#4 - Chapter 4: Appearance is determined by the mind

The castle served as the lord's residence, housing approximately 80 professional armored soldiers responsible for the daily guard duties and patrols. There were also about the same number of servants who took care of the lord's family, the soldiers' needs, and the general upkeep of the castle. As for the lord's family, they mostly lived in the upper levels, so he had never actually seen them.

Being a lord wasn't easy; maintaining the livelihood of so many people was a considerable expense. It was common for nobles and landed knights to go bankrupt due to poor management, forcing them to sell their properties and wander, seek employment, or find a new lord to serve.

The other people lived in villages or ports outside the castle. Liu Yuan carefully observed them and noticed their poor living conditions. The houses of ordinary people were just low walls made of stones, topped with a structure of branches and thatched roofs, far inferior to the adobe houses of the common people in the Great Ming Dynasty of his previous world.

Liu Yuan also noticed the severe lack of ironware among the people. Only a few families owned iron pots, and most used pottery. Consequently, their cooking methods were limited to boiling. Even their utensils and everyday items were made of wood. Everyone's skin looked aged due to constant exposure to the sea breeze, leading him to estimate that Vina was probably only eighteen or nineteen years old. Alas, what a tragedy!

The commoners were very respectful towards the soldiers and servants in the castle, especially those like Buma who had purchasing power, appearing quite humble.

The sanitation conditions here were terrible. Sewage and human and animal waste were everywhere, both inside the castle and in the villages. In such an environment, the infant mortality rate was undoubtedly very high.

He had seen people burying dead infants more than once.

Weakness is a sin. Liu Yuan now deeply understood this. If he had been born into a poor family, he probably wouldn't have survived.

Time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, Liu Yuan was already one year old. Due to the need for Yuanqi body tempering, his physical development was slower than his peers, and he needed a lot of sleep every day, making him seem sickly. The gray-robed old man in the castle had come to see him, shook his head without saying a word, and left. Liu Yuan was dismissive of his behavior, convinced that the old fellow couldn't figure out what was wrong with him and was just putting on an act.

Buma, on the other hand, was quite satisfied with the child because Liu Yuan never caused her any trouble and didn't cry like other children. He was very quiet as long as he was fed. Buma often held Liu Yuan and vented to him. He was a very attentive listener, and thanks to Buma's talkative nature, Liu Yuan's language skills progressed very quickly, and he could now understand their daily conversations.

Oh, right, Liu Yuan had also mastered a new skill: the ability to consciously control his sleep time. He was forced into it. The bald man named Balin, the lord's steward, managed all the servants in the castle. He often sneaked into the room at night to meet with Buma. They were both at an age of intense desire, and the ensuing commotion annoyed him. As winter approached, and there were few entertainment options in this era, Balin came to see Buma more and more frequently. Liu Yuan couldn't stand it, so he developed this skill and could now fall asleep in five seconds.

Liu Yuan saw his appearance reflected in the washbasin. His skin was very white, and his hair was silver-gold. If it weren't for his deep purple eyes, he would have thought he had albinism. Gradually, he learned from others that he might be the illegitimate child of some important figure in the castle, which was why he received some care. Liu Yuan suspected it was the lord.

He once saw the lord's family traveling outside the castle. The lord was taking his wife and children to a banquet at another lord's estate. The lord's son was about eleven or twelve years old. What he couldn't understand was that the lord had black hair, Vina also had black hair, yet they had a silver-haired child. And the people around didn't seem surprised. He gradually learned the term 'dragon seed'. Anyway, he didn't like his appearance or the way people looked at him.

Perhaps because of this, some unknown changes occurred in his body without him realizing it.

………………………………………

In the year 280 of Aegon's Conquest, time flew by, and Liu Yuan was already five years old. Many things had happened in these years. One of the most talked-about was that Liu Yuan's original silver-gold hair had gradually turned black. Even his purple eyes had become dark and deep, and his skin and appearance had also changed strangely. Later, his supposed father, Count Adrian, saw these changes and stopped caring about him.

Liu Yuan was quite satisfied with this because he found that his current appearance was becoming more and more like his former self from the Blue Star, which evoked many childhood memories. Buma still cared about him as before, and he was very close to this adoptive mother. When he was two years old, Buma had also given birth to a child, whose father was definitely Balin. Unfortunately, the child died shortly after birth. Liu Yuan stayed with her for several days before Buma emerged from her grief. He heard that she had had several miscarriages before, perhaps because she was getting older or had some physical problems. Buma didn't get pregnant again, and Balin came less and less often. However, Liu Yuan heard from other maids that Balin had hooked up with other young maids. From then on, Buma poured all her love into Liu Yuan.

Liu Yuan, like the other children living in the castle, had started to learn to work, even though he was only five years old. But he often looked sleepy and was smaller than other children of the same age. But he was very strong and had nimble hands, helping Buma with tasks such as peeling potatoes and washing vegetables. Unlike other children who were always dirty, he was always clean, both in body and clothes. Liu Yuan also had a delicate appearance, which made him popular with the kitchen staff.

Through his unremitting efforts, his physical condition had greatly improved, and he could now stay active for more than eight hours a day. The gray-robed old man in the lord's tower often came to find him. The old man's name was Wells. Later, he learned that Wells was the city's scholar. This position was, in a way, the lord's advisor, and also served as a doctor and tutor. He was arguably the most knowledgeable person in the entire territory. The servants said that the large black crows on the lord's tower were also raised by the scholar.

But Liu Yuan didn't have a good impression of this old man. Perhaps Liu Yuan's appearance changes had aroused his curiosity. Wells would cut off some of his hair and nails every time he came, and even pierce his finger with a small knife to collect blood. Every time he saw the brownish-black rust on the dagger, he knew that this old man didn't understand what sterilization was. However, the old man was very particular, and would leave him a few copper coins after each sampling.
