The Comprehensive Evolution of American Comics
#483 - A magical family
Although Yang Le was spouting Homelander's famous quotes, he meant every word of it. To face a superhuman who could crush reinforced concrete with ease, with the body of an ordinary man, truly required immense courage.
After saying that, Yang Le didn't linger. Relying on Ultimate Humungousaur's exaggerated jumping power, he leaped high into the air like a rocket, reaching the clouds above.
After breaking through the clouds, Yang Le began to fall rapidly under the influence of gravity. During this process, he constantly searched for his target.
After receiving more information from the soldiers, Yang Le prioritized the different districts in his mind. In his opinion, the most important target right now should be Manhattan.
According to the soldiers, many ordinary people in Manhattan hadn't been evacuated because it was located in the core area. Clearly, that was the area that needed to be dealt with first.
In fact, the surrounding areas were also important. After all, there was a possibility that the giants might try to escape. It would be terrible if they spread to the surrounding cities.
However, the military had obviously thought of this and had already set up a cordon around New York City to prevent the giants from spreading outwards, so Yang Le didn't need to worry about the surrounding areas for the time being.
So, in the current situation, Manhattan was still Yang Le's primary target. For example, his eyes now spotted a target in dire need of help.
It seemed to be a uniquely shaped robot, blocking a giant's path and wrestling with it. Around them were several people; a woman was struggling to help a man up from the ground.
In front of them was a man carrying a huge backpack. The man also seemed to be holding something connected to the backpack. Yang Le couldn't see the details clearly; Ultimate Humungousaur's vision wasn't that good.
But it looked like those people really needed his help. Without thinking, the enhanced limbs behind him sprayed flames again, and Yang Le increased his speed, rushing towards that direction.
…
"We need to hurry, Susan. Ben can't hold on for too long."
The thin man with the backpack shouted to the siblings behind him without turning his head. Hearing this, the sister immediately quickened her pace, but the brother she was supporting was clearly having trouble with his leg. His calf was practically 'cocked' to the side.
"Forget about me, Sis," the brother said, his face stiff, beads of sweat dripping from his forehead. He was clearly in a lot of pain.
"Hurry up and run with Reed and Ben. You won't get far carrying me."
"It's the 21st century, Johnny," the sister said seriously, looking at her brother. "You don't need to run yourself, and no one will carry you, but we have a car. Do you know what a car is? It's the thing you drive around in every day to pick up girls."
"Bang!"
A loud noise came, followed by a teeth-grinding sound like fingernails scratching a blackboard, then another loud noise, followed by the crackling of shattered glass.
"Uh, can we go back to the 19th century now?" Reed looked at the car next to him, crushed by something like an excavator claw. "We might need a few horses."
"If you can build a time machine."
"You know, if I want to, I definitely can."
"You should say such cool things to my sister, not to me, a cripple."
"Is this the time to be chatting?" Susan interrupted the men's nonsense, annoyed. "Think of a solution, Mr. Smarty Pants. We're about to die!"
"It's okay, Susan," Reed ran towards another car not far away. Obviously, its owner had abandoned it and fled.
"No keys, I knew it," Reed muttered to himself as he broke the car window. Then he opened the car lock, sat in the driver's seat, and started pulling out wires like in the movies, preparing to start the car without a key.
"Boom!"
While the others were talking, Ben, driving that ugly robot, was still entangled with the giant. Ben had a strong combat sense. Relying on this crude robot that Reed had cobbled together in just ten minutes, he was able to fight the giant for so long.
But this thing's output was still too low. Finally, the giant caught an opening and tore off an arm – the excavator claw that had crushed their car. Losing an arm, Ben was naturally no longer the giant's match. After a few more minutes, the robot was finally overwhelmed and about to break down.
Ben could only pull the escape device that Reed had left for him, and before he could even sit still, he was ejected from the robot along with the seat.
"Buzz!"
The car engine roared, and Reed said with a relaxed expression, "Okay, it's started. Get Ben and let's escape."
"Bang!"
The same collision sound and glass shattering sound came again. Reed sat in the driver's seat, looking at Ben sitting on an office chair outside the windowless front, the two staring at each other.
"Good news, I'm here," Ben smiled憨厚ly.
"Bad news, the engine's gone," Reed couldn't help but say.
"There's more bad news, the giant is catching up!" Susan looked at the giant rushing towards them on all fours, feeling like she was definitely going to die today.
"Don't worry, I still have a way," Reed quickly jumped out of the driver's seat, took out something that looked like a hairdryer from his belt, held it with both hands, and aimed it at the giant rushing towards them.
The hairdryer-like thing was connected to the backpack behind him by a finger-thick tube. Susan recognized those things. Reed was holding her hairdryer, the tube was taken from the washing machine, and it was wrapped with a circle of black insulating sponge. As for the backpack, it seemed to be her Hermes bag.
"This is a freezing gun I made when I was building armor for Ben!" Reed explained. "Low temperature is the nemesis of most creatures, this should temporarily trap him."
Reed pressed the button on the hairdryer, and a cold blue beam shot out from the air outlet. Unfortunately, Reed's aim wasn't very good. Although he was aiming at the giant's head, the light hit the giant's feet.
Although Reed's aim wasn't good, his technology was beyond doubt. The moment the cold blue beam touched the giant, a layer of frost instantly appeared on the giant's ankle. The giant, insensitive to pain, stepped forward again regardless, but his ankle wouldn't allow him to do so.
"Crack!"
Like the sound of chewing potato chips, the giant's ankle couldn't withstand the force after being frozen and broke directly. Losing his support, the giant immediately fell face-first into the dirt.
"It worked!" Susan and the others were overjoyed.
