[CM] THE CASE

Chapter 34

Between desire and emotional outburst, between potential and existence, between spirit and inheritance, there is always a shadow. This is how the world ends. — Elliott

Sitting in the interrogation room for the second time, Nathan felt an inexplicable sense of peace.

He was in the church for four hours without a single person noticing him.The church is as quiet as a holy place, as if all the filth and filth in the world can be purified. He doesn't believe in God, but he also feels that the devil is imprisoned in his heart, so he has a paradoxical awe for this sacred place.

No one knew what the teenager was thinking for four hours, but Griffith caught a glimpse of determination in Nathan's half-closed eyes.He stood in the monitoring room for a while, explained a few words to his colleagues at work, and then pushed the door open.

Half an hour ago, they ruled out the possibility of Nathan committing the crime again, and the boss decided to issue a statement in spite of Mr. Steyer's warning.Although JJ expressed a certain excitement that he could do it anytime, but it takes time to organize the manpower, so the press conference was scheduled until the next morning.

At this point, the boulder that weighed on everyone's hearts since receiving the case was lifted slightly.

Startled by the sound of the door opening, Nathan looked up in panic and saw Griffith. His whole body was stiff, as if a small movement of raising his eyes took so much effort. When Griffith slammed the door behind him, the teenager's shoulders jerked back.

Griffith didn't expect to be able to scare people like this, so he was stunned. Then, he still chose to keep his "black face" status and sat down opposite Nathan.

Nathan waited for a while before he could speak, and gave Griffith a strange look.

Like Reid, Griffith has a subtle resonance with Nathan. It may have originated from Reid's "fear of your own thoughts" that afternoon.

He had never seen his fears so precisely and clearly that the things that kept him up at night seemed less hideous.

Reid had helped him without knowing it, and now he wanted to help Nathan too.

"I'm afraid you're going to spend the night here tonight," Griffith said. "Do you want me to get you the quilt?"

Nathan was so scared by Griffith that he didn't dare to breathe before, but suddenly he was treated so gently, and he couldn't turn his head for a while: "Oh... okay."

Griffith went out and asked for a quilt and came back. When he sat down again, Nathan hugged the quilt and said hesitantly, "...Thank you."

Seeing that his tense back relaxed a little, Griffith joked, "Don't be afraid, I don't eat people."

Nathan smiled miserably.

"I've come to tell you that you don't have to be afraid of yourself. It's up to you to decide who you want to be and who you will be."

Nathan's grip on the quilt loosened a little.

"Your mother said you were a good boy, and I thought so too. Don't let her down."

Nathan didn't respond, but Griffith knew he was listening, so he left the interrogation room without saying a word.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Harris was sitting outside the interrogation room, holding a cup of cold Americano in despair. Gideon sat beside her in silence, waiting for Mrs. Harris to speak.

In the morning, the woman who strongly stated that she would never let Nathan go to the hospital looked haggard. Emily saw her mismatched shoes from a distance and knew she was about to collapse. Reid bumped Emily lightly and asked, "Go back?"

Emily then withdrew her attention and smiled at Reid: "Well, right away."

"Do you take the subway?"

"No, I'm driving."

Reid let out an oh, a little envious: "That's great."

"Why, you don't have a car?"

"No, it's too expensive." Reid began to calculate the cost of maintaining the car, and finally concluded, "These can buy another car."

His overly gifted calculation ability made Emily feel pain for no reason: "Yes, it's really expensive to buy a car."

Morgan on the side couldn't listen: "Forget it, Reid, you don't need money."

Emily looked at Reid suspiciously, but Reid nodded calmly: "Yes."

Garcia who passed by laughed loudly: "Dear Emily, don't be fooled by Reid. He is very rich, and smart people have money, right baby?"

Reid hastily explained: "No, I just have enough money."

Morgan then joked: "Because the extra money has been turned into books, your family must have a lot of books."

Griffith, who came back to pack his things, happened to catch the last sentence, so he answered naturally, "That's right, the bookcases on the entire wall of his house can't fit."

Several people were silent in unison.

Griffith zipped up his bag, not realizing the problem: "What's wrong?"

Morgan was surprised: "Have you been to his house?"

Griffith didn't think there was anything new, so he was puzzled by Morgan's fuss: "Yeah."

Then Morgan grabbed Reid's neck and said through gritted teeth, "You never invited me to your house, boy!"

Reid struggled desperately: "What are you doing at my house? You will only take me to the bar!"

Morgan feigned anger: "You heartless guy! I'm helping you!"

The squabble between them was a bit loud, Gideon glanced at it unpleasantly, and was sensitively caught by Garcia, who quickly separated the two: "Stop making trouble, Gideon looked this way!"

The group had no choice but to stop, and went back to their respective homes in despair.

Mrs. Harris didn't know what she was thinking at first, but was startled by their fight. Gideon turned back and said helplessly to her: "Sorry, our team members are not stable enough."

"It's okay, they're still young, it's good to be so alive," Mrs. Harris said, "Nathan used to be...alive too."

Gideon is noncommittal: "Boys are very energetic when they are young."

Mrs. Harris didn't know what to think, her eyes were a little distracted. After a while, she mustered up her courage and turned to Gideon and asked, "You said last time that Nathan needs to be hospitalized...do you have any recommendations?"

Steyer slammed the remote when he saw Hotch on TV.She broke into the BAU with a gloomy face, but Hotch was very calm: "Member, good afternoon."

Steyer's eyes were burning. "Agent Hotchner, I hope you know what you're doing!"

Hotch was confident: "Yes, Congressman, please come with me, there are a few people I want you to meet."

Steyer followed Hotch's footsteps with a force that could gouge through the floor.

Griffith had just helped Garcia investigate the organization for Steyer's publicity and planning, his eyes were still sore, he looked up and saw Steyer, he belatedly asked JJ: "Does the congressman agree to openly investigate this case?"

JJ didn't even raise his head: "Yeah, she's going to announce that the crime rate in Washington has dropped. Isn't that a slap in the face? Here, sign here."

Griffith picked it up, looked at it, and signed his name: "Why, the handover of this case has not been completed yet?"

"This case was requested by Reid on his own initiative, and it does not conform to the normal process. Not to mention all the procedures need to be completed, and there may be inquiries after that..." JJ was also very helpless.

Griffith curled his lips: "It's so troublesome."

"Yeah." JJ sighed exhaustedly, "I originally wanted to buy you a holiday, but you had been suspended for such a long time before, so I had to push it back. Maybe you will have a long holiday for Christmas."

"Really?" Griffith was surprised.

"Fake, I'm not sure yet, I just plan to do so." JJ packed up the files and warned, "Don't say it, you know?"

Griffith nodded.

JJ strode away reassuringly, probably looking for someone else to sign. Not long after she left, Griffith saw Reid rush into Garcia's computer room.

Garcia was taken aback by him: "What are you doing?"

"Look up this man, Serious Guard Ronald Weems," Reid said. "He may be our prisoner."

Outside the computer room, Morgan came back with a report and two models. He threw it all at Griffith: "Forensics asked me to give it to you."

It is the model of the murder weapon requested by Griffith.

He guessed right, the murder weapon in the fourth case was the same as the first three. Griffith picked up the model blade and observed carefully: "This seems to be an ordinary fruit knife."

"Small in size and easy to carry, I guess he hid it directly on his body." Morgan leaned on the chair and turned half a circle.

"Well, it's not easy to arouse vigilance."

"He needs a coat, the pockets of the jacket are not deep enough."

"A black overcoat," Griffith added, "if he decides to commit a crime at night, black is the most understated."

"It's going to be cold out here," Morgan said. "He's bald, so he's definitely wearing a hat."

"For the purpose of keeping warm, he should wear a fleece hat, also black." Before Griffith finished speaking, Reid ran out in a hurry: "Found Ronald Weems' address."

Hotch came down from the second floor: "Contact the DCPD, Morgan, Gideon and I will go to Ronald Weems' house, and the others will go to the street, understand?"

"Yes, sir."

Reid grabbed the landline on Griffith's desk and called the contact person. Griffith put on his coat and walked a step ahead with Emily.

However, when Gideon and the others arrived at Ronald Weems' house, he had already left.

Those on guard on the street felt chills when they got the news.Time was running out, so we had to return to the most primitive method.

Griffith asked people around with a photo of Ronald Weems, describing his appearance over and over again. But who would have an impression of a passerby on the road?

Across the crowd, Emily shook her head at him.

Morgan walked through the messy alleys and greeted his brother at the police station. The intercom on his body sounded a "hissing" electric current, but there was no news.

Until a sharp whistle pierced the night.

After the dust settled, Griffith tucked the pistol back into his lower back. Reid came a step later, only to see the police car carrying the suspect drive away.

"Go back," Gideon said. "Go back and release Nathan Harris. His mother has arranged for him to be hospitalized. Everything will be fine."

But Griffith always had a sense of foreboding. It made him look listless and Hotch thought he was too tired and asked him to go to bed early.

It wasn't until Griffith got a call on the doorstep that he realized what that premonition was.

He reported the address as he hopped into the taxi, giving the driver no time to complain. He pinched himself hard.

Nathan's eyes. He'd seen that kind of determination, in Sally's eyes.
