Stupid Odin
#121 - rumor
Odin's plan was doomed to fail.
When Downs ordered Heimdall, the guardian of the Rainbow Bridge, to disregard other small worlds and even delegated his monitoring duties to the bow god Ullr, the Asgardian's all-seeing eyes focused solely on Jotunheim.
With so many giants, it was impossible for them not to hunt or eat. As soon as they emerged from their ice-covered lairs, Heimdall could easily spot them.
To discover is to eliminate!
Odin watched with a mix of shock and anger as the rainbow light intermittently pierced into the world of Jotunheim, a sign that Thor and his companions were slaying wave after wave of frost giant rebels.
Thor was having a blast!
A 15-meter-tall giant roared as he charged, but Thor simply transformed to match his size.
With a suave sidestep to the left, Thor dodged the giant's stone axe, then angled his Mjolnir to strike the side of the axe blade.
"Crack!"
The sound was so crisp, it almost resembled cracking an eggshell.
Thor, with his superhuman muscular strength, didn't stop there. The Thunder Hammer continued its devastating path, even grinding the shattered stone axe fragments into the giant's ugly face, causing a bright spray of blood, before smashing the giant to the ground and obliterating his head.
The Warriors Three of Asgard, however, employed tactics full of skill. Volstagg shattered a giant's left shinbone with a hammer blow. Then, Hogun drew the giant's attention, allowing Fandral to leap onto the giant's knee and deliver the final blow to his neck.
As for the Valkyries, they rode winged steeds, using various high-altitude dives to attract the giants' attention, allowing their teammates to deliver a fatal blow.
The entire battle process was a spectacle to behold, but when Odin's raven, Muninn, told him about it, he became much more distressed.
At this rate, in less than half a month, Odin's hidden giant pawns in Jotunheim would be uprooted.
This small clan of only twenty or so giants was precisely the situation where Thor's individual combat strength was most effective.
No matter how many giants Odin secretly released, as long as the number of giants in the clan did not exceed a thousand, they would not be able to form an overwhelming advantage that would deter Thor from acting rashly.
Even more infuriating, Odin received news that Downs was actually having the giantess Skadi attempt to master the divine authority of the "North Wind"! Although this was a wind element-based divine authority, there was no doubt that it overlapped with Odin's control of the "Winter" divine authority in certain aspects.
Without the North Wind, the power of all cold currents would be greatly reduced.
When things were normal, Skadi could, of course, coexist harmoniously with Odin.
But if Odin were to cause trouble, this natural enemy could compete with Odin on the divine power level, greatly interfering with his acquisition of divine power.
Odin felt like Downs had put him in check.
… …
In the great hall, with no one else present, Odin unceremoniously grabbed Mimir's head and shook it incessantly: "Hey! Old man, your method isn't working!"
Mimir was shaken until he felt dizzy.
"My lord, the way to create greater chaos lies not in my advice, but in what you think and how you act!"
Odin understood.
He needed to spread chaos!
Only widespread chaos could cause the collapse of order, shaking the foundation of his elder brother's rule.
Relatively speaking, he also had a considerable chance of overplaying his hand.
If the entire Jötunheimr world were to become a paradise of chaos, then the world might be full of those multi-headed monster giants. At that time, even if Odin were to seize the throne of the God-King, would such a world be worth ruling?
Odin hesitated, a rare occurrence for him.
In less than a week, the Dark Elves revolted.
They hoped to obtain half of Svartalfheim as their territory to establish their own empire. The dwarves and gnomes, of course, refused, and they immediately started fighting in this dim underground world, even refusing to accept the Valkyries' mediation.
Up to this point, things were still manageable, after all, the war was limited to the mortal realm.
However, a few days later, a very pointed rumor spread throughout Asgard.
"Have you heard? The God-King despises pure-blooded Asgardians. He will never marry a pure-blooded Asgardian goddess as his queen."
"The God-King is just a barbarian; he prefers those crude giantesses."
"Among the divine children, those with giant blood make up the majority."
This rumor rarely put Downs in a passive position.
He used Thor's sincerity to break Odin's conspiracy and used Skadi to warn Odin.
Clearly, this foolish younger brother did not intend to stop and would fight to the end.
The reason why rumors can spread is that they have some truth as their foundation.
Indeed, very few pure-blooded Asgardians can climb to high positions in Asgard. The simplest example: no pure-blooded Asgardian is even the king of a small world. In contrast, the Vanir god Freyr can control Alfheim.
Even many Asgardians know that this is Downs' move to completely absorb the Vanir.
This does not mean that they have no opinions, no envy, jealousy, or hatred!
Even Frigg approached Downs to test his opinion.
Downs could only remain silent.
Most ⊥ New ⊥ Small ⊥ Says ⊥ In ⊥ Six ⊥ 9 ⊥ ⊥ Book ⊥ ⊥ Bar ⊥ ⊥ First ⊥ Hair!
Many times, silence itself is an answer.
From another perspective, Downs is also unkind. He has had so many children but has not established a queen.
The pure-blooded Asgardians' desire for power is destined to be unfulfilled.
Firstly, pure-blooded gods generally lack talent.
Secondly, none of them are good fighters.
Half of the Asgardians rely on the golden apples to maintain their youth and beauty. How could Downs possibly entrust important tasks to these guys?
Downs' silence has recently cast a shadow over the Hall of Merriment. Clearly, fewer Asgardians are coming to play.
Just then, another rumor spread.
"Have you heard? His Majesty, in order to completely annex the Vanir, is going to poison his third brother, Vili, to facilitate the seizure of power."
"Impossible, how could His Majesty be so cruel?!"
This rumor was indeed too outrageous; no giant believed it at all. If even the giants' wisdom did not believe it, let alone the Asgardians.
Rumors, sometimes, first raise the threshold, and then fabricate a rumor that sounds more reasonable to gain everyone's trust.
The latest version of the rumor is: "His Majesty the God-King is going to marry Freyja as his queen!"
This news completely blew up Asgard.
The pure-blooded Asgardians were the first to object—Freyja, a mere Vanir god, with a low status in the divine realm, why should she be the queen?
But Freyja was the first to believe this rumor.
She dressed up gaudily and ran to the Silver Palace, a scene many Asgardians witnessed with their own eyes.
Even though Downs rarely kicked Freyja out, he still couldn't stop the spread of the rumor.
To be honest, as long as Downs does not establish a queen, these rumors will not stop.
In the Silver Palace, Downs' eyes were sharp, piercing through space, landing on Odin's face in Jotunheim.
"My foolish brother! Your actions may seem a little clever, but you've annoyed me. Do you know, you stinky brother, that what you can't win on the battlefield, you should never expect to get at the negotiating table."
