Although "Royal Purple" has become a symbol of wealth for the kings, grandsons and nobles, the extraction process of this dye is not just a "disgusting" description at all. From 25 dyed snails, only half an ounce of dye can be extracted, just enough to dye a Roman robe. The whole process of extracting the dye is so foul that the work can only be done outside the city.In Finley's book, the stench is hard to get rid of even after it's been made into clothing:

"Rotten dye snails are soaked in a mixture of stinky urine and water, along with wood ash. These purple vats can only be placed outside the city, because people will be smoked to death if they stand by. Dye-colored clothes had a unique smell of fish and the sea. The Roman historian Pliny said it was 'unpleasant', but other Romans smelled money."
