The Eagle of Eastern Europe
Chapter 30 Moldovan Affairs
Mircea returned to Iasi.
Before that, he had settled all the affairs in the north. Not only did they send people to garrison the castles on the border with Poland, they also eliminated some boyars with ulterior motives.
This time the capital was moved, Mircea brought part of the boyars to Iasi. This is to facilitate care and prevent them from making small moves.
"May God be with you, ruler of Wallachia and Moldova."
Peter bowed to Mircea, and he must not lose the way of being a king and a minister.
Mircea looked at Iasi under construction and became more determined about what he was going to announce next.
"How are you these days in Iasi?" Mircea asked Peter.
"In general, Moldova has great potential for development and it will take some time."
High emotional intelligence means huge development potential, while low emotional intelligence means the starting point is too low. But that’s it, this place cannot develop in ten or eight years.
"You did a good job, so I can leave this place to you with confidence."
Peter heard what Mircea meant, but he was still unsure and asked.
"You mean?"
Mircea nodded, "Yes, I will appoint you as the governor of Moldova."
Although he was prepared, Peter was still a little excited when the decision was told to him.
"Father, I think I may not be qualified for this position?"
Peter also wanted to be modest, but Mircea wouldn't give him the chance.
"The actions in Dobroga and Iasi have proven that you are qualified for this position. Now that Moldova needs to recuperate, you are the most suitable candidate."
"I will go back soon. Hungary has sent a letter asking our country to send troops to help Bulgaria, so everything here has to be left to you. Of course, I will grant you supreme power."
After his father said this, Peter was no longer humble.
"I will do your will and use your power to govern this land."
Mircea patted him on the shoulder, her eyes full of recognition for him.
The next day, in a humble conference hall in Iasi, Mircea announced the decision.
“I hope you can build Moldova together.”
The boyars all expressed their loyalty to Peter, but they didn't know what they were thinking. Some wanted to make a profit, others wanted to flatter Peter. Because Mircea granted Peter the highest power in Moldova, including military command power, law-making power, the power to increase or decrease taxation, etc., and also gave Peter the two coastal fortresses of Kilia and Ackerman as private fiefs. This also made him the most authoritative and largest lord in Moldova. If they didn’t listen to Peter, who would they listen to?
Mircea asked Peter to do something bold, and no matter what it was, he absolutely supported it.
With the Archduke's nod, Peter had nothing to worry about. After Grand Duke Mircea left, he began drastic reforms.
He first appointed Boris in Constanta as the ruler of Dobroga, and was responsible for the civil administration of Dobroga during his absence. And a group of technical personnel were transferred from Dobroga to take charge of economic town construction. He also ordered the Chamber of Commerce to bring 80,000 ducats to help.
At the boyar meeting, Peter faced a dozen boyars. Officially made his voice heard.
"I know that some of you will sneer at me and think that I am too young. But I will never back down. I hope that you can work together to build our common home, not only for the Grand Duke, but also for you."
Of course, in addition to speaking, you also have to give them some benefits. Peter granted some lands to them, most notably Bogdan, whom Peter granted more than 1,500 acres of land.
Bogdan also learned some skills in managing the territory from Peter's side. For example, he leased part of the land to landless farmers and collected rent and taxes every year. He also began to engage in economic industries such as grapes and beekeeping. It can be said that he was the first Moldovan boyar to change.
In response to his loyalty, Peter appointed Bogdan as conference director, responsible for the preparation of the Boyar Conference and the preparation of topics. Relying on the loyal boyars, Peter quickly stabilized the political situation.
Next is the economy. Peter has read in national books that Moldova is suitable for growing grapes, sugar beets, tobacco, sunflowers and other cash crops; but now, tobacco and sunflowers are still in the Americas, so just plant grapes and sugar beets vigorously.
When it comes to where grapes are best, of course they are the Principality of Burgundy and France. Wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux are the most famous in Europe. If grapes and technologies from the two countries can be introduced, this place will become another wine base in the next few decades.
By promoting the popularization of iron farm tools, Moldova's productivity will continue to increase. Policies have also been issued to encourage the development of the brewing industry; this will be a pillar industry in Moldova.
In addition, there is room for expansion of Moldova’s livestock industry. Introducing new breeds such as Merino and British sheep can increase their economic value.
Merino sheep are the collective name for fine-wool sheep breeds native to Spain. During the Roman Empire, breeding fine-wool sheep and using their wool to make woolen fabrics was one of the most profitable sectors in Spain's economy.
The wool of Merino sheep is very suitable for textiles, but in this era, Spain strictly prohibited the export of Merino sheep, and offenders were punished with death. However, there is no such order for British sheep. He also wants to cross the two sheep to get a new breed. What is certain is that the wool of this sheep may not be as good as purebred Merino sheep, but it is definitely finer and better than the wool of British sheep. In later generations, countries around the world often introduced Merino sheep genes to improve local sheep to obtain better fine-wool sheep.
However, at this time it was still a movement to reconquer the lost territories. Grenada in the south is still hanging on, so it should be possible to take advantage of this opportunity to smuggle sheep. But now it’s better to finish the things in front of you first.
Peter also made reforms in taxation. Prior to this, Moldova's taxes included beekeeping tax, hotel tax, city entry and exit tax, etc., which were not only complicated in name, but also very troublesome to collect. Although the tax exemption measure has been set for one to three years, changes must be made.
In the original taxation, Peter deleted those various tax items. Commercial taxes and customs duties will be retained, and basic public taxes will be established. Farmers and citizens will have to pay fixed taxes. And all boyars must also turn over their personal income based on their income for that year. Of course they don't need to train anymore.
