Chapter 6 Her Majesty and the Court
Three days later I boarded the HMS Conqueror, accompanied by my family, Mr Gillette and Colonel Lyttington, with my father's handwritten letter and presents to the Queen. After a month of stormy weather we reached the port of London.
Afterwards, after a day's rest at the Marquess of Alby, accompanied by the Colonel, Mrs. Alby and Anna, I entered the palace to see Queen Anne.Queen Anne is old and silver-haired, but extremely dignified and dignified; when she heard that I came all the way from Port Royal in the Caribbean, her deep blue eyes immediately showed a gentle and kind look.
After the banquet, she asked several questions about the port, and I answered them as best I could. It was evident that the Queen was more than satisfied with my remarks, and leaving Colonel Lyttington and me after supper, she asked about the defenses of Port Royal and the power of pirates there.
Then, the queen said very kindly: "Miss Swan, your father used to be the most powerful official under the husband of the king. I have always had a good impression of him. You brought me greetings from an old friend and a rare gift from the Caribbean. I hope you will not refuse me a small gift in return for you and your father."
After that, she reached out to ring the bell, and the court lady brought two documents tied with ribbons. She handed me the paperwork, and another maid brought a long shiny silver platter with a long sword and a medal on it.
The queen said in her old and elegant voice: "Please take these two gifts back, and tell your father the queen and the country to thank him for his contribution. Your father's award ceremony will be held by you and the colonel, but your title It’s still up to me to grant it, you won’t object.”
I gratefully accepted, and on my way out of the palace, I became the eldest daughter of the Earl of Merrill, and Lady of Wilworthy. The Queen generously gave Port Royal and the six surrounding islands my father's fiefdom. As for me, the Queen gave me a false title, but the grace she bestowed on me cannot be underestimated.
That night, the queen held a grand ball in the palace.
I was introduced to the princess dame as the eldest daughter of the Earl of Merrill, and was introduced into high society by the Queen and the Marchioness.Undoubtedly, it was a supreme favor, as confirmed by the favor I received on the day of the ball and later in society.
After a month in London, Madame hinted that I might propose a journey home.I went to the palace to have an audience and raised the matter tactfully, and the Queen agreed after hesitating for a moment. But she asked me to write her a letter every month, informing her of what was going on in Port Royal; I obliged with great joy, and again conveyed my father's gratitude and faithfulness.
At the time of parting, the Queen was unable to come because she was unwell, so she asked a prince of the royal family, her cousin William, to accompany Mrs. Alby and others to see us off.
Parting is always sad.
I asked Prince William to once again convey my deep gratitude and respect to Her Majesty the Queen, and expressed my heartfelt thanks for the hospitality I have received this month, and bid farewell to everyone in tears (and hugged Anna Alby with red eyes), and finally Escorted by Gillette and Littington aboard the original "Conqueror" and waved from the side of the ship.
Unexpectedly, the wind and the waves were unpredictable. Because of two terrible storms on the way back, we were delayed for two and a half months before returning to Port Royal.
