly and stabbed diagonally from bottom to top. This strike avoided Sandor's lance, knocked away his shield, and the lance tip directly struck his dog-shaped helmet. However, the lance had become very fragile after the previous collisions and shattered directly, so this strike did not land solidly.
Even so, Sandor was still dizzy, his ears were ringing, and he even dropped his lance halfway. It took him several minutes to recover. He took another lance from a servant and stared at Liu Yuan. This time, he would go all out and fight to the finish!
Liu Yuan turned his horse around. A servant handed him a new lance. He looked at the half lance in his hand, which was still more than two meters long, and refused. This round, he seemed very casual, holding the lance shaft in his left hand and charging forward on his horse. The distance between the two was getting closer and closer. Sandor suddenly exerted force, stepped on the stirrups, straightened his body, and thrust forward forcefully.
Liu Yuan didn't make any extra movements. Just before the lance reached his body, he leaned to the side and tilted backward, dodging the blow. Then, he quickly stood up and gave a fierce backhand strike. This strike hit Sandor hard in the back, and the tournament lance shattered into powder. And Sandor's original upright body was also knocked off his horse by this blow and sent flying.
