Chapter 26 Dementors
Esther is very helpless about the vacation homework that has been enriched all at once.It took her four days to check the books and sort out the materials before she sorted out an outline.
After dinner, Esther went out for a walk.Writing at the desk every day made her feel sore in her back.Walking under the moonlight, the quiet street, and the cool evening breeze made Esther feel very comfortable.Suddenly there was a barking of dogs, followed by loud noises. The sound was not far away, and Esther hesitated whether to go and have a look. There was a sound of luggage being dragged towards her, and she narrowed her eyes nervously. The oncoming figure came under the light, and Esther finally saw the other person's face clearly, it was Harry. She breathed a sigh of relief.
"Where are you going?" Esther asked suspiciously.
"Can I hide at your house? I've blown my aunt up, and the Ministry of Magic is coming to arrest me!" Harry said in a panic.
"Of course, but calm down. Maybe it's not that bad." Esther took Hedwig's cage and prepared to go home with Harry.
"You don't know, last year..." Harry stopped talking suddenly, staring blankly in the direction of the bushes.
"What's the matter, Harry?" Esther waited for a while to realize that Harry hadn't followed. He followed his gaze and saw nothing. "What's there?"
"No—nothing, just blurred vision," said Harry vaguely.
"Then let's go quickly. People from the Ministry of Magic may be here soon. Sirius Black has escaped from prison. They are hunting around. It is said that they have sent dementors. Maybe there will be wizards nearby. We Let's go back first." Esther urged Harry to quicken his pace.
"Blake? I heard that name on the news!" said Harry in surprise.
"Yes, they also informed the Muggles. This is normal, because he once bombed a street and killed thirteen people, most of them were Muggles." Esther recalled Lupine's words, as if that meant it.
"That's terrible!" said Harry, "but why did he kill people?"
"Because—" Ace gave Harry a hesitant look. She didn't know if she should tell him about it, or if she should tell it.
"Because of what?" Harry looked at Esther suspiciously, wondering why she stopped talking.
Esther thought about it, and found a vague explanation, "Maybe it's because he's a Death Eater."
"He's a Death Eater? You mean he's Voldemort's man?" Harry's attention was completely shifted to Black's news, and he completely forgot about the panic just now.
"Yeah, so don't let him see you, maybe he escaped this time to kill you for Voldemort." Esther speculated wildly based on Lupine's words.
Esther led Harry into the house, and Aunt Connie was watching TV.
"Auntie, can Harry stay with us for a few days?" Esther asked.
"Of course, what happened?" Aunt Connie asked worriedly.
"Harry's magic was out of control, and there was a little accident. He was afraid that the Ministry of Magic would arrest him." Esther answered this awkward question for Harry.
"You're so nervous, kid. I don't think even the wizarding law can accuse you of an accident, can you?" Aunt Connie comforted him. "I'll get you a glass of milk. Esther, put the bedroom next to you Pack it up and help Harry move things up."
After working for a long time, Harry was finally settled.Esther and Harry discuss who they need to contact.
"I can't think of anyone, both Hermione and Ron are abroad," Harry said awkwardly.
"Maybe we should ask Professor Dumbledore, we all know that he accepted Hagrid, he will always have a way, right? Or he will tell us it's nothing, just like Aunt Connie said." Ai Ster suggested.
"Maybe you're right." Harry seemed hopeful again.
Esther handed Harry the letter paper and quill, when the window rang, and a snow-white owl was looking inside.
"Hedwig!" Harry finally felt happy again, he ran over to take Hedwig in, and the snowy owl rubbed against him affectionately.
"You came just in time, I need your help to deliver a letter." Harry said to Hedwig.
"Give her a break, Lucinda's quick too," Esther said.
Esther and Harry each wrote a letter to Lucinda to deliver to Dumbledore overnight.Harry anxiously awaited his fate.Esther was also infected by his emotions and could no longer write the paper.Aunt Connie went back to the room to rest first, leaving only Harry and Esther sitting on the sofa playing with their fingers boredly.
It was midnight, and the two of them had no intention of going to bed.Suddenly a red light flashed, and a letter with phoenix feathers floated down in front of Harry and Esther. They looked at each other and decided that Harry would open it.
Harry unfolded the letter and read it quickly. He became more and more relaxed and finally breathed a sigh of relief, handing the letter to Esther.
The letter was from Dumbledore, to the effect that matters with the Dursleys had settled down, and Harry would not accept any punishment. He could stay at Esther's for the rest of the vacation, but try not to go out.If you have to go out, do it with Esther too.
"It's all right now, there's nothing wrong with it." Esther was happy for Harry.
"Yeah, that's great!" Harry said happily, but his stomach rumbled inappropriately.
"It seems that we should have some bread and sausage to celebrate." Esther raised his eyebrows looking at Harry's stomach, and went to the kitchen with a smile to pick out supper.
The rest of the vacation seemed to fly by so quickly.Doing homework every day, playing computer games, eating ice cream and watching TV is relaxing.Harry also received a letter from Ron, saying that they had returned to England and would go shopping in Diagon Alley on the last day of the holiday, inviting Harry to join them.So they pushed the trip to Diagon Alley to the last day.
Aunt Connie still chose to drive to London. As soon as he entered the Leaky Cauldron, he was greeted by a short, fat man in checked wizard robes, looking like a government official.Esther recognized him as the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, who often appeared in the Daily Prophet.Followed by the red-haired Mr. Weasley and a very prim Ron.It looks like they have been waiting for a long time.
"Seeing you at last, Harry," cried Fudge, patting Harry on the shoulder enthusiastically. "Albus just won't tell me where you are, except that you're safe. If I knew you were in a Muggle family," he glanced at Aunt Connie's attire, "I must have picked you up a long time ago. They can't guarantee your safety. By the way, I haven't introduced you yet. I'm the Minister of Magic, Connie. Nelly Fudge."
"I feel safe with them, Mr Minister, I'm not in any danger." Harry didn't like hearing Fudge say that about Esther and Aunt Connie.
"Come on, Harry, I know you're kind and willing to hurt yourself. But how about you staying at the Leaky Cauldron today, and your friend Ron lives here too, so you can be together. Is it Ron? asked Fudge not very concerned.
"It's Ron, Mr Minister," Mr Weasley corrected him.
"Oh, yes, yes, it's Ron, so will you, Harry? Live here today and you'll go to the train station tomorrow?" Fudge asked eagerly.
Harry hesitated, seeing that he was eager to live with Ron, but felt that he should go back with Esther.
"Of course you can stay, Harry, I can send your luggage over here. I don't think Professor Dumbledore would object to you being with Mr. Weasley." Esther followed Fudge's words very practically. .
Fudge nodded to Esther with satisfaction, waiting for Harry's reply.
Harry finally agreed to stay, and Tom, the bar owner, gave him a key to Room 11 so that he could go in directly after shopping.
Separated from Harry, Esther first went to the owl post office to write a note to Dumbledore, telling him about meeting Fudge and the arrangements for Harry to stay at the Leaky Cauldron. Then, with Aunt Connie, she prepared to buy supplies for next semester.
Esther didn't have much to buy, just a robe and a few textbooks. She didn't grow very long in the past two years, and she always wore the third-grade gown. But this year, she seemed to have drank a heightening potion, and she jumped up a lot at once.
After buying a robe, she compared the list of selected textbooks for advanced classes to select books that she didn't have at home.Except for the book "The Monster Book of Monsters" for the protection of magical creatures class, there are others. She decided to take one more Care of Magical Creatures class than the healer required, many potions required something from magical animals, and learning a little more about their habits would always help.
The bookstore was extremely busy, and when the clerks heard that they were here to buy "Monster Books of Monsters", they all looked bitter and wanted to cry.Esther looked at the fighting book in the cage and found it very interesting. It might be good to keep as a pet.She found a cage and asked the clerk to put the books in the cage for him. "The Monster Book of Monsters" rattled fiercely at Esther.
Esther went home and packed Harry's things and prepared to send them back to him.Aunt Connie offered to drive her, but Esther refused. My aunt is getting old, and she doesn't want to make her too tired.Esther finally chose to go by train. She doesn't want to experience the Knight Bus again unless she has to.
The next day Esther came to the train station and went to the prefect's car to find Orion and Leona. They were already eating licorice sticks in the prefect's car.Seeing Esther's cage, Orion frowned and said, "Why did you choose such a thing as a pet?"
"I want to take the Care of Magical Beasts class." Esther said bluntly.
"Why didn't you tell me in the letter? I wasn't even prepared." Leona said dissatisfied.
"I didn't plan to take you together. It's just a personal hobby. This time, the course selection should be based on the future employment direction. You don't need to learn this." Este said.
Leona was still a little confused. She teased the "Monster Book of Monsters" with her hand, and was almost bitten by the book. "You're right, I don't need to take this course." Leona said decisively.
The train was running on the rails, making rhythmic noises. This year's Girls' Council President was very accommodating and didn't take too long to speak.Orion is very miserable. The male chairman is a boy from the Weasley family, named Percy. He gave them a speech for an hour or so in a serious, bureaucratic tone. When Orion came back, both Esther and Leona had already finished eating the second piece of Crucible Cake.
Esther and the others took turns patrolling the car after lunch to perform their duties as prefects. As the train headed north, the sky became more and more gloomy, and it began to rain gradually. The scenery outside the car window was obscured by the rain, and the wind howled.
"I've never encountered such bad weather before." Leona looked out the window worriedly.
The weather was getting worse and worse, but the train started to slow down. "Shouldn't we be there yet?" Orion became alert.
"I'll go and see what's going on, the prefects go to each compartment to maintain order." Percy ordered.
Esther had no choice but to separate from Leona and the others, and walked to the back of the carriage by herself. When the train finally stopped, everyone stepped out to see what was going on.
"Sit back, and everyone sit back in their own boxes." Esther yelled, "The student chairman has already checked the situation, and they are all sitting in the car and waiting for news. Don't wander around."
A freezing chill hit, and the surroundings became pitch black.Suddenly, a trembling light came out from a carriage in front, and through the light, Esther saw a tall figure in a black cloak that almost reached the roof of the carriage. The cloak was tightly covered, only revealing a Gray and white eerie rotting hands.
Esther felt like he was about to stop breathing, and a cold despair came from the bottom of his heart. She suddenly understood what it was—a dementor. She had learned it before, but she didn't expect it to feel like this. She finally understood what Azkaban meant. She concentrated on the smoke rising from the potion. "Call God to protect!" she yelled.
A silver bat flew out from the tip of the wand, heading straight for the black shadow. At this time, a mass of silver-white matter also poured out of the carriage, whose shape could not be seen clearly. The dementor was forced to leave quickly by the two Patronuses.Esther ran to that compartment to check, and a girl was screaming Harry's name.
Esther saw Harry lying on the ground twitching at a glance. She called the Patronus back and let it rush into Harry. The Patronus calmed Harry as soon as it touched him, and slowly Harry opened his green eyes, staring blankly at the faces before him.
"Harry, are you all right?" Hermione asked as she and Ron helped Harry back into the seat.
"I'm fine, what about that thing in the cloak just now? Who else was screaming?" Harry said, wiping his cold sweat.
"Nobody screaming," said Ron nervously.
"But I heard someone screaming, I wanted to help that person...but then it changed, it became playing computer games at your house..." Harry looked at Esther for help.
"That's great, I hope you cleared the level before you woke up just now." Esther pretended to be relaxed and teased.
"I didn't expect you to use the Patronus Charm like this. It's very creative." Professor Lupine said to Esther while handing out a large piece of chocolate to everyone.
"The Patronus Charm? Was that thing made by the Patronus Charm just now?" Harry asked while holding the chocolate.
"No, that's a dementor, a dementor from Azkaban. Eat it, it will help. Excuse me, I have to talk to the driver..." Lupine motioned to Esther to take care of her Harry, leave the box by yourself.
Apart from Harry, Hermione and Ron, Ginny and a boy named Longbottom were in the box.Everyone was talking about the situation just now, but Esther couldn't get in at all.
"I didn't put poison in that bar of chocolate," Lupine told them, smiling as he went back out of the carriage.
Esther greeted Lupine when he came back and left. She couldn't just guard this one compartment, the prefects had to check the situation in other compartments. She found Orion and Leona and went back to the box, dug out all their chocolates, and, like Lupin, distributed them to some students who were more frightened.
After another 10 minutes they finally arrived at the train station. It was raining heavily on the platform, and Esther put a water-repellent charm on the robes of the three of them. Then he rushed into the heavy rain to find a free carriage.
Esther separated from Leona at the entrance of the auditorium, went to sit at the long table in Slytherin, and Orion sat next to him to wait for the sorting ceremony. This year, Professor Flitwick presided over the sorting ceremony.Probably because they haven't slowed down yet, the freshmen are not energetic. The welcoming atmosphere for senior students was not as warm as in previous years.
Harry came in after the sorting ceremony, and there was a lot of talk at the Slytherin table that Harry had fainted from the dementors. After entering the school, Esther can no longer turn against the Slytherins in order to protect Harry. She could only keep them quiet on the grounds of maintaining order in the auditorium.
Speaking before the banquet, Professor Dumbledore told everyone that there will be dementors guarding the school this year, and asked the prefects and the president of the male and female student unions to ensure that the students will not conflict with this emotionless creature.Esther felt that after what happened on the train, no one would be stupid enough to make trouble in front of the dementor.
Professor Dumbledore also introduced the changes in the teaching staff.Esther was already familiar with Professor Lupine, but seeing Snape's reaction, Esther was still taken aback. He seemed to hate Lupine even more than he had in the summer, maybe the dementors were affecting his mood?Esther wasn't so sure.
Another professor who has changed is Professor Kettleburn from Care of Fantastic Beasts. He applied for retirement, and his successor was the well-known Rubeus Hagrid. After a short surprise, Esther felt that it was nothing. She heard Harry say that the eight-eyed spider in the Forbidden Forest was raised by Hagrid, and Esther always respected capable people.
After breakfast the next day, all the sixth grade students stayed and waited for Professor Snape to distribute the timetable for the new semester.
Professor Snape checked the OWLs scores of the students one by one, and only when the scores met the requirements could they be arranged to enter the NEWTs improvement class.
When it was Esther's turn, Snape looked at her application, frowned and said, "Charms, Potions, Herbalism, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Transfiguration are all fine. The Protection of Magical Creatures class is for you." What's the use? I remember your employment intention as a healer, not a magizoologist."
"Understanding the habits of medicinal organisms is convenient for capturing and processing." Este said concisely.
"The Ministry of Magic forbids the private killing of magical creatures to make medicines, and pharmacies will sell any materials. What's more, you will become a healer in the future, and you still worry about not having enough medicines?" Professor Snape was not convinced.
"Some rare medicinal materials are very expensive. You can save money by raising or catching them yourself. And I bought all the books." Esther thought very simple.
"The advanced class of this course is more dangerous. If you insist on taking it, I hope you won't regret it." Professor Snape gave Esther the scheduled class and ignored her.
"Thank you, Professor." Esther ignored Snape's dissatisfaction, took the schedule and left the auditorium happily.
Their first class was Defense Against the Dark Arts.Esther and Orion met Leona waiting at the door.
"I hope to meet a reliable professor this year. It seems that we have been self-study since the first grade?" Leona complained.
"Come in." Professor Lupine opened the classroom door and let everyone in.
"I'm very happy to see that so many people have entered the improvement class. After entering the improvement class, you will not only continue to learn how to fight against dark creatures, but also learn how to resist evil spells and how to break them." Lupine paused, then continued: "But as a basis, what we are going to learn in this class is the silent spell. Can someone explain, what is a silent spell?" Seeing that no one raised their hands, Lupine took the initiative to call the names, "Miss Collins? Can you tell me about it?" ?”
"Okay, professor. The silent spell is not a single spell, but it means that you don't make a sound when you use the spell. The advantage is that others don't know what magic you are going to use, so you will have the advantage and surprise you. The disadvantage is that it weakens the magic effect , the attack or defense effect is not as strong as the spell read out." Esther replied.
"The answer is very comprehensive, Slytheringa is very good." Professor Lupine said with a smile. "To cast a silent spell, you need a lot of concentration and willpower. You have to clearly think of the spell you are going to cast in your mind." , and then believe that you can succeed.”
Professor Lupine brought out a wooden dummy and placed it in the middle of the classroom. "Now line up in a line. Everyone thinks of an attack spell that they are best at. Try to choose a simple spell."
He said to Leona, who was standing first, "Miss Brown, what spell are you thinking of?"
"Leg-locking spell, Professor," replied Leona.
"Very well, now focus your mind on the spell you just did, and cast it on the dummy," Lupine encouraged her, standing beside her.
Leona stared straight at the dummy, kept her mouth shut, and waved her wand, but nothing happened. She put down her wand a little discouraged.
"It's okay, it's okay. Of course this will happen on the first try. You did a good job, but you need to be more focused on reciting the mantra in your mind, and you must think clearly and accurately about the mantra. Just like vocalizing a mantra, a little mistake will lead to Deviations and failures. Come on, the next classmate will come and try."
After a round of practice, many people secretly chanted spells in a low voice in order to succeed, and Professor Lupine discovered them all.Instead of getting mad, he gently points out their cheating, giving them a little confidence in themselves.
Finally, in the second round of practice, Leona successfully released a silent leg-lock spell, and Professor Lupine added ten points to Gryffindor.Several others have since successfully used the silent spell, including Esther.
Professor Lu Ping asked successful students to use silent defensive spells and temporarily unsuccessful students to use offensive spells to practice each other. After class, everyone gained a lot. Even the students who didn't succeed felt that they could do it with a little more effort.
