Chapter 15 Five Times Snape Didn't Get What He Wanted

1.

At the end of Snape's first year officially teaching at Hogwarts, the former Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher suddenly fell ill and couldn't come out of St. Mungo's for the next four months.Snape received the task temporarily, took the class for the last two weeks, and designed five more sets of exam questions (fortunately, he didn't have to worry about the fifth and seventh grade exams).

He stayed up all night for these, not because it was so difficult, but because he intentionally completed this task beautifully. He knew the reputation of Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Dumbledore would rather look at the options at hand than try to convince someone to take the risk.

Given his own history, Snape hadn't expected to succeed the first time around, so he wasn't disappointed to see an unfamiliar face appear in the often-changing seat after the summer holidays.Just asking himself, Snape admitted that Dumbledore's choice might also have something to do with the low pass rate in the end-of-year exams - it was a mistake to overestimate the students' ability to break spells.

But he also believed that once he took over as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, this sad situation of overall incompetence would be greatly improved.

2.

After several years of teaching, Snape began to believe that the so-called curse of office was probably not just a sensational schoolyard tale, even in the wizarding world, there was always a reason for the same thing to happen one after another. One might argue that it was a coincidence that five consecutive Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers fell seriously ill, died, or got lost in the heart of the Sahara Desert between April and August, but this did not convince Snape.

And if the part about the curse is true, it means that there is a certain chance that the person who cast the curse is still alive. It is true that there are many types of curses that only require a fixed moment of thought, and their duration does not require the survival of the caster as a condition, but the object of that type of curse is usually a specific object, not a person who can be changed at any time, and the name can be changed at any time position. The profound magic behind this is far beyond ordinary people's imagination.Dumbledore has not canceled or merged this class for so many years, which is also evidence. Changing the existing conditions rashly may make the scope of the curse out of control.

If there is such a possibility, he has guessed right in every link...

Snape made a formal application, long and earnest, more of an attempt to use Dumbledore's guilt to validate his ideas after being rejected. He would never have thought that Dumbledore was gullible, but if there was anything he knew about the headmaster, it was that the man was always vulnerable to sincerity (no matter how stupid, superfluous sincerity) and would make you feel pitiful. Efforts are also counted in sincerity.

3.

Snape was indeed hopeful about the application - Lily's son was about to enroll, and perhaps Dumbledore would feel it was time to show some more trust.Even if the Headmaster still didn't believe that he was far from the old ways, at least the other party should know that he would not do anything to endanger the safety of Harry Potter.

So when he received Dumbledore's tactful but intransigent rejection, he was quite angry.

4.

Even the students knew which subject he wanted to teach, and Dumbledore was pretending to be deaf and dumb.Snape had no doubt that he had long been a joke of some sort—Head of Slytherin, long-term companion of the Defense Against the Dark Arts professorship, haha.

But this time it was really too much, almost humiliating: even without considering the Dark Lord himself attached to the back of his head, Quirrell's talent is not outstanding, and Lockhart is a complete idiot. Hiring these two people has proved that Dumbledore Much has no choice.Snape lowered his requirements, only applying for a one-year term, and suggested several alternative Potions teachers - the result was the same as before.

No, Dumbledore would not have been so angry if he had announced that Gilderoy Lockhart would succeed him for a year.

"You want that werewolf to enter Hogwarts again?"

"Remus has never intentionally hurt anyone, on the contrary, he has always tried to avoid such things."

"He doesn't need to be 'intentional', he's a threat." Snape sneered, "But I guess you've figured out how to prevent him from biting your precious student this time?"

"On the contrary," Dumbledore replied mildly. "Your great assistance is needed in this matter, Severus."

Snape almost replied fuck you.

Next, of course, he went to buy all the materials needed to brew Wolfsbane potion. He could pour out all the bad things and whining he could every time he saw Dumbledore, but the headmaster always got his way anyway.

5.

Snape didn't write the application, but Dumbledore took the initiative to poke his scar, so he felt that the old man was not a decent person.

"It's as if I can compete with the senior investigator of the Ministry of Magic." He sneered, "How do you feel about losing the right to appoint and dismiss teachers?"

"Strictly speaking, Hogwarts still has the power to appoint its own teachers," Dumbledore replied.

Then you have the ability to remove the senior investigator?Snape rolled his eyes secretly, it was not impossible to keep Umbridge out, but there was no need to further push the Ministry of Magic to the opposite side for this right now.Besides, thanks to Fudge, he and Potter were notorious at the moment, and the headmaster probably didn't have much energy left to find another teacher who was capable enough and trusted him.

"It's not that I don't trust you, Severus."

Snape didn't think it was a lie. On the premise of doing everything possible to prevent him from being exposed to black magic, on the premise of always alerting him with suspicion, and on the premise of making sure that he remembered his guilt towards Lily, Dumbledore trusted him. With the premise, Dumbledore trusts everyone.

"Of course." He replied coldly, because it would be useless to talk too much.

"After he returns, your position is very important to us." Dumbledore added, "The situation is serious, and the Order of the Phoenix cannot afford to lose you."

"Say that word all you want, Dumbledore. I won't be scared out of the Headmaster's office."

Realizing that Dumbledore was avoiding using the name Dark Lord against him, Snape wasn't sure whether to be amused or offended. He was nervous about that word, perhaps more so than the average wizard, but if Dumbledore felt it, what a name could do to Snape would be underestimating him.

"I know." The principal looked at him. "You are much braver than that."

[So far, you are much braver than Igor Karkaroff. You know, I sometimes feel that our classification is too hasty...]

It was the second time since the Dark Mark had burned again that Dumbledore had appreciated his bravery, even though Snape had done the same thing as he had done 14 years earlier. He tried to take it as a reminder and nothing else.

.

"What kind of compensation is this?"

Dumbledore handed Fawkes the last morsel of bone and turned to him calmly, not looking at the letter of appointment thrown on the desk. This was Snape's last chance to take up the position of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and they knew that in a year's time his position would be that of Headmaster of Hogwarts and the number one contributor to killing Dumbledore.Throughout the summer, Snape didn't think about his position, he was always worrying about Dumbledore's remaining life, Draco's new mission, the anger of the Dark Lord, the hostility of other Death Eaters, the Unbreakable Vow, etc. A series of shitty things that cost him his life.It looked like he had a good chance of being freed before Dumbledore.

Then one day in August, Snape came into the office, thinking about Dumbledore's new prescription - and found that damned commission sitting neatly on his desk.

"Horace has agreed to return to the school as Potions teacher."

"I don't need it." He met those blue eyes angrily. "You think giving me the job I want will make me work harder at killing you and picking up your mess—" He paused For a moment, it seemed that the other party interrupted him, but Dumbledore didn't say, "—because you can't look at me anymore, you have to make a gesture of trusting me."

The current headmaster was about to be one of the portraits of previous headmasters on the wall who whispered accusations of his rudeness.

"I never doubted you, Severus, nor did I intend to burden you with this position," Dumbledore replied. "I'm sorry you think so."

"Really?" Snape asked, "Then what should I think? After ten years of rejection, you finally found that I was the most suitable candidate?"

"You can take it as a parting gift, Severus," the Headmaster suggested gently.

Dumbledore sat down, fingertips facing each other, just as usual. It was as if one of his hands had always been charred black, and Snape was just whining again about his refusal or another of Potter's follies. An ordinary Sunday, one of a million little things they were about to lose.

"It's always what you want, Dumbledore." Snape put the commission letter back into his arms, making himself sound resentful, "Everything is as you expected, doesn't it feel particularly good?"

"I want to know, too," Dumbledore replied.

He didn't ask Dumbledore what that meant.
