Chapter 5 The Chapel in the Spider's End
After Mo selflessly contributed her little pet to the incoming Potions Master's research, Snape got on fairly well with his little guest.
From entering a fighting state as soon as they meet to ignoring each other, it can be regarded as a staged progress.Although one of them seems to have never been questioned consciousness.
After Snape entered the room, he would not come out for a whole day. Mo ignored the screams and struggles of his pet in his palm, and started to explore this different world with great interest.
Although in the 26 days of deep sleep, she has clearly known every trace of the world, but knowing is different from seeing, and Mo still has a childlike curiosity about this brand new world.
Mo walked out the door of Snape's house.
In the early morning, the Spider's End Alley was gray and deserted. There was no one in the alley, and the fog filled the air. Mo tiptoed over the sundries on the road and walked slowly through the dirty and chaotic alley.
When the sun's rays pierced the white mist, a deep bell sounded from afar, and it struck six times without haste. It was the church bell.
When you get closer, you can hear the faint sound of reciting.
Mo bent his lips and quickly found the place where the voice came from.
This is a small church with mottled gray walls. There are no colorful patterned glass windows or floor-to-ceiling curtains in the rough window sills. There are even some broken wine bottles left on the window sills. It is said to be a church, but it is actually more like a dilapidated hut. If it weren't for the conspicuous cross on the roof, perhaps no one would know that there is a small church hidden in this chaotic alley.
There was only one old priest in the chapel, and the voice reading the Bible was his.He was dressed plainly, but looked very neat, with clumsy presbyopic glasses on the bridge of his nose, his hand holding the book trembled, but his expression looked energetic.
Mo sat on the roof opposite the church, looking at the little church with empty eyes.
She saw the old pastor reading the Bible devoutly, and saw him cleaning the two rows of tables and chairs in the church with difficulty but persistently. A drunk man who had just come out of the bar swayed and collapsed in the corner of the box. He poured a glass of water into the sipped glass and placed it in front of him.
From sunrise to sunset, the whole day, no one came to the chapel. In the alley ten meters away from the church, children in shabby clothes chased and ran, and the passing women were wrapped in thick cloaks. Here, I didn't even lift my head, as if no one had noticed, there was still a church here.
However, the old pastor still carried out every step in an orderly manner, reciting, praying, reading...
It's just such slow and strenuous movements, but it seems to make this place different. This old pastor seems to have separated this church from the chaos and filth of Spider's End Lane, giving this place a power that makes people feel calm from the bottom of their hearts.
Mo dangled his unshod feet in the air, tilting his head to watch all this.
She thought of the dark and chaotic alley outside the No. [-] Middle School. If there was such a place there, with such a missionary, would it feel as peaceful as here?
Mo only thought for a while, and then put this unanswered question behind him.
When night was about to fall, the old pastor turned on the only light in the church. Under the dim light, he knelt before God and prayed silently.
"If you know what time it is, you shouldn't be sitting in a place like this."
The black-haired man said in his usual harsh and mean tone.
"Come down for me, immediately."
Mo looked down at him and said, “It’s very comfortable to sit here.”
Snape, who was originally impatient, immediately turned gloomy, "Don't you understand what I said? I'll tell you to come down, immediately, immediately!"
The people in the church seemed to be disturbed by the noise at the entrance of the alley. The old pastor stood up and saw the tall but skinny black-haired youth at the entrance of the alley.
And the clothes on him that are very weird for ordinary people.
Snape cursed a few words in a low voice, but it was too late to cast the Disillusionment Charm. He held his wand, ready to give this untimely witness a complete oblivion at any time.
But before he could make up his mind, the old pastor called out his name.
"Are you Severus? Long time no see."
Snape looked as ugly as if he had eaten a fly.He reluctantly resisted the urge to turn around and leave to greet the old man.
"Mr. Moulder, I didn't expect you to recognize me."
"Of course, I still remember that when Irene brought you to the church, you were only this tall." The old pastor stretched out his hand for comparison, his eyes were cloudy, but his eyes were very clear. "You haven't been here since Irene died, I'm sorry, Severus."
"I'm sorry too..." Snape's eyes showed the emptiness unique to Occlumency, but the twitching muscles on his face and the stiff tone still revealed something soft and fragile in this man's heart.
He realizes this right away and decides to stop this meaningless conversation.
"I have to go, Mr. Mold." Snape nodded at him, and glanced at Mo, who was still dangling his feet on the roof, "Mo, don't expect me to save you dinner."
Mo jumped off the roof and landed on Snape's shoulder, "I forgot to eat lunch and I'm a bit hungry now, Mr. Snape."
"Are your legs just for show, Miss Mo? Come down and walk!" Snape's words hissed with anger sounded a little scary, "Besides, I'm just a poor wretch who was forced to be in your adoption papers." The person who signed it is not your nanny, don't think that I will appear in front of you with lunch."
"Well, I know you didn't have lunch either." Mo patted Snape's shoulder understandingly.
Snape's face was contorted, "I'm assuming you're not a little troll who can't understand human speech, so don't misinterpret other people's meaning."
"Also, as I said, get off me!..."
The old pastor watched the strange pair disappear into the alley. He stretched out his hand and made a sign of the cross on his body. He raised his head with a gentle and tolerant smile on his face.
"God bless you, Severus."
Dinner was very simple steak rice. Although Snape, who lived alone for a long time, was not good at cooking, he was still passable.
Mo poked out pieces of green peppers on the plate, and some undercooked beef was treated the same way.
Snape said grimly, "Don't let me see what I've made go to waste if you don't want to fix it yourself every meal."
Mo seriously assured, "It won't be wasted." While continuing to pick out the things on the plate.
"Xiao Hei." Mo called softly, and Xiao Hei jumped onto the dining table with a meow.
Snape's face really darkened.
The next day, Mo came to that church again and sat down in the same position.
It was Sunday, and the silent chapel finally welcomed its first visitor.
It was a young woman, with a tall and thin body wrapped under a gray cloak, her brown hair rolled up, revealing a long neck.
She seemed to be very emotional, and after barely maintaining her composure for a moment, she couldn't help crying under the kind and tolerant eyes of the old pastor.Tears kept flowing from her fingers, and the suppressed cries were mixed with chaotic and broken narratives.
"I knew... Lily was only 21 years old... the people who come out of that place are not good... that little monster... Vernon disagrees... but he is... Mr. Mold, what am I going to do ..."
The old pastor comforted her in a low voice, and his gentleness and tolerance finally calmed her down.
She quickly wiped away her tears and prayed with the old pastor. Two hours later, she left here in a hurry, and it was not yet nine o'clock, and there was no one in Spider's End Alley. She had obviously chosen her time deliberately so that no one would know that she had been here.
Mo looked at the back of her leaving, there was nothing in his empty eyes.
"Son, would you like to come in and sit for a while?"
Mo looked down and saw the old priest looking at her with blue eyes and smiling.
