[The Chronicles of Narnia] Sin
Chapter 13
After leaving the White Witch's castle for many years, Edmund set foot on this cold and damp land again.Everything was still as it was in memory, bleak, dilapidated, wrapped in eternal ice.
"Are you sure that the way to break the spell is here?" Edith's voice hesitated behind her.
"No." He didn't look back, and continued to grope forward slowly, "but we have no other choice."
Gray-green smoke filled the hard and cold ground, and a faint ray of light in the depths of the castle supported his steps to continue moving forward.
He passed the ice and snow throne of Jandis seven years ago, feeling the remnants of the aura on it; and the side door with the iron fence next to it, the place where he was once imprisoned.Wolf Guard Captain Mao Green, iron chain, dry bread, black dwarf, Mr. Tumnus, petrified fox... too many details seem to have a real touch, and they gradually come to life.
"My past is sealed here," he said to Edith.
"Have you been caught by Jandis?"
Edmund smiled wryly and shook his head: "No... I came here by myself."
……
Perhaps in order to overcome fear, Edmund told Edith the adventure story about betrayal, loyalty, family affection, and faith seven years ago in detail. He spoke slowly and calmly, as if he were a bystander; but Edith was deeply affected by his story-it was with a unique Edmund rebellious mood, which she could fully understand perspective.Who didn't have a childhood love of candy and a unique sense of identity? When she was 12 years old, she was hunting and robbing merchant ships for chocolate.
"That was all seven years ago. And you were only ten years old at that time - there is nothing to feel guilty about." Edith comforted softly.
"Accurately speaking, that shouldn't be called guilt..." Edmund continued to walk towards the deepest part of the castle, "I just can't forget this experience—it is a good medicine for returning the blood to the body of a critically ill patient, and it is also the reason why I became Before the 'King of Justice' and the 'Knights of the Stone Table', the supreme trial must be passed."
It feels good to reveal all these past events that have been piled up in his heart for a long time, and even he once thought he had forgotten them; it is like a cup of emergency cold drink when the mouth is dry in summer, or the first time he emerged from the water while diving. Take a breath.
"Do you know why my code name is 'Phoenix'?" He stopped at the end of the castle, and his sentence paused slightly.
"—Because it means that I have been reborn from the ashes."
Edith followed his words and stopped, only then did she notice the scene in front of her——
In front of the black-haired young man stood a wand half inserted into the high ice: dim blue light bubbling from the ground, continuously delivering energy to the tip of the wand through the base of the ice seat.A ray of warm-toned light from the skylight of the castle hit the side of the broken wand, making it cast a dark and menacing shadow on the ice.
She suddenly realized the lonely, cold, and breathtaking temptation.Jantis's body is obviously dead, but her remaining and damaged soul is so powerful that it is enough to support an unknown witch to cast spells many times seven years later.
"This should be the source of the witch's power." Edmund slowly drew out the sword, his eyes nervously staring at the half of the wand emitting blue light. "Blame me for underestimating its power."
The point of the sword hovers in the air, waiting for its master to chop the evil force into pieces. But suddenly, in the lonely deep palace, there was a faint call:
"Are you sure you want to destroy it? Mortals with mediocre lives..."
"Who's there!" Edmund raised his sword higher and looked around nervously.
"I can't judge its direction at all." Edith also drew out her weapon, circling the unknown enemy at her feet.
"Hahahaha..." The voice smiled softly and evilly, constantly harassing the eardrums of the two from all directions.
"Don't hesitate, Edmund!" Edith shouted decisively.
The Justice King settled down, and once again pointed his sword at the evil thing——
After a few crisp slashes, the condensed blue light quickly dissipated, and the remaining fragments of the wand were slapped on the ice surface messily by the airflow generated by the magic explosion.
Edmund and Edith were also blown far away by the powerful thrust when the magic power disappeared.King Justice got up first, and stretched out his palm to Edith who was sitting on the ground: "Comeon, we have to go back to the village quickly."
The small village on the northwest border has restored its former peaceful scene. The old tree god Dura Simon no longer had to quarrel with his stubborn daughter; the red dwarf Mills and his wife got back together and walked happily by the stream together. And, of course, there's Edmund -- no need to use his over-the-top, clumsy acting.
But what both Edith regretted was the witch who stole the wand; the moment she found out that the magic had been broken, she packed up her belongings and fled away.Whether the remaining half of the wand in her hand will continue to serve as Funarnia, no one knows.
But no matter how you say it, this funny and thrilling mission finally came to an end.
"It's an honor to hear the most cherished story of the Justice King." Edith's voice was mixed with the whistling wind of the galloping horse.
"If you dare to tell others about my story and my pretending to be cursed—" King Justice said viciously, "you will die."
Edith couldn't hold back her laughter on the horseback, and the sound of giggling spread far in the forest.
King Justice glared at her side, forcing her to restrain herself in time: "Obey, Your Majesty the 'Phoenix' who is on fire."
·
Terrace of Cair Paravel Castle at dusk.
"You are indeed here, Princess Sharon."
The black-haired beauty looking from a distance turned her head: "Supreme King? What made you come here."
"I've come to remind you . . . for the best of both Tribenzia and Narnia to put those thoughts to rest for a moment."
Sharon stared at the tall and majestic blond young man in front of her, and shook her head helplessly: "I'm already trying—otherwise why would I stand here alone blowing the cold wind?"
"You can't beat Pedro." The Supreme King thoughtfully put on his own cloak for the lady, while uttering a cold statement, "I don't even think he will let you go."
Looking closer, the princess's face, which is under 20 years old, is still a little immature, with a few faint freckles on her round and fair cheeks, but the hatred and sadness between her brows are not commensurate with her age.Peter couldn't help but think of his sister Susan, who was the same age as her - she was obviously much happier than Sharon.
"I don't have any brothers or sisters." The princess said calmly, "Now my mother and queen died of illness, and my father was murdered... I have nothing to worry about. Tribinia has one less than me, and one more than me is not many."
"That's not the reason for you to die for no reason." The Supreme King said patiently to her, "Are you worthy of the loyal righteous who fought to protect you on board? All of them...they all want you to live."
"Pedro won't let me go, will he?" Sharon raised her head and questioned him again. "I can't stay in Narnia forever without a name. If you don't want me to send troops in full view , then at least secretly send someone to help me—”
"That way even if I fail, I can die without regret."
The Supreme King became uncontrollably irritable.
"It's not the best time - well maybe you can't see it, but the Justice King, me, even the Gentle Queen... we all know that."
"Narnia will allow you to stay, at least for a short time. Wait till your sorrow subsides, and then go and see what the situation is like. That's all I can say."
Peter turned around to walk down the city wall, but was stopped by Sharon again.
"Wait," she said with a strange look, with an indescribable light in her eyes. "If I could become a member of the royal family of Narnia . . . would you be willing and obliged to help me?"
Peter never expected that Sharon's scheming was so deep. She was after Edmund, his underage 17-year-old brother.
"You can give it a try." He said so, but a deep haze gathered on his face with his back to the girl.
·
The justice king who finished the mission from the northwest border is back.
He calmly jumped off the horse and straightened the slightly messy saddle.
"Pete? The sun's out in the west! I thought you'd be dying for your annoying brother to die out there - how would you even think of coming to meet me?"
The Supreme King in dark blue robes folded his arms and walked down the steps of the palace.
"I have something to tell you." He patted Edmund on the shoulder and motioned him to come with him.
King Justice had no choice but to hand over the reins to the servant who was waiting at the side, and told him to take care of Philip, then shook his head and followed the footsteps of the blond young man in front of him.
"What, Sharon?" Edmund looked at his brother suspiciously, "What can she do to me, we often don't see each other for three days in a row!"
Peter looked a little hesitant, and in the end he didn't tell everything.
"You just need to be careful, don't get too close to her." There was a very secret melancholy in his beautiful blue eyes.
Edmund, who was ignorant of everything, looked indifferent. "Hey, isn't it Peter..." His dark brown eyes moved brightly, and his eyebrows were dancing, "You really treat her..."
He raised his finger to point out something, but finally hesitated to speak, and got up in a hurry.
"Don't worry, I won't tell others, and I won't fight with you—"
The misunderstood Supreme King froze on the chair in the lounge with a complex expression, not knowing whether to be happy or sad.
·
Tribenzia, the king's bedchamber.
"You said that Sharon is living in the palace of Narnia and planning revenge?" Pedro said quietly on the couch with his eyes half closed.
"It is true, Your Majesty."
"I said at the beginning that I must take advantage of the chaos to get rid of her... Now you are the one who left me trouble." The man's expression was as lazy as usual, but his tone made his close ministers chill.
"It is impossible for us to go to Narnia without a reason. It will be regarded as an invasion by Peter the Great; moreover, our military strength is definitely not the opponent of Narnia." The minister cautiously tried.
"Then," Pedro's drowsy eyes suddenly widened, and the blade-sharp ferocity in them made even his confidants who were familiar with him tremble twice, "create a reason...or hide your identity."
"—Before the first snowflakes fall in winter, I want to see Sharon's body lying on the main hall of Cair Paravel Palace."
The author has something to say: a small note: the phoenix on fire is a metaphor for myths and legends, and a pun on Edmund's annoyance. In fact, there are many small details hidden in the dialogue, it is very interesting to read carefully~
