Chapter 1688: Leviathan

Chapter 1862 Chapter Leviathan

‘Okay, let’s take a look on Triton. After Zhao Zhongyao finished speaking, he drove the spaceship again and flew towards Triton's near surface.

Soon, they flew to an altitude of a few hundred meters from Triton. From this height, it was possible to see exactly what Triton's surface looked like.

Because Neptune is so far away from the sun, the temperature above Neptune’s moons is very low.

The temperature on Triton is basically around -235 degrees, which is a temperature close to absolute zero, almost the same as the temperature in interstellar space.

Because the surface temperature of Triton is very low, everything here is in a frozen state. The appearance of Triton is entirely a frozen world composed of solid nitrogen and other ice materials.

Looking at this frozen world, it feels like there can be no life here.

So Feifei looked at Zhao Zhongyao and said, ‘Dad, there is a world of ice and snow on Triton, will there be life in it! Could it be that the ninth amethyst gem we are looking for is not on this Triton at all. ’

At this time every day, I looked at Zhao Zhongyao and said, ‘Dad, I think we’d better look for it in another place! How could this Triton have life? ’

After hearing what Feifei and Tiantian said, Zhao Zhongyao smiled and said, “Don’t say that. Although the temperature on this Triton is very low, this Triton is very big. The place we see is just The tip of the iceberg. We don’t know what the rest of it looks like! ’

After speaking, Zhao Zhongyao flew the spacecraft towards Triton's equator.

Soon, the spacecraft brought Zhao Zhongyao and the others to a crater.

Feifei looked at this volcano on the ground and asked curiously, ‘Dad, is this a volcano! What's the use of our coming here. ’

At this time, Zhao Zhongyao said again, ‘I feel that the ninth amethyst gem we are looking for is in the melting lake near this volcanic crater. ’

Zhao Zhongyao already knew Triton very well, and he had already figured out where the ninth amethyst gem they were looking for would be in Triton.

‘Dad, why do you say that, do you have any basis? Feifei looked at Zhao Zhongyao incomprehensibly and said.

Tian Tian said incomprehensibly, ‘Dad, why do you say that, do you know this volcano well? ’

At this moment, Zhao Zhongyao looked at the two children again and said, ‘Of course, I still know this volcano very well. Let me tell you something about this volcano! ’

After speaking, Zhao Zhongyao told the two children some knowledge about the volcano.

This volcano is the largest volcano on Triton, and it is also an ice volcano.

Triton is geologically active, with a young surface and relatively few impact craters. Although Triton’s crust is composed of various ice materials, its underground process is similar to the process that produces volcanoes and rifts on the earth, but it is liquid rock that contrasts with water and ammonia.

The entire surface of Triton is cut by complex valleys and ridges, which may be the result of geological formation and ice volcanism. Most of the surface features on Triton are endogenous, which is the result of internal geological processes, rather than external processes (such as impacts).

And most of them are the result of volcanic eruption or natural eruption, not the result of geological structure. One of the largest ice volcanic features found on Triton is Leviathan, a feature similar to a caldera, which is about 100 kilometers in diameter near the equator of Triton.

The caldera is surrounded by a volcanic dome extending about 2,000 kilometers along its longest axis. Leviathan volcano is the second largest volcano in the solar system after Mount Abalt on Mars. This geological feature is also connected to two huge ice lava lakes seen in the northwest of the crater.

One of the smaller ice lava lakes is on the upper left of the picture on the right. Since it is believed that the ice lava on Triton is mainly water ice with a small amount of ammonia, these lakes will become stable surface liquid water bodies when they melt.

This is the place where such water bodies have been discovered for the first time besides the Earth. Among the known icy celestial bodies, only Triton has an ice lava lake, although it can also be used on Dia, Ganymede, Charon and Titan. See a similar phenomenon of ice lava.

The Voyager 2 probe observed a very small amount of geyser-like nitrogen eruption in 1989, and entrained dust under the surface of Triton, which was as high as 8 kilometers. Therefore, in the solar system, Triton and Earth, Europa, Europa and Enceladus are among the few celestial bodies that have observed some form of active eruption.

The easiest geyser eruption is that all the geysers observed are located between 50° and 57° south latitude, that is, the area on the surface of Triton which is directly exposed to sunlight.

This shows that although sunlight heating is very weak in Triton, which is very far away from the sun, it plays a vital role. It is believed that Triton’s surface may consist of a translucent layer of nitrogen ice covering a darker substrate, creating a "solid greenhouse effect."

Solar radiation passes through the thin ice sheet, slowly heating and evaporating the nitrogen ice in the ground, until enough air pressure has accumulated to erupt through the ice shell. As long as the temperature is only 4K higher than the surrounding surface temperature of 37K, an eruption reaching the height observed above will occur.

Although commonly referred to as "ice volcanoes", this nitrogen plume activity is different from the larger-scale low-temperature volcanic eruptions on Triton and other volcanic processes driven by internal heat in other celestial bodies. Scientists believe that in the spring of each Martian year, carbon dioxide geysers on Mars will eject from the Antarctic ice cap in the same way as Triton geysers.

Each geyser eruption of Triton can last for up to a year, during which time, about 100 million cubic meters of nitrogen ice will erupt due to sublimation. Fugitive dust may be deposited in visible streaks 150 kilometers downwind, and more dispersed deposits may even drift further.

After Zhao Zhongyao told the two children about the Leviathan volcano, he said, ‘Do you think there is a melting lake around this ice volcano that we are looking for! "Feifei nodded after hearing what my dad said, "it should be!" ’

At this time every day, he said happily, ‘Dad, what are we waiting for, hurry to the melting lake. ’

‘Okay, let’s go down and have a look, maybe we will be able to find the ninth amethyst gem we are looking for soon. Zhao Zhongyao also said happily.

After speaking, Zhao Zhongyao drove the spacecraft and flew to the vicinity of Leviathan Volcano.

Soon, they flew over this ice volcano, and their spacecraft was only a few hundred meters away from the crater of this ice volcano. From this height, they could clearly see the entire Leviathan crater.

This is a huge volcano with a diameter of one hundred kilometers. Only because it no longer erupts, a huge ice sheet has formed inside. Zhao Zhongyao piloted the spacecraft, lowered the altitude further, and then galloped over this huge ice sheet.

The crater of a hundred kilometers is a huge basin. The spacecraft was flying inside, like a mosquito flying in a huge basin, which seemed insignificant.

What Zhao Zhongyao and the others saw was that the following situation was a pure white frozen world, without any signs of life. You can't even see a liquid lake. If you can see a liquid lake, you can imagine the movement of life.
